School Buses: Japan = “Excessively Cute” US = “Tanks”

Chinese have been pondering the differences between the school-buses of Japan, noted for their “extreme cuteness,” as compared to those of the US – described as being “like tanks.”

What these reveal about the respective national characters of their countries is open to rather broad interpretation.
Thomas the Tank Engine and Pokemon themed buses certainly seem likely to be inordinately popular with small children everywhere.
On the other hand, the curious American obsession with driving their children everywhere in aggressively styled yellow rivet-encrusted juggernauts does indeed seem rather more a reflection of the USA’s national character (whether characterised as imbecilic machismo, sensible safety conciousness, or total fear and paranoia regarding child safety)…

Well seeing as that "Bus" is not mixed schools... that scenario would not happen. Nor would I suspect that those at a prestigious all girls school would be riding in such a mode of public transport.

The hello kitty bus is the only one which has a tolerable design. The other ones are way over the top, especially those buses trying to look like a train °-_-
Some of them I would have been embarrassed to be seen on as a kid but the space shuttle,whale, trains, and Thomas the tank buses would have been awesome.
I'd take the tank bus anyday. People don't know how to drive worth crap. I'd take a bus that would crap all over a h2 or jeep if it got into a wreck rather than the hello kitty bus.

I actually agree; I rather the brats were inside the American yellow buses (which ironically looks almost exactly the same as a prison bus) and be safe than sorry.
Who says that the 'better looking' buses are less safe? It might turn out that the Pika-bus is more safe than the tank buses we have here in the United States.
On a side note, the prison buses are just a modified version of a school bus.

True. They are bought cheap, retrofitted with bars on the windows and other things, and then put into service as prison buses.
I'm not entirely convinced the yellow buses are extremely durable. When I first began driving, I was rear-ended by one at a stop sign. My jeep drove away fine and the bus got completely totaled.
Granted, my experience = all yellow buses, but it is something to consider.
i have the similar experience, i was hit at the back of my BICYCLE on red light by a big rig... i felt the bump and when i turned back, his truck was totaled, and i ride away fine
You aren't the only one who has noticed that. One time, the brakes went out on the bus that I was coming home on 16 years ago in high school.
The driver tried her best to stop the bus with the emergency brake, but wasn't able to before we smashed into a car in front of us.
The people in the car got out fine and the car was fixable. The bus was totaled and wasn't fixable.
Of course, that was a bus dating back to the 1950's!
Same here. I was on my scooter and a bus hit me. It scooted me up a little bit, but when I stopped and looked behind me, the bus was totaled.
But in all fairness, we haven't seen the Hello Kitty bus tested against a Hummer.

Basically this, School Buses are built that tough for a reason, and the reason is safety above all else.
I'm inclined to agree. I remember when I was in high school someone rear-ended my bus when it was stopped once. Basically everything between the front tip and the windshield was crushed in, and the bus had... a kind of dented bumper maybe?
