Call me a 'moralfag', but the shibari scene and the aftermath of it made me really uncomfortable, specifically because there was no consent given. This anime has a lot of really good qualities, but episode 3 isn't one of them. It was just ridiculous.

The first two episodes tried to build a serious atmosphere, and then the third episode was complete comedy... quite a dramatic shift in tone.

I'm one of the people who don;t even recognize the third episode as part of the official continuity of the storyline. Other than that, the show was entirely great.
However with that said: Don't let one bad episode ruin your choice at catching what is a rare treat in anime: a serious drama that gets a lot right. :D
That's true; HanaIro is otherwise pretty special. I can always skip episode 3 if I watch it again, just like how I ignore the existence of Gundam SEED Destiny.
I think you're missing that it was comedy and nothing negative resulted from it. This reminds of this guy on another site who said that cartoon violence in any form was advocating domestic abuse and should be outlawed.
Like I said, I didn't find the scene or its connected scenes amusing. Besides, it had a sexually abusive air to it, and it added nothing other than 'fanservice' for people who are into that sort of thing.

There can't be any cultural discrepancy to miss, non-consensual is non-consensual no matter what potential excuses any culture out there makes up.
That said, episode 3 is not to be taken seriously (like, at all). Just think of it as mindless comedy. I'll admit it made me feel a bit uncomfortable too though.

i admit some eps are very soapy i.e. ending an ep right on a cliff hanger or being bitchy for the sake of being bitchy. nevertheless, it has decent storyline, atmosphere and it has some great seiyuus:

chiaki omigawa - nazuna (hidamari sketch)
