An MMORPG company which accidentally deleted its MMORPG during server maintenance has announced it has no choice but to shut the game down.
Japanese game developer Sankando and game operator Hangame had to make what must be the worst announcement (at least of those not pertaining to FFXIV) in MMORPG history with regards to their “M2” title:
There is something we must inform our valued customers of.
On the 21st of October, 2011, at 20:00, we undertook emergency maintenance on the server due to a critical issue.
Service was to resume promptly, but work performed by Sankando could not restore the game’s data. It is tremendously regrettable, but unfortunately we have no choice but to end service.
Thank you all for enjoying M2 for so long! Our heartfelt apologies for it having turned out like this.
It is not clear how many players are affected, and the extent of the operator’s backup precautions is not known either. The game was based on item charges – some conditional refunds have been announced.
With billions of dollars of virtual “property” now lodged on game servers the world over, the prospect of server problems now seems to offer a novel form of financial chaos capable of bankrupting millions – not that this is much different to what happens daily on the markets.

nooo, not my virtual mmorpg lolis...T_T
What a wonderful looking world. Where everyone is forever loli, and bunnies look like green cotton balls...
...and to think it was all deleted with the click of a button. The virtual world is cruel!
Admin Oniisan ha hidoii!!! >_<''
Have they never heard of unerase?
CTRL+Z! CTRL+Z, god dammit!!
......Manager-san ain't gonna like this.
I wonder what it means by server data. Does it mean player data? If so, then they can just restart the game from scratch.
But if it's world data... they're screwed.
Too bad. Looks cute.
Or a backup maybe .
The end of the world.....
why do i have the feeling that thousands of japanese otaku who played this game killed themselves.
anon (10:29 11/11/2011), why do you use multies to try to upvote your lame posts?
Nope, you lose again. Keep trying =)
hey anon, i think you need to create more accounts. a lot of the comments your upvoting talk about lolis too you know.
lol, what a loser this kid is...
PS Ill give you a hint: Its a LOT of fun messing with you as an admin.
Now go scurry along and sign up for more hotmail accounts so you can create your "multies" XD
ooo Admin Oniisan wa honto ni hidoi!!!!! >_<
Yeh the anon @ (10:29 11/11/2011) is the same anon using the multis to downvote everyone so that his comment stays on top. A very sad basement dweller with no natural ego and too much time on its hands.
you're talking to yourself now. i just won the game XD
Yeh the anon @ (23:58 12/11/2011) is the same anon that has a granny fetish. i feel REALLY sorry for his grandma, having a grandson as sick as him.
naw, i have plenty of ego. when you've graduated from a school as good as mine, it's only natural for me to be a bit cocky.
But the fact that you think i don't have an ego means you just gave away that you don't. And you live in a basement. What a loser =)

