Gintama at number 3? Gintama is hard to recommend to even the most die hard anime fans because of it's INSANENESS at times.
Love the series, but you have to be honest here, heh..
they should be introduced to something tamer...like Great Teacher Onizuka.

I was surprised to not see it on this list, then I remembered what people here say about Japanese viewers having the attention spans of goldfish. I honestly thought the anime that got so much overblown hype just cause of some shock value would have appeared here, but I guess it's fading away.

I think Gintama is the anime equivalent of South Park. Even people who don't usually watch animated shows love South Park because it's random and full of pop culture references to make them laugh a lot for 30 minutes without too much commitment to a storyline. Same for Gintama.

I recommended my non-anime-fan friend Bible Black, he had a fun night and became an anime fan afterwards.

hell yeah it is! Even Testament are fans, they made an instrumental named after and based on it. F'kin a right!!
The uncensored BB is the best, although Discipline is not a bad one.

Yes, I included anime movies as well; the reason I did is because I have a good friend who did not have a clue what anime was or how amazing the difference is between American animation and Japanese anime. I showed her the anime movie Ponyo and she loved it, as she did Kik's Delivery Service.
Now she wants to watch anime whenever I come over ^_^

I think aside from Code Geass some might like something of a surprise or beat the impossible in a worse case scenario type anime like Cowboy Bebop, Lupin the 3rd and Coyote Ragtime Show I could be wrong but that's what I like in an anime.

Angel Beats! deserves to be on a top 20 list not like some of the other stuff on the last list.
That's cuz japanese ppl love to forget old/classic anime.
If you ask them what anime they do remember, 90% of them has just finished airing or the usual Clannad, One Piece, Case Closed, etc.
BUT, this time I have to agree with Usagi Drop. Good anime for non-watchers. Don't know if deserves first place, but recommendable.

where is the ghibli films? It should be here, it's japan's disney, it would be suitable for any target audience!
I hate ghibli. It's set a sort of stereotype in america of what the limits of anime are, which is a grave misconception.
Only westerners fap to ghibli because it's basically disney. It severely limits the scope of anime known to the west.

Oh its popular, generally amongst children and adults. People just don't worship it like in America.

Recommending Gintama to someone who haven`t watched any anime is bad, since it parodies other anime.
It`s like recommending Seitokai no Ichizon to them and expecting them to understand every joke :P
Because it´s from a westerner point of view.
Gintama references many things that people in Japan have heard of even once and focuses heavily on Showbiz like Celebrities and popular show parodies.
I don't get most of the references in Gintama but I still find it funny as hell. You don't have to understand them to enjoy the show.
