Genshiken is the happy otaku group/circle that does happy things about otaku stuff.
Welcome to the NHK is the depressing side of the fence, with the NEETs, hikikomori, otaku and the dame-ningen. the life style in which they live. And in some way bits and pieces can be related to the average otaku in real life, except none have a misaki to consul them.

Sure Tatsuhiro Satou or Kaoru Yamazaki from NHK are NEET and otaku respectively but they are certainly not that loveable.
Daru on the other hand is revered as a role model otaku. As previously mentioned, he can build a time machine and got himself a busty loli wife. He deserves mad respect.
He is the pinnacle that all Otaku wants to reach.

Yamazaki is a must; my favourite NHK character because he really tried hard to follow his otaku dreams and try to get into the industry, even if it didn't work out as he expected.
There are many god-tier otaku in anime, a Top 10 list barely holds a small portion of them.

I mean, I know the series is good and sort, but their personality is one big fail as human. Drugs, Hikikomori and everything. They might be good as a 'character', but not really 'likable' otakus.
