Japanese have been marvelling at the quality of the latest tanbo (rice field) art, with designs more intricate and complex than ever.
Tanbo art boasts an ancient history dating all the way back to 1993, when Touhoku farmers discovered the secret of planting different strains of rice so as to use their fields as gigantic canvases.
Typical themes for tanbo art are scenes from traditional Japanese art, but everything from advertising to cartoon characters also feature, and recent fields have seen a surge in “ganbarou” messages of post-quake encouragement.

028: I wa SHOCK!
Nah... It was Haruhi...
No Miku, yet there is a fucking Micky Mouse! this is sacrilage!
Japanese have no pride!
Even without miku, on a scale from 1 to 10, those are Badass!
Imagine eating leek from Miku tanbo art....
They could make a lot of money from that XD
or as I like to say:
OMG LOL WTF EPIC
It will be perfect for Miku. The grass is green after all.
That is rice genius.
Mickey mouse inspired Tezuka's large-eyed character designs, so it has some ground to stand on.
You'd be surprised. Mickey mouse is more openly accepted as popular than Miku in Japan. Adult men and women alike can wear clothes with mickey prints without being secluded... in fact I have a mickey polo and it looks fkin awesome lol.
No love for deadmau5? :(
Yeah man I love deadmau5
but is this the same mouse that we talking about... just asking..
Japanese did enjoy watching Disney movies.
and copyright infringement apparently!
Or perhaps the farmers have more pride because they don't succumb to this generation's pop culture?
Most Miku fans are Hikikomori, and therefore don't work at farms, so they have no influence over the designs.
miku is too complex, get over it.
Must be made by UFOs, right?
That 'I <3 Panasonic' one cracked me up. But other than the sad, sad lack of Anime characters, I feel that most of the art is pretty brilliant with some awesome perspectives. Must have taken some planning to accomplish.
You bet, although nowadays there is software that can do a reverse perspective transformation. But you still need to get from a drawing on paper to the actual field. In any case, I love the final effect.
I hope I don't get voted down for such a simple question, but. . .how do they do this? I'm curious.
My best guess is they picked a number of specific types of rice seed, each with their own variated colour for each species, and then plant them all according to a coordinated plan...
I am kinda disappointed that no one caught this Tanbo art boasts an ancient history dating all the way back to 1993 if that's ancient I would hate to think what they would think of me being 44 years old lol
pimp my riCe !
Hm. These are awesome, but I was expecting your next post to be about Kim Jong-Il.
Better not, or else there's going to be another sudden Down(votes)pour hitting this site again.
How do you mean? Isn't everyone pretty much in agreement about the state of north korea?
Yes. We shall all miss our Glorious Leader. Rest In Peace.
I came here to post the exact same thing, haha.
No Pedobear ?
No 30 says "I love Panasonic"
strange xD
I wonder if they were inspired by corn mazes in the west.
Still the end result kinda reminds me of how CGA images looked on old PCs which had only 4 colors at a time to work with in graphics mode.
Just one word: Incredible.
Last picture: People cannibalizing the fields.
yea seriously, Japan will need some self boosting after South Korea makes sex slave statues with the money they got from Japan
Japanese > Aliens

At least they don't try to claim a ufo did it like those morons in USA/ England
Fucking rice, how does it work?!
With magnets.
Rice is Art.
i was like "holy shit thats amazing"
but then i was like "PHOTOSHOP, Y U SO MEAN ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)"
man thats actually increidble, I seriously thought it was photoshoped still think some are but if it all isnt thats some amazing artwork and must take ages to do!
aliens would be proud
oh come on now, a lot of these are obvious fakes.
many of them are the same field over and over with different images in the crops. how many are we supposed to believe they have made since the quake? unless they are spraying the plants with dye that washes off, there's no way.
several are even the same photo. EXACT same photo, cut up and given different images in the rice. uh, wow, your photoshop is impressive anyway.
congrast to the real ones, absolutely inspirational!
congrats, even.
If only we could moe-ify it...nuhuhuhu
anyway awesome scenery
