Record numbers of otaku appear to have been enjoying a romantic Christmas eve together with their 2D paramours, often enjoying a festive pizza and cake – what passes for a Christmas dinner in Japan, as unconcerned with how barbarians celebrate the year’s premier shopping event as ever.
Why is any of this 'creepy' to anyone? Anybody realize that these fans are mostly probably doing this semi ironically? How else are fans supposed to celebrate? With a pagan ritual?
People are supposed to celebrate the normal way: interacting with other people. The fact that they chose to spend it with their stupid 2D "waifus" is just downright pathetic.
o_m_G someone should make a movie about these people! I haven't seen anything as romantic lately, this just proves that otakus have big hearts and they are _not_ lonely. Their companions are just not here.. yet.
I don't see much wrong with this. If you have no girl and living far from your family, you are tend to be alone. You would buy food anyway whats wrong taking a funny picture and share it on the net. They at least see other similar fated people so they can cherish the fact they are not alone. I feel that in our world we are exaggerating the importance of being with someone at Christmas or new years eve and force to be happy when we are actually not.
WTH? A person who has 3 lcd's in his room displaying graphic of a character, CHARACTER, does not exaggerate the weight of being with someone during christmas?
I cannot comprehend what isn't right with this. Although I agree that's it's up to oneself to decide how he want's to spend his time, I can't see it any different than using 2d as a substitute for the bonds between two people, for all the possible relationships that were abandoned due to fear, disappointment or simply accidental issues. Someone who spends this time alone but has someone close to him might say that the christmas sucked, especially in Japan, where boy-girl event's are placed above spending time with family. He may watch tv, anime, read manga or whatever, but he also often gains motivation to do better in bonding, because he understands that to be alone means it sucks.
Creepy Otaku, though, will kick your ass if you dare imply that something isn't right with their habits. Their denial is so strong it's almost lost case. There are of course also those who might admit that it's only a substitution, but they'd prefer to be with real girl during this time. They always have a chance.
And why is it a lost case? Their ultimate goal is self-fulfillment. It is not possible to feel completely satisfied in life unless you put some of the expectations on someone else: in most cases it is your children, your partner. You know your own limits of what makes you satisfied, thus, when you place expectations only in what You do and what You achieve, your goal might be met pretty quickly (getting all figures from anime? buying all doujins? whatever) and it lasts till your death. If you know your goals will soon hit the limit bar, you're near your mental or literal death. However, when you have expectations in someone else (your girl, boy, children, your cat, pupil, patient, believer, even the society itself) you share their goals. You also share goals of their children. And their children. Your life still has sense till your death after decades of living. That's what made most of families roll during the time when there was neither Internet nor games or anime.
You are right bonding is important. Also the fact that one must face reality, but I believe that even the most hardcore of otaku would not throw away a love or friendship with real people for an imaginable character, despite what they say.
The fact that they shared these pictures on message boards shows that they communicate with other people , or at least try to.
Even if some feel down the way out of misery is to be cheerful.
Who cares?
".....substitute for the bonds between two people, for all the possible relationships that were abandoned due to fear, disappointment or simply accidental issues."
what if you don't have a certain person that you want to "bond" with?
like if you wanted friends that were big time anime fans but no one around you is?
or you just don't like the people around you?
if you think that people "really" need companionship of any kind just so that they won't be alone then that's just weak.
there's technology now and entertainment, this isn't like back then where you'd be bored to death.
Bad enough they're lonely and creepy, they gotta be fucking stupid, too? All that food (nice and "splashy" types in a few cases, too) and open liquid containers, around nice delicate electronics? Wow guys, way to show your knowledge of "do's" and "don'ts"... *facepalm*
Right, because not like JDSF actually has recruitment posters with this anime plastered all over Akiba with big bold fonts "JOIN US!" or anything.... More

what if you don't have anybody that you actually want to interact with?
