US reviewers have been raving over the recent American release of Disgaea 4, with some going so far as to award it 100%, lavishing praise on its highly refined SRPG gameplay whilst maintaining diplomatic reserve about other elements…
Reviewers seem to have generously overlooked the decidedly hackneyed plot and still awful (if improved) graphics in favour of the highly refined strategic RPG gameplay the series is a byword for – an appropriate evaluation, given the expectations of fans:

I now see sardines in a new light...
I have always been charmed by NIS's sprite-based games ever since Phantom Brave and Disgaea graced my life almost a decade ago...
Their games will always be one of my 'Top-Tier' RPGs that are all about fun rather than trying to be what others already are...
It's one of the factors (aside from their wakilicious pettanko overlords, beauty queens, reincarnated male-turned-female main characters, trainee angels, and delishush cake protagonists) that attracted me...
Screw Graphics when you can have this much fun and the story is pretty laid-back and does not require you to question life (only that question is "Why can't I have been born in their world?")...
So get Disgaea 4 if you have not gotten them...
Flonne (both of her) awaits your love~
(I have my NIS Premium Collector's Edition that came with an "Artbook", a "Soundtrack CD" and "9 figures" in a separate box...Not to mention a figure of Flonne in her "Fallen Angel" and "Trainee Angel" form as well as my new favorite character, "DESCO"...
120 dollars spent...I regret nothing~)
the story is pretty laid-back>
I don't know about laid-back... I mean there are pretty gut wrenching moments in the first one imo...
oh, I got that version, too. came in a week early, so I got to grind a bit earlier than some people. still haven't beaten the main story, but the gameplay is just how I remembered, and loved it. kinda wish that the male samurai were in this one, but I'll just have to settle with making a female samurai and have it go through a ninja reincarnation (for the deathblow evility).
dunno how many hours I've put into it, but I feel as though I may put in at least 1k hours, for ultimate completion.
Yes Yes I was happy with the game as well, even shocking enogth that voice actors in English were great with there roll. I hope that game will continue, I want a break for all these shooters games that come out every three days....
heck the Japanese version by itself coasted the same even with out the special items over 120 without the shipping added...
Sardines, Foodstuff of Champions
Yummy sardines~ in 120 dollars *_*
were the mackarels already sold out? damn,I'm too late as it seems
i too see them in a new light..i never knew how powerful they really were
Anyone who says this game is all the same as the previous one and brings nothing new has obviously not played it. There is plenty of new stuff to master on top of all the returning stuff.
Hell, why am I on here when I could be playing D4?
Every single new game is a clone of the previous iteration with minor tweaks and additions and a new, yet similarly toned story campaign. Not that that's a bad thing. In fact it's exactly what I expect and exactly what I want.
"stuff stuff" zero explanation zero examples...fuck off fanboy
"criticize criticize" points out how an honest opinion has no basis umad?... fuck off anon
Disgaea 2 brought pirates and Land of Carnage
Disgaea 3 brought the club system, skill power ups, Evilities, X-Dimension, Class World, new geo blocks, Magichange.
Y U so mad? U no laid?
How can you say the graphics are "awful"?
Surely they are "awesome" for not trying to be as pretty as other, not as good, jrpg's on the market.
No, your logic is flawed.
They're pretty good if only because they look crisp and detailed, even when retaining their 2D, Disgaea-ish charm. In fact, they look better than most OMGSOEPIXGRAPHIXGUISE games, if only because sprites are much more appealing and easy on the eye.
They could have worked on the animation of the game. Which still looks mostly the same it did since I was a little kid. XD
Gameplay-wise, I respectfully have to decline the game. Most strategy games can kind of teeter to having too many things to manage, but Disgaea games DEFINITELY has too much for me to manage. But I can see how the hardcore fans can like it.
...You're joking right?
How are they awful? They have greatly improved the sprite work from the previous titles.
Pretty much this. I don't understand what he's saying, unless he's indicting it for not being completely 3d garbage?
Actually I believe King of Fighters 12/13 has exceptional 2D sprites as well.
Do name a game that had more detailed sprites than D4. Or enviormental textures that can amount to that.
Hard Mode: It has to look good on 720p at the very least.
Imposiburu Modo: No Vanillaware.
C'mon, I'm waiting.
I guess? They modeled them in 3D and drew over them to make it "2D"?
Yep 8:08 is definitely not a troll, trust me on this one guys.
Disgaea 1-3 Cleric on the left, Disgaea 4 Cleric on the right:

PS2 IS OBVIOUSLY BETTER GUIZ.
Yet the PS2 had better more detailed sprites.
Improvement means little if the end result is lacking in quality.
Take a good long look at FFXII and other uber-pretty rpg's and then think about whether I'm joking or not.
Bare in mind that Disgaea has a level cap of 9999 and is known for uber-level extra bosses; in addition to having varied character rosters. As well as never forcing you to use only specific characters through linear portions of the game.
The game may not be pushing an insane amount of polygons like Crysis, Metro 2033, or Dirt 3 but what it does have is an absolutely brilliant aesthetic. It keeps true to its anime style and manages to look absolutely brilliant without trying to copy FF: XIII or something similar.
In D2, you had to use Rozy to fight against a certain overlord. But aside from a few minor story encounters, you are right, the game lets you play it any way you want. Too bad the game is designed to favor playing only a few characters, unless you don't have a life. Maxing out aptitudes in the class world takes forever, even if you can beat every floor in 2 actions.
yay! Another free stuff!
