Japanese have been marvelling at the quality of the latest tanbo (rice field) art, with designs more intricate and complex than ever.
Tanbo art boasts an ancient history dating all the way back to 1993, when Touhoku farmers discovered the secret of planting different strains of rice so as to use their fields as gigantic canvases.
Typical themes for tanbo art are scenes from traditional Japanese art, but everything from advertising to cartoon characters also feature, and recent fields have seen a surge in “ganbarou” messages of post-quake encouragement.

No Miku, yet there is a fucking Micky Mouse! this is sacrilage!
Japanese have no pride!
Or perhaps the farmers have more pride because they don't succumb to this generation's pop culture?
Even without miku, on a scale from 1 to 10, those are Badass!
or as I like to say:
OMG LOL WTF EPIC
Imagine eating leek from Miku tanbo art....
They could make a lot of money from that XD
Japanese did enjoy watching Disney movies.
and copyright infringement apparently!
miku is too complex, get over it.
Most Miku fans are Hikikomori, and therefore don't work at farms, so they have no influence over the designs.
Mickey mouse inspired Tezuka's large-eyed character designs, so it has some ground to stand on.
It will be perfect for Miku. The grass is green after all.
That is rice genius.
You'd be surprised. Mickey mouse is more openly accepted as popular than Miku in Japan. Adult men and women alike can wear clothes with mickey prints without being secluded... in fact I have a mickey polo and it looks fkin awesome lol.
No love for deadmau5? :(
Yeah man I love deadmau5
but is this the same mouse that we talking about... just asking..
I have a hard time to believe that it's rice who can do this.
The aliens did it!
Nah... It was Haruhi...
Aliens.jpg
Obviously. The last time they kidnapped me, we marathoned Madoka together. Aliens are huge weaboos.
028: I wa SHOCK!
That 'I <3 Panasonic' one cracked me up. But other than the sad, sad lack of Anime characters, I feel that most of the art is pretty brilliant with some awesome perspectives. Must have taken some planning to accomplish.
You bet, although nowadays there is software that can do a reverse perspective transformation. But you still need to get from a drawing on paper to the actual field. In any case, I love the final effect.
Just amazing! Boring old crops just got epic
Mickey! <3
No Pedobear ?
Wish they would do this where I live. It would really be a tourist attraction.
These farmers have way too much spare time.
Hm. These are awesome, but I was expecting your next post to be about Kim Jong-Il.
I came here to post the exact same thing, haha.
Better not, or else there's going to be another sudden Down(votes)pour hitting this site again.
How do you mean? Isn't everyone pretty much in agreement about the state of north korea?
Yes. We shall all miss our Glorious Leader. Rest In Peace.
How do they create such variety in colours?
How do they create such variety in colours?
where are touhou?
I hope I don't get voted down for such a simple question, but. . .how do they do this? I'm curious.
My best guess is they picked a number of specific types of rice seed, each with their own variated colour for each species, and then plant them all according to a coordinated plan...
Awesome indeed. Though harvesting the particular field is troublesome, like the last pic indicates, to avoid mixing cultivars. A nice way to liven up the countryside in any case.
Hey, it gives them something to do.
Must be made by UFOs, right?
This is the spirit!
you sure it's not photoshop?
No 30 says "I love Panasonic"
strange xD
I wonder if they were inspired by corn mazes in the west.
Still the end result kinda reminds me of how CGA images looked on old PCs which had only 4 colors at a time to work with in graphics mode.
The west just does crop circles.
Rice planting level: Asian
I wonder if they make one big enough, it could be seen from space...
I have the feeling that many of these are fake...I hope they're real, though.
I wanted to see some Hokuto Shinken.
