tiger-and-bunny-by-ichitaka.jpg

Anime fans have been lamenting the wastefulness of anime which the mainstream might accept being broadcast at 3AM instead of at “golden time” in the early evening – and with their number one choice, they may have a point…

The ranking:

1. Tiger & Bunny

2. Chihayafuru

3. Working!!

4. Nichijou

5. K-ON!

6. Ika Musume

7. Natsume’s Book of Friends

8. Ano Hi

9. Croisée in a Foreign Labyrinth

10. Puella Magi Madoka Magica

11. Tamayura -hitotose-

12. Clannad

13. Usagi Drop

14. Hanasaku Iroha

15. Hidamari Sketch

16. Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei

17. Spice & Wolf

18. Honey and Clover

19. Kaichou wa Maid-sama

20. A Certain Magical Index

21. Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha

22. Toradora!

23. The IdolMaster

24. Last Exile: Fam, The Silver Wing

25. Aria The Animation

Although it seems Tiger & Bunny could plausibly have done better in an evening slot, whether even early airing could have saved Nichijou looks doubtful…

    Completely agree about T&B.

    And seriously? Chihayafuru's a shoujo anime, I'm surprised it's actually late-night.

Madoka being late night was about right or at least 10 or 11 PM. Everything else was better off evening.

Yea, I agree. I'm surprised that Nichijou was aired late night cause well, when I watched it, I laughed too loudly that a few people came knocking on my door telling me to zip it up. I wonder how they can watch Nichijou while not laughing too loudly...

Yea. That was a red flag that it's NOT an anime for the young girls who usually like Mahou Shoujo anime. I'm glad they didn't put air it any earlier.

In an ideal world, most of those shows should be airing in afternoons and evenings. I can only name 3 or 4 truly disturbing shows that children really shouldn't watch out of many I've seen. And no, Madoka isn't really one of them. I guess it comes close though.

    I HATE variety shows...

Madoka past episode 3 was not as bad as it seems. Madoka is a show that shows the benefits and consequences of being a Magical Shoujo that is all.

I think girls would be sick to death of the same magical shoujo defeating the same baddie the upteenth time.

In my opinion the only reason to broadcast late at night is for any series based on lots of ero, yuri, yaoi, or nudity more extreme then your standard umi/onsen episodes.

Well, there are also popular animes that are orientated for an adult audience (I'm not referring to ero, or gore, just that it's the type that kids dun watch because of the plot) that have to be aired late since most adults work during daytime.

Clannad was broadcast late at night??

    Seriously??

What the hell were they thinking??

It's the BEST anime series ever!!

    there's a different reason.
the prime time slot has to be filled shows that are sure-fire appealing to the largest group of viewers available around those times.

that group are middle and high students who come home around 6 to 7pm, any adult who has a job will not be home :D

putting a seinen audience show in the prime slot would only make the most fitting age group unable to watch it.

also, most late night shows are having short runs (12-13 episodes), while many prime time shows have the material to run for at least 2 full seasons (52 epsiodes).

Actually, that's not what decides what animes go on primetime.
    It's who pays the most.

Do you actually know what anime shows air at prime time (or as the Japanese call it: Golden Time, starting 19:00, ending 22:00) on the major channels here in Japan? It's pretty much all aimed at younger viewers. Many channels don't even have anime featuring in those slots in first place.

Keroro Gunsou, Mainichi Kaasan, Uchi no Sanshimai, Pokemon B&W, Yuugiou Zexal, Mari&Gali ... just to name a few.

Can't say that I disagree with the list. Though from the looks of it, anything deemed for a more 'mature' audience, be it tastes, themes or content gets instantly relegated to the late-night time slot.

T&B at 3am ? Pepsi should retreat their contracts with Blue Rose cause there is no gain in airing Softdrink commercials at this hour.

Madoka should imho aired at 4 or 5am with "Morning Rescue" ^^

Agreed with most of this list. I think quality anime like some of the ones on this list should have the chance to be seen and expand the potential demographic, leave the borderline hentai for late night and get more people interested in Japan's most unique entertainment product. The dramas and variety shows that are often on late night there are pretty much the same as the ones I see on Spanish tv, and just as terrible.

considering how everything is censored to high heaven nowadays, it really makes no difference whether an anime gets broadcast late at night or on prime time

young adult males primarily, people who come home late (9pm and later) on work days and therefore never able to watch a prime time broadcast. between 0 and 3am isn't really sleeping time for that age group.

Except Madoka, everything else seems safe for evenings. Karuta might gain more popularity with Chihayafuru aired in the evenings, which I think is a great show this season.

These kinds of shows don't have enough appeal to get a prime timeslot. Its generally just kids stuff like Precure and shonen stuff like the Big 3 that get enough ratings to be worth a timeslot during the day. Theres occasionally a breakout hit that gets the 2nd season during Prime time (Code Geass R2), but thats only for the biggest hits. And even then, Code Geass couldn't touch the Big 3 and Precure in ratings.