Another free2pay ScaMMO disappears off the planet, and absolutely nothing of value was lost.
These little shit tier scam selling vessels should all just die like this. Free2pay is a scam and a disease.
HAAHAHHAHAHAAA
Good for those retarded developers
I hope they learned a valuable FUCKING LESSON
Learn 2 BACK YOUR SHIT UP
YOU FUCKING RETARD
OH MY FUCKING GOD!!! And I thought 0verflow was incompetent.
Player: Yeah got a super rare item.
Company: Sorry closing the game forever cause shit happened.
Player: NOOOOOOOOO! [http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=nF_lJTGKFP0]
The anounce say nothing about accidental delition. They said they couldn't restore the data after emergency. Maybe they had a fire in their server room! Maybe their raid controller started to malfunction right before the emergency and they didn't have time to repair it.
Show some brains ppl
the young girls in your family look so pretty
We accidentally the game
WHAT? The whoel game?
From the screenshots, we can conclude that the game was an accident from the beginning.
Would be funny to see WoW being "accidentally" deleted.
No backup? I'd always know that they have a backup server somewhere, unless their IT is stupid enough to transfer all the data to the current server.
pardon my english.
maybe they didn't have a backup server? must be cost cutting...
what makes me wonder is what happened to the local raid backups? it seems unlikely that the mainframe would fail, then their local backups would fail, then their backup's backup server would fail (if ever it even existed).
other than that there's a lot of retards here in sankaku talking about what they don't understand... that's just sad...
Its obvious a publicity stunt to make interest soar in a game that people thought they could never play again.
what else would you expect from japan?
lmao how the heck do you accidently delete your own game? Maybe some disgruntedly employee killed it. But looks kinda fun, but aye customers will sting but anyone that developed it will probably be raw if they gave a damn about what they made.
Mental note: Never play any games that come out from this developer/company.
no disaster recovery center seriously??
Just goes to show how ridiculously silly micro-transactions are in the real world.
People really need to get it through their heads:
1) No data is permanent.
2) All data can be copied.
3) All data can be modified.
4) All of the above can and will have real world consequences at some point.
These are not new concepts, they are immutable consequences of living in this universe.
Wrong. All data IS permanent, if you do proper backups.
Well close to permanent, you do get a stage in which the medium upon which the data is kept is no longer readable by more modern technology.
(I've run into that problem myself. Data was kept on DDS tapes, and we had to plunk it over onto the regular Mainframe. Problem was, we didn't have a player anymore.)
Or there's the decomposition aspect of the technology used. Tapes do degrade over years, even CD/DVDs will in due time. (Hence why we had to put it onto the Mainframe.)
What a bunch of useless fools. Seriously.
If only they used Macs! Then they would have had Time Machine.
They probably used Lunix.
Macs can't run games, they run only cancer.
Time machine doesn't work when the harddrive is physically damaged.
Now that is hilarious. xD
this game looks like garbage, like the rest of the orean mmos
must be the NHK conspiracy
They found a virus called "Ishihara.exe"
Only in Japan
RIP to the goldfarmers in that game, lulz! ;p
Imagine WoW accidentally getting deleted...
...wow
The sound of a million virgins cry out
You mean wizard ?
More like: Millions of suicides.
You mean "...and were suddenly silenced"
^Implying that the majority of the visitors on this site, including himself, isn't a virgins.
Oh teh irony~

>the feel when you invest so much time into it and accidentally.
They could rebuild it using the code from the freeservers.
With the innumerable man-hours subsequently freed for productive use, humanity creates utopia on earth...
...or they just move on to other games... but I prefer the former scenario.
TBH, it wouldn't make that much of a difference in the long run. Have you seen how many private/pirate servers there are out there. Granted there is a difference between the official and pirate servers but still.......
id be happy actually, and i play it lol
I can just see the unemployment figures jump 11 million...
In other news some game company deleted their MMO, some poor SBO went Delete * FROM during server maintenance and couldn't perform a rollback.
I am laready switching to Call of duty. at lease there you need to grind only once every game release (unless you are an epeen fool and go prestige)
At least by doing this, they are forcing Long Term NEETS, Pathetic Otaku Virgins, Unsocial Cowards and Addicts of the game to get off their ass and do something with their lives.
Maybe Japan has a slightly increased chance of increasing their population...*cough* Who am I kidding? The Japanese have become spineless tools now.
If WoW suffered the same fate. We'll just end up seeing more "WoW Freakouts" on youtube. Maybe a little more extreme even since some people are willing to destroy their own PC for a deleted character/account.
not even sure if Blizz could accidentally delete WoW if they tried.
supposedly they have back-ups upon back-ups of everything, to the point where they can restore your characters you stopped playing and deleted years ago.
^
This pretty much. They got back ups dating back to the start of the game. You created and deleted a char back in 2006?
You can have a GM bring it back for you, just got to remember, you only get 3 "Get out of Jail"-cards in total, and you might want to keep some in case of your account getting hacked.
Ever seen that video of a million pigs being buried alive in YouTube..?
Imagine them as WoW players after it gets deleted...
