An 8-year-old girl has won the Japan’s junior Gundam World Cup and will be representing her country at the world finals, creating quite a stir with her diorama of a mobile suit blasting and smashing various tanks.
8-year-old Mei Hata, a 2nd year Hokkaido elementary school student, won 1st place in Japan’s junior round of the “Gunpla Builders World Cup 2011” with her diorama “The Battle with Zaku,” showing a mech blasting a tank with a rocket launcher whilst crushing another underfoot.
Judges praised the little girl’s work as “making you feel a real sense of story” and “a diorama with real intensity.”
She was interviewed about her victory:
Tell us how you felt about your win.
I was delighted. I was really surprised when I won. My mother cried with joy.
Were you confident of winning?
Not really. I didn’t think I could beat “Nightmare Hygogg.”
What was difficult about the diorama?
The Wappa [the flying vehicle]. I want people to see that the most.
How long did it take?
About two weeks. I did it as ‘free study’ in the summer holidays. I showed it at school and everyone was surprised.
Do you like Gundam?
I like it. I like Gundam Unicorn and Banagher Links.
When did you start making them?
Spring break of my second year. In March I saw my father making dioramas and I wanted to try myself.
I heard your father took part too?
He didn’t get pass the first round…
This is the first year the “World Cup” is being held, and on the 25th the world final round is set to be held in Hong Kong, with contestants from 12 countries vying for the title of “world’s best builder.”
Mei is set to represent Japan in the junior course for under-14s, and is apparently enthusiastic about competing for this great if rather new honour.
Some of the winners displayed at the event so far:

Thailand’s event was cancelled due to excessive amounts of water.
There are mixed opinion’s about Mei’s victory:
“Did she really make that?”
“Her father must have done it?”
“Her favourite character is Banagher Links from Gundam Unicorn. She’s more mature than the average fujoshi…”
“An 8-year-old who like Unicorn, she’s a real maniac alright.”
“Her father probably did all the work for her…”
“At 8 she probably only put it together, I bet her father did all the painting.”
“‘Her mother was in tears when she won’ – doubtless because she gave birth to such a daughter…”
“What a great age we live in for this to be accepted as a school project.”
“If that interview is really how she responded she sounds like a very mature little girl.”
“It could win against the other Japanese entrants I think.”
“She could get far in the open course.”
“Her father surely did it all.”
“An 8-year-old could make that. Just how bad are all your Gundams, guys?”
“You lot are underestimating our 8-year-olds.”
“Her father’s site confirms that she did all the work. Her father is a journalist and actually interviewed her himself as well… her room is full of Gundam and you can see her holding her father’s failed entry:”
“No wonder he lost…”
“This is all the proof you need that her father had nothing to do with her entry:”

Got to love all those Gundams.
IT'S A GUNDAM!!!
I used to be good at building gundams like her...then I took an arrow in the knee.
in other words you are invalid now?
wa that harsh :))
Let me guess... someone stole your gundam?
No, he's obviously a guard now.
Why you no get better knee armor? :o
I used to treasure 8-year old girls, then I took an arrow in the junk.
It's a Skyrim reference...
Let me guess... Someone stole your Zaku?
My Cousin is out there fighting Gundams and what do I get? Territorial Patrol
"I can handle the occasional Zaku or Dom. I don't know about Gundams."
ILL TAKE THAT LOLI K THX
impossibru! she cant make something like that!
Japan's first place winner, Negai, looks gay as hell, probably built by a fujoshi. It looks like something out of a private RO server with its wings and valk helmet.
Genius and talented I should say, though I feel bad for other contestants... beaten by a "8-year-old-girl" lol
the category was Junior, so the other contestants were kids and teens as well
Ah, that makes a lot o sense.
Wahh sankaku pervs, don't think anything while watching this girl...
Yeah dont think. FEEL!!
Why don't you just shut up...and die while you ar at it, you degenerate waste of DNA.
You die you sick bastard why are you thinking about the feelings in some digusting way? FEEL proud of her achievement not touching the kid.
I have to agree with some of the compliments from 2chan. her parents more than likely did most of the work.
Jealous.
And you have never-ever visited cool-mini or not I see. This stuff really is childs-play.
The Korean Open winner is probably the most boring of all.
she's a NEWTYPE!!
I... I lost !!
Woah, the China Open and Italy Open winners are exceptionally stylish, especially compared to some of the rest, such as the Korea Open and Singapore Open winners...
i bet they won't do justice to Italian diorama's greatness. but it's great still
China Open's entry = Jaw drop for me. Say what you will it looks EPIC.
What a gem. Its hard enough to find these type of girls to appreciate such hobbies, let alone share similar interest with you.
She'll make a great and understanding wife someday...
*sniff*
u're wrong Yoshii-kun
she'll make a great waifu NOW and i mean ONLY NOW while she still small
People do laugh with their eyes closed after all! not that i got big eyes myself
Not funny dude...
Well, guess the internet police will come for you one day ....like the wind. Hayate.
Kentou inorou.
Be sure to check under your bed and in the closet for Chris Hansen he's very very sneaky.
Some say he can teleport.
i bet her father is to blame
i have a friend who's daughter loves power metal. she heard it from the cradle.
my niece loves metal aswell (shes 6 years old)
She explained to me that she liked the " angry music" the best.
Its really funny to look at her when she listens to it. Slightly grinning while bobbing her head up and down.
This loli is made of win!
The reason her diorama is a winner I think is because like several of the other winners, it tells a story. This is what scale modelling dioramas DO. Unlike what some of these winners created - a single mobile suit in some sort of glorious homoerotic victory pose surrounded by its own weapons/masturbatory tools.
Hers and a few others show a real battle or even the mundane minutiae of combat- repairs, maintenance, applying camouflage. And that's what a DIORAMA is by definition, it's a representation of life.
And as such I hope the one from Malaysia wins, it really shows a lot going on with the few things it has.
This! While a lot of the other models were good, hers is one of the few that's actually INTERESTING.
I will admit, the Indonesian one is really cute, but...is that really a Gundam...?
That's just a Panda...
no its a pandarian!
It`s bearguy from Gunpla Builder series and bearguy is a jokes from acguy.
Yup, exactly. Also: rock on little girl!
As one who regularly engages in glorious homoerotic victory poses I take great offense to your comment.
I often pose naked in the mirror, crotch-thrusting like a sleek modern mobile suit after a battle, grasping a broom or guitar like it was a phallic beam weapon.
It makes me hot---for moar Gundam!!!
I agree... she did amazing work, even by adult standards.
I have but 1.5 issues with her diorama. The tank that is about to be blasted, there is a bolder behind it. It would have driven over it nor back up against it. I would have faced it in the same direction as the crushed tank.
Crushed tank, a gun barrel is bent, point of failure in the the turret would have been sufficient - and if possible, crush the suspension of the tank (Remove wheels, make the bottom flush with the thread).
I'd still give her 10 out of 10.
i didnt know that they had competitions for this silly shit. who can make a toy look good? what, unless they are casting the plastic, i am unimpressed
Stay out of architect or city design industry. In fact, stay out of cities. You don't have to grace the silly constructs of those designers with your presence.
