The general opinion of the collator appears to be that the current peak was reached some years ago with IdolMaster, although given that the graphical capabilities of the current generation of consoles are now hopelessly out of date, this is perhaps more a reflection of the glacial pace of console hardware evolution than that of the games themselves.

Not all of the improvement is technological; we've taken time to learn how to model an anime-ish head correctly. And there are some very simple tricks that work wonders (e.g. don't use flat shading, get your normals facing the right way, get your lighting right, use the backface culling with reverse normals trick to generate outlines) that are very doable even on quite old hardware (think 2000 or even earlier). The availability of graphical power is one thing, but programmers have to learn to use it effectively and that takes time.
I agree. Psychic Force is a good example:

This.
heeeey, what about schoolmate 2? isn't it better?
God used to say: "2D girl keep evolving but real girl won't"
I guess God failed advance genetics and evolution of the human species.... Can't blame him: I failed that too...
No Valkyria Chronicles? What the damned shit!?
Now that you say it... THIS LIST IS INCOMPLETE!
... Well, there's something you've heard on every list here :/
Still, it really should be up there, that game made me buy a PS3
Same, while MGS4 made me buy a PS3, it was a game like Valkyria Chronicles that made me burn 70+ hours into it, hell part II for the PSP alone is already clocked at 109 hours and i'm STILL going strong trying to level up the VC1 team to their former glory :D
And yes Peacewalker is at 60+ hours as well, two games that justified the big boss package PSP bundle :P
Come to think of it, the girls from MSG4 should have been here and they'd be right at the graphical top.
THE FORCE IS STRONG WITH THIS ONE..
Eternal Sonata isn't on there either.
finally and epically nice topic though they're missing a few...
One of the girls from Final Fantasy 13 should be at the end. Probably Sara since she'll be the newest protagonist.
Lightning is hotter than Sara. Vanile seems to be in more porn though.
Was thinking quality up up up then hit Idol-master then quality down down down then after a few back to quality up up up
Guess we have highs and lows

No posts on the purchase of Gust?
1993 Virtua Fighter, fap fap fap.
Mm-hmm, gotta get me a piece of that Pai.
Somewhere out there, my virtual wife is likely under construction! I'LL WAIT FOR YOU~! ^-^
Valkyrie Profile 2 where? That game is gorgeous!
This anon is not pleased.
Fatal Frame chronology where! If that game is used as example, the evolution of 3D would be clear!
This anon is equally not pleased.
Dreamy Theater graphics is still the best out of all the games shown here.
Default models in vanilla are way better aesthetic-wise (not talking about polygon count or texture quality).

PSP version running on PC with AA.
I have to agree with this.
I always considered 3D custom girl a major step down compared to other games.
You know Teatime games look pretty good in still images, but when actually playing them there are serious clipping issues, the interface is horrible, loading times are very long and STILL the hardware requirements are beyond good and evil.
What the fuck? What about Ayane from ninja gaiden Sigma 2? There's Kasumi from DoA 2 so an update would be nice.
They still look like cartoon characters to me. 3D>>>>2D
There are a lot of art books and online tutorials out there on how to create really nice looking anime-style 3D characters, it's just too bad that the best of them aren't translated -_-
I've been trying to construct 3D versions of my own anime characters to use in game mods, but I just can't get it to look "convincing". They end up looking like less-detailed versions of Idolm@ster.
2D is fun, but I still prefer 3D over 2D.
I have to agree that Idolmaster is a good choice for the climax of CG animations.
Project Diva's franchise have been generally very good aswell. Especially when the Vita comes out, it will boast ps3 graphics like dreamy theater.
Project Diva looks 'old' in the comparison to other games from the graphics thought.
kasutamu taimu taimu♪
huh, I was expecting to see some other things on the list here. inlcuding
Biko 3
Artificial Girl
Real Kanojo
and that one with the 3D augmented reality using the holographic cube
Evolution. I just got a 3DS. 3D waifus, here I cum!
yes. LovePlus for the 3DS is gonna be awesome!
They sure looks fapable after PS2 Era.
With newer mods and the latest tweaks, 3D Custom Girl can be on par with later game releases. Regardless of its dated feel, the large modding community as well as the active number of mods released almost daily could keep the game alive for years to come.
I'm amazed there isn't any images from Soul Calibur series XD
Miku my love!! we have come along way!! =D
epic!
ahahah thats too funny looking at tekken and virtua fighter!!
polygon love 2 and the MMDs out there are coming along nicely....
i can't believe crisis core isn't here... didn't it had better 3D graphics? wth...
Well it has always been proportional in polygon count and computing power.
Obviously the early ones like Tekken look funny and clunky but were probably revolutionary at that time time.
In fairness, Today's Tekken have some of the most beautiful game ladies around, although they're rendered in Realism style as opposed to 2D Anime/Manga styles other games do. ^
The only thing I got out of this:
Why does Japan get all the good games?
Glacial pace of technology are you fucking crazy? Do you remember the gap between 8 bit and the 16, then the 16 then the 32. They are making new systems before they tap out the power of the old one.
Anime style rendering is actually my current study as a hobby.
When I did my research on existing methods, I couldn't find any good techniques for lighting. Their all just pushing lighting models designed for realism through a clamping matrix or a lookup table that does the same thing as a clamping matrix.
Outlines are the oddball. One of the best ways to do it has gone ignored for a few years. Not surprising considering I stumbled upon it in a GPU Gems article on deferred shading (GPU Gems 3, Chapter 19, Section 19.5.2). Doesn't require heavy mesh processing to find geometric edges, nor does it require resolution dependent tweaks.
It's slow going to develop a good lighting equation that mimics the odd exaggeration of lighting anime art does. Closest I've come so far is running lighting in xyY with a different technique to create the x-chroma and y-chroma. Hair was simple enough, Kasima-Kay method for hair is perfect for anime style when you ignore their advice about using high resolution sub-surface detail textures.
I detect another Yayoifag.
"Uu-uu~! High Touch!"
Hnngg.
Atelier Totori, Project DIVA, Idolmaster, Timeleap frontwing - gosh I want to play english subbed versions so badly...
