The almost universally dreadful results of the 30 year history of game to movie adaptations, particularly where Hollywood is involved, are highlighted here by Japanese movie fans in this unsurprisingly abysmal ranking.
1. Super Mario Bros.
2. Tokimeki Memorial
3. Street Fighter II
4. Tekken
5. Yakuza (Ryu ga Gotoku)
6. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
7. Resident Evil
8. Otogirisou
9. Onechanbara
10. Tomb Raider
The worst may yet be to come – after all, blockbuster game hits like Pong, Space Invaders and Tetris still seem promisingly untapped…

mario bros was actually pretty funny :)
Shit, I like that movie. Sure it didn't exactly follow the plot of any of the games, except for the fact that they had to go save a princess from bowser, inside his fortress, full of (admittedly 8 foot tall) goombas, bob ombs and other things. The movie was fun, crazy, and actually had a lot of things in it if you are paying attention, like snifits. How many of you knew that they actually had snifits in that movie?
Yeah, it has basically nothing to do with the games, but I really liked that movie. It's just that funny and over the top. Jut the elevator scene with the goombas is so damn hilarious! xD
The Bob-ombs being cute walking TNTs was hilarious.
I just HAD to watch it because of all the bad press and it definitely is a very funny movie. It's so bad, it's fun.
I don't think Bob-ombs being a walking, cute little terror devices will fly nowadays.
yup, that movie should have been called something like "Italian American Prumber Brothers save a Princess", and forget the mario branding
"Prumber"?
they had yoshi!!!
What are snifits?
Your kidding right? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recurring_enemies_in_the_Mario_series
Scroll down to shy guys. I kinda forgot they were called shy guys first, but they are in that movie. Most people don't notice.
Are you frikkin retarded?
Who the hell calls Shy-Guys snifts?
The snifits are shy guys that spew cannonballs. They are even in yoshi games too.
Anyone who's played super mario RPG? They come from the same class of stuff, and since they ARE wearing snifit masks in the movie, maybe thats why. Garbage truck scene. Anyway since you are an anon tard I won't give you any more of my time. Retard.
Lol, when I saw the Mario Bros. poster it made me cringe. Then I saw Street fighter, cringe x2.
Its good if you disregard it as a Mario bros. franchise. Ever they changed the title and character names it could have been a decent movie.
Mario Bros was so bad it was kinda good like an 80s scifi B movie.
when i saw it i was so happy they made a mario movie. in a recent game informer they trashed the mario movie. if they tried to remake it now, it would be the definition of bad. the old one i thought was cool, because it had some similarities, but it was it's own thing. seems like critics are the only ones that don't like it, every one on here for the most part seems to like it, as do my friends.
Where are the mortal kombat movies? they sucked phat 8====D
Yeah, I noticed that Mortal Kombat didn't make the rankings. Granted, the 1st one wasn't a total failure, but the second one shot itself in the foot. XD Dead or Alive's nowhere to be seen either, it's not like the premise is any different from Tekken.
Double Dragon aswell should be right up there that's one of the worst.
i loved those movies. whenever i heard the mortal kombat theme, it got my blood pumping
yeah as a little kid i loved mario movie . of course i havent played the game yet , or was unable to draw connection between two .
So was the first Street Fighter movie thanks, in part, to Jean-Claude Van Damme.
i agree, if you don't take it seriously it's a good fun movie :)
I'd like it to have a sequel ;)
I'd question the sanity of anyone that did take it seriously...
Tomb Raider seriously?
The problem with most movie critics is that they view a film and ask "is it art?".
The only real criteria should be "is it entertaining?".
well if you watch King of Fighters the movie, it's not art and definitely not entertaining.
Hilarious?
Way to totally miss Anons point! He's not saying any of these flicks are good or bad. He's saying that the 'pros' who judge them in the media are idiots!
I think they look for entertainment value too...
Street Fighter the first movie target audience probably a 6-8 years old.
Street Fighter movie was good because it was so shameless that it could only be taken in as all action no brains movie. It is much better than corny shit like Saving private Ryan that tries to be serious with all the fucking recycled cliches. The movie almost made me a Nazi symphatiser.
RIP Raul Julia
"OF COURSE!"
I agree, Street Fighter didn't have much to do with the actual games, except the names, but it was a lot of fun to watch, same with the first Mortal Kombat.
Yeah, Raul Julia's Bison was the best ever. He let his grandkids pick his final role, because he knew he only had one more left in him before he was done. Legend of Chun-Li was absolute shite, because it starred "that hot chick from Smallville. Who looks kind of Asian. Or maybe Eskimo..." Fuck you and your agent, Kristin Kreuk. =P
"For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday."
Street Fighter was reasonably decent with regards to the entertainment factor. They simply dialed it all to 11, knowing that you just can't do this sort of thing "realistically" in a live action movie.
That and the whole too big of a cast to squeeze into a movie issue, and all things considered it could've been far worse.
Tomb Raider 1, doesn't really belong on that list either. Again, reasonably entertaining, special effects were just about right for a flick belonging to this genre (think Indiana Jones essentially), and the camera work and choreography was pretty decent as well.
The aforementioned Double Dragon, DoA, KoF or even the latter MK movies, or basically anything done by Uwe Boll is far more worthy of this list.
And on a side note, regarding the Mario movie, Bob Hoskins absolutely loathes the movie. It's the one movie he'd unmake out of everything he's ever done, if he had the possibility of removing it from existence.
Yet, Street Fighter's M.Bison portrayal (by Raul Julia) is still considered to be an iconic villain.
Personally to me, the Street Fighter was totally worth its time.
The only reason anyone would watch Street Fighter the movie was to revel in the great ham and cheese that is M. Bison.
Why'd I settle for seeing something that's just entertaining when I could see something that's entertaining *and* is art??
Don't blame movie critics for films that a greedy producer wanted to make a fast buck on.
heck i do enjoy the Resident Evil Flicks, i don't know if they are good or not,
but as you say they are entertaining.
Most of them are entertaining only on the "Oh my fucking god, it's so bad it's hilarious" level.
Just like Half-Life: Full Life Consequences and Doom: Repercussions of Evil.
So far the first Mortal Kombat movie is OK not bad but the sequel is kinda Shocked.
@ Anon 22:40
The real criteria in Hollywood is "Can we palm this shit off on the fans and make a ton of cash irregardless of the fact that it, in no way, shape or form resembles the the original concept of the game".
You know, that's exactly the same thing that happens with many Anime fans as well.
Right like Dragonball Evolution maybe the Top 1.
Dragonball Evolution wasn't actually that horrible though compared to some of the ones in this list. Just about as deep as a puddle. Compared to what it could have been, it was actually somewhere amusing, but it was something for like... 8-year-olds I'd say. The type of thing that they'd watch and go 'that was so cool!' and years later come back to it going 'what the fuck was I thinking...?'
The one that confuses me though is Onechanbara became a movie!? I was one of the friggan testers on that game...
I NEVER played Mario and never will be.
So I could careless, at least for Mario that is.
"I never watched Mario and never will."
"Care less"
Fixed that for you.
Bet you'd watch a Call Of Duty game, though. Kiddo.
What a sad childhood you had.
I was quite happy playing Giana Sisters instead as a kid.
NO mortal combat? WTF
Japanese poll. They generally don't care about non-Japanese series.
Tomb Raider isn't a Japanese franchise, bud.
It is now, considering that Eidos got bought by Square Enix a while back. :P
I'm surprised there was no mention of Dead or Alive i mean... REALLY.. DOA? no hate for doa? WTF.
