ACE Strikes Back – Weakly

anime-contents-expo.png

The Anime Contents Expo will go ahead after all, although it seems the anime industry is now thoroughly cowed as they are still participating in TAF and have dropped all mention of opposing censorship.

The Anime Contents Expo will go ahead shortly after TAF on the 31st of March and 1st of April, at the Makuhara Messe in Chiba. Admission is ¥1500 for those over 3, and 50,000 attendees are expected.

Their site is also now active again, after having been reduced to a placeholder for many months with no word whatsoever on its existence or future plans.

However, their official press release has dropped all mention of protesting Ishihara’s manga ban, instead presenting their belated restaging of the event as being “out of  gratitude to the fans who supported ACE 2011” (somewhat rich coming from Kadokawa).

The original event was explicitly presented as being an act of defiance against hypocritical efforts of the Tokyo government to simultaneously denounce manga as the domain of perverts and deviants whilst managing a major anime event.

As Kadokawa and company are still listed as major participants in TAF, have not opted for the more provocative move of scheduling the event on the same day as TAF, dropped all talk of opposing Ishihara, and took so long to actually bother updating anyone about the event, there are plenty of doubts being expressed as to whether their heart is really in it.

Congratulations you just won this thread.
    That is the right answer.

The reason everything is happening as we see it right now is because they struck a deal. Ishihara gets to keep the ban but it simply won't be enforced. Kinda like how prostitution is technically illegal but is out on the open and everywhere despite some technicalities that aren't even enforced in some cases.

Now somebody really see through this. Good, so there are still someone with brain here.

All this crap, blah blah blah, noisy noisy noisy.... and so on

I also hear that those from Tokyo government try to defend their shitty law as "gender equality", which mean back to 0, like Agnes Chan ages ago.

So... like Eustacle (in Courage the Cowardly Dog Show) always say "yeah yeah yeah, blah blah blah" Anything else? No? Then back to my hentai, u guy have fun talking WITHOUT doing anything. See ya, morons

Well, I'm not saying Kadokawa & consorts were bribed, but given that there's little to lose for the industry by not being on TAF if there's already a different con, money must be involved somewhere.
But apart from bribes other scenarios are possible.
The publishers are one industry, but they are competitors; not being at a con where your competitors are present could be a disadvantage. And if one publisher decides the ban won't affect it, well...
Or perhaps the publishers have figured out a way to make money from the ban. As I understand it banned material can still be sold (‘discreetly’) but not be shown on the telly. Perhaps fans will pay a premium for the difference.

I think you're a bit misinformed. Ron Paul is pretty much a political black sheep. The media invites him to debates out of pure obligation, and gives him as little time as possible. In a country where media is life, he'll never be president, sad as that makes me.

Ishihara would be more like Bush. People hated him and most of what he did, but he still won in the vote and got to do more of the same.

Ishithara doesn't even compare to Bush

Bush had a balanced record on the environment (mostly bad, but he supported biofuel development and set up the two largest US maritime sanctuaries), a bad record on war (I'm not argueing that the Iraqi war was bad necessarily, but he had the wrong people in charge, the insurgency could have been won the first half year), a good record on security, a bad record on civil rights and a mixed record on the economy (he did fairly well by pre-2008 metrics but failed to stop the deregulation that started with Reagan). He has moments of charm and is generally good at selecting advisors but tends to rely too strongly on them (which worked out with Cheney and Condolezza and Powell, but not Rumsfeld) but is overall clumsy diplomatically speaking.

Ishihara on the other hand has badly impacted the economy going on and is restricting civil rights, but for no appreciable reason. I dunno about the environment, but I suspect he's somewhere he's mainstream, except he supports nuclear power (civilian), which is necessary at the moment. He hasn't had much of an impact on defense, but in general has the correct idea that Japan should have a defense in name as well, but is horribly out of step with the government, Japan's international partners and the public.
As for charm... well, he is old and appeals to his electorate, but a lot of the things he says would be utterly, utterly unacceptable outside of his political scene.

If Bush had said 9/11 was divine punishment and that homos/geeks are genetically polluted and that foreigners should leave he would have lost 2004 by a landslide.
Granted America is a cosmopolitan nation and Japan is very isolationist, but my point stands that despite the milquetoast mediocrity of America leaders since Clinton on economics and Reagan on foreign policy is incomparable to the catastrophe that is Japanese democratic politics.

And is a religious fundamentalist, totally hypocritical on subsidies and talking about "what the market wants" (the market wants renewables and he's begging for federal dollars for oil and nuclear projects in his district), thinks the government has every right to be in every woman's uterus, but can abandon people in the gutter after they come out, and backs the Constitution Party, which runs the most vitrolic of Dominionists, neo-Nazis and white supremacists.

Hey guy, major major otaku here. You know nothing about Ron Paul or the philosophy he espouses. If you understood anything about freedom or the constitution which are Ron Paul's core values you would know he'd have no power to do any kind of government regulation. Where the hell in "get the government out of everything" did you get lost and somehow decide that means he's George Bush III? (Wait, that's Obama)... Sorry, I can't tolerate blatant righteous ignorants. And wasn't it under Clinton when the most major video game and television censorship was passed? History, my friend.

"Real" man is really difficult term...
    Are they suppose to be:
Strong? Rich? Romantic? Charming? Protective? Caring? Inteligent? loyal? or just manly?

"Real" mens only exist if there are "real" womens... If womens only care how rich and charming mens are... then other areas degenerates.

and so if real men only exist in africa and china... then do real womens too girls.

They will realize that this is not a big issue, go back to the status quo and move on.

Personally, I think that Ishihara has not gone after To Love-Ru Darkness because he knows he would lose the court case and have his precious law overturned.

I wonder how 'cowed' they really are. The fact is that the law basically said that certain mangas had to be sold in adult book stores or adult sections in stores that had 'strong sexual themes'.

I'm usually on the side of paranoia on this subject but the more I looked, the more I realized that this would not really cause a problem for the average person who wanted to buy a sexually strong manga or doujin in the real world.

Hell, most people get those things online today, so this law doesn't even come into effect for most with access to any computer whatsoever.

I don't think that's the case here, trying to ban porn as such would probably never work out.

If the anime industry hadn't gone so heavily into the ecchi moe stuff in the recent years, I doubt there would've been any response from the government (extreme leftists or not) because there had always been a spicier moment or two in any anime before.

That said, having ero stuff in pretty much any mainstream manga/anime can be a turnoff for many potential customers who are not into it for porn. So I can see how a more appropriate adult anime and manga definition can help improve the quality of the industry.

Religion should be kept out of state affairs.

As for Aki Sora, the author had stated it was banned because of incestuous content and that reprinting it as an adult manga would be within the realm of possibilities but then it would have to be remade because it was not written just for the adult audience.

True, even if you do go out to buy adult manga/doujin the worst thing people can do is give you dirty looks, which doesn't even matter since you won't probably ever meet that person again. The law isn't as bad as most people claim it to be.