Disgaeas (Disgaeii?) don't come along to often, so there is something to be said for giving the people who love them exactly what they want without trying to change it up and destroying it in the process.
You sir have earned a quarter of an internet...not.
I can understand if it's not peoples' cup of tea, but not giving any other games or genres the time of day because it doesn't look like your idea of epic is damn ignorant and retarded. How many people were waiting for Duke Nukem Forever for years on end? Disgaea's appeal comes from its 2D and its plots have enough angst and humor to keep me playing. Despite the setting, the game could be very serious and messed up if it wanted to be. If you play Soul Nomad you'd know. It's different and all the better. Haven't played since 1 so a lot of this stuff is hitting me all at once, but I'm having fun learning it all. And yes, I was the only one who was at the midnight release for D4 while everyone got Dead Island. Don't get me wrong, I do plan on playing it, but I somehow feel a little proud knowing after they hype is done, a lot of people are going to be trading it back in after a 3 days or a week, barring the game isn't as short as lots of stuff is these days.
Oh yes, But isn't that why we all go back to these Haradaya games?? The sprites, comedy and constant grinding and crying when you get your first level 100 character?? Yea, they can take my money anytime!
I like Disgaea but i DO think that N1 could have put a lot more effort into the animation department. HD is well and nice but the sprites still move like they did years ago.
Why bother with the picture if you ca hardly read the words?
I've only played the first Disgaea and in a lot of ways it felt lacking. Are the sequels better about that?
The game-play is still the same, has it's own story, and the graphics are greatly improved. I would know this because I bought the game on it's release date.
iv never been a disgaea fan, iv tried 1-3 but never got into it =/
i may pick up 4 when its cheap at gamestop none the less xD
It's not really a game for the lesser intellect, so don't bother.
Wow Im noticing alot of people on Sankaku dont like this game
Well I dont give a fuck about them
And I dont give a fuck about the reviews or graphics
Im just gonna play it for the characters
Graphics don't always make a game and 3D does not always mean it's better than 2D. For Disgaea, the simplistic sprites are characteristic to the game and deviating too far from that would be sacrilege.
Really starting to miss those good old 2D sidesrolling beat-em ups...
I'd be pretty disgusted if the characters in Disgaea would be remodeled and 3Dfied to become more like FF characters.
I can accept anime-like 3D though.
Awesome can't wait get it.
So now they love "sexualized young girls"?
they're probably making up for the low scores that were given to Neptunia, for the same reason.
anyway, great game. still in the main story, but preparing for the post-game, which I have high expectations for.
neptunia sucked ass bro. and nobody from that company paid enuff cash.
YOU FOOLS!!
Each of you, take a Sardine in hand!
Idiotic review is idiotic--as are some of the people commenting. The Disgaea series brings you complex and addictive SRPGs beyond all others. Disgaea 4 is clearly no exception. The main story, which has been sufficiently lengthy throughout all games, can even be satisfying enough. And if you want to go hardcore, there is so much more to do.. It's scary, lol. Clearly, this review is bs and I highly doubt the person played any of the previous titles long enough to realize Disgaea 4 DID bring a lot of new features to the table. I'm quite enjoying the storyline, thanks, but again, ignorant review.
My favorite complaint from non-fan, "gamer" critics is when it comes to graphics. That gets old, and is a very flawed argument. Not only does Disgaea 4 have nice, polished 2D sprites/graphics, but that's JUST what you need for these kinds of games. THIS IS A TACTICAL RPG, dumbasses. You NEVER make it completely 3D models. Remember the good-ol-days when you'd play the rather epic Fire Emblem titles on GBA? Yeah? Well, now the Fire Emblem series is a piece of crap ever since the Gamecube and Wii games... With fully 3D models, it was not only atrocious gameplay, but it was also awkward. It DID NOT work. Tactical RPGs should always stick to HD 2D sprites/models and primarily top-down perspective. Isometric graphics are a must in this genre. On a side note, you don't play chess with your face on the board, examining the pieces full 3 dimensional depth, do you? Even if "good graphics" was of concern, I would think that's more a bonus to a game, not a necessary trait to determine a game's epicocity.
But really, that's the issue with "gamers" these days (quotes to denote sarcasm and discredit them being real gamers). They're so bent on supremely superior 3D graphics that it becomes their only determinant for purchasing games. What they get, more often than not, is crap. Shit games with shitty gameplay and shitty plots. They're drawn to pretty, shiny things like four year olds... That's today's generation of "gamers". Mainstream isn't necessarily bad, but in many cases, because the majority of customers are dolts, mainstream games are shit. (Refer to Halo, Call of Duty...any FPS.) It's good NIS doesn't listen to non-fans and keeps it's 2 (2.5?) D graphics. Had they chose to change that, majority of their passionate fanbase would turn away from it and stop buying..And NIS can't afford to lose those fans. I really doubt people would stop talking shit and enjoy Disgaea games even if that was changed. It needs to remain for the fans and for the company itself to survive. Disgaea IS a quality game series and the greatest strategy RPG series ever, no doubt, and that's that.
Games pissing me off, requires 3.66 or above .... fuck that i love my cfw :(, having to wait to torrent a patched eboot of a game i fucking bought so i can actually play it is beyond obnoxious.
Too bad. Some generic characters didn't get some remodeling though.
Still keeping the old looks for nostalgia.
I WANT TO BE A PRINNY... IF I CANT I WANT THE HAT...
