Classic schoolgirl sex slave assassin anime Kite is to be the victim of a Hollywood movie adaptation, to start filming in 2012 and be directed by David R. Ellis.
According to Variety, a Kite adaptation had been planned but dormant for some time, but now the project has been firmly reactivated with filming due to begin in January of 2012.
The movie is to be directed by David R. Ellis, director of such memorable classics as Snakes on a Plane, The Final Destination and Shark Night 3D.
For those wondering what all the fuss is about, animator/director Yasuomi Umetsu’s distinctive visual style and fastidious animation, coupled with his favouring at times explicit sexual content and violence, have given him quite a reputation, with his signature works of course being Kite (1998) and Mezzo Forte (2000), both classic nineties-style adult-themed anime.
He is also noted for having a hand in a scores of other anime in various capacities – frequently his style is very noticeable:
Kite (“A Kite” in Japan) and the similar Mezzo Forte are also noted for apparently having a somewhat better reputation overseas than in Japan – in fact, the decision to make a movie of it is prompting as much bewilderment as approval amongst Japanese anime fans:

Some severe double standards seem to be at work, considering the content of the average late night anime hardly puts its viewers in a position to demean other works for including sexual content.
If Hollywood can be relied upon to preserve the gratuitous sex scenes (presumably scenes of gratuitous violence are in no danger), it may finally have a hit anime-to-movie adaptation – although its less than stellar record so far rather cautions against such optimism.

Hollywood is a business like another, it produces what makes money, what's profitable. In other words, it makes what consumers want. I think the sterotypical cookie-cutter hollywood rape of an anime franchise is more a reflection on the American consumer then anything else.
Actually it's more a reflection on American moviegoers. Most Americans don't visit movie theaters on a regular basis, so Hollywood isn't really targeting them. The core demographic, those in their teens and early twenties who regularly go to the theater with friends, are what can make or break a movie at the theater. There's disc sales later, but those aren't usually going to be all that high if a lot of people aren't already talking about the film.
A film targeting those who don't regularly visit theaters is going to have a harder time being profitable. I imagine the majority of anime fans who are interested in a faithful adaptation aren't as likely to go see movies at the theater as those who will see anything that's showing just to have some fun with friends.
in this case rather than rape is unrape. it will be meaningless without the explicit sex scenes. and with america's puritanical view, i can't imagine what were they thinking.

for both you need premium channels like starz or atx and those shows are show on late night blocks.

Uh there's plenty of nudity in American films, but if you expect them to show the genitalia then you are right. It's actually less puritanical than Japan where those that can be naked on film are only porn stars and regular actors aren't allowed nudity.

Honestly? Seriously here? I don't think they got the guts to even go through with the Akira remake. And the story for Kite was always kinda more geared towards indie-film material.
They are late. Kite are ancient history not much of a popular for today. How about Ghost in the Shell? or Mardock Scramble?
We already had Matrix. And possibly a Deus Ex movie in the making. We don't need a live action GITS, especially when you know they're going to surely fuckup the Tachikomas one way or another.
I think that's intentional. Kite always had something of a niche audience, so they're not targeting fans of Kite so much as fans of action films in general. With a relatively obscure property, they can get the rights to produce a film relatively inexpensively, and don't have to worry about meeting the expectations of an active fan-base.
Besides, Kite has an interesting story and premise that probably should get more recognition. I'm sure they'll tone down a lot of its content, but hopefully that won't mean "PG-13" toned down.

I dunno, Kite's plot is generic action flick enough that Hollywood probably won't fuck it up too much. But it's just gonna turn out to be another typical action movie. Since when you think about it, there's really not much that sets Kite apart from any other action story.
Well, there are action, blood, sex, drama, violence in Kite; in terms of plot it's quite close to Phantom of Inferno; I guess the hentai and sex are overshadowing the plot too much.
Don't forget explosions everywhere. In kite, even the bullets explode. How awesome is that? ;)
I originally saw the cut version as a kid, and didn't even know it was a hentai until a few years back when I got a bit nostalgic and looked it up. Was a bit surprised when I watched it. =)
For the record: I like the cut version better, the sex scenes feel weird and out of place to me.
Phantom of Interno is a way more deeper story than stuff like Mezzo Forte. I did a marathon run of those anime not too long ago and it's just night and day. Phantom is actually written well and it cares way more about character depth (for all it's worth, based of the hitman motif).
Also, if Hollywood wanted to be *really* gutsy, why not just have an animated version with the actual anime creator with this distinctive animation/visual style? I have to laugh at Hollywood for thinking only live action is the 'true' art of cinema. And I'm kind of sad Japan kind of believes in it at times as well, since most new movies and manga adaptations are in live action. A select few are total anime originals (most are adapted from novels, books, games, TV shows, radio).
I just shake my head at all this need for 'adapting' to live action.
Meh it'll be easy enough to fuck up, they'll call it SUV:Special Victim's Unit "The Wrath of Olivia Benson". instead of a high school student it'll depict the scene when Olivia was "raped" at the jail and from that point on it'll depict her downfall til she leaves after Stabler kills the girl causing her to be a vigilante murdering every rapist/suspected rapist she sees.
Kite remind me of Kick-Ass movie where whats her name (action girl) and Big Daddy.
So the plot is generic enough that if they drop the rape scene we get a violent ass lolita. What better way to get frustrated teens into the movie.

You are *really* showing your complete lack of attention to Hollywood, here. Go watch what Hollywood churns out, and then try to argue about their "sanitization" of things. I'll be over here while you do, wondering how much of your soul you sold to keep that level of ignorance.
Hollywood knows that NC-17 or X ratings are too risky so they'll sanitize it down to an "R" rating for the theaters and then release a Director's Cut or Special Edition with more nudity depending on what the main actress is willing to do or will take money for.
KITE is very overrated.
If you fancy underage sex and violence I recommend Mardoc Scramble. A far superior anime.
Seriously, there's so many plot holes and things to dissect with Kite/Mezzo Forte if you have to just chalk them up to "It's just a hentai, who cares.." in all reality..
Mezzo Forte is especially harsh with random "Oh don't worry about how she was raped by homeless for like 24 hours, that was just a robot" type stuff...
But at the time, Kite (1998) was pretty good in terms of action/violence, the plot was decent, but nothing is too special, while Mardoc Scramble (2010) is so much newer, it's quite unfair to compare them with each other.

I agree with the Japanese sentiment. Apart from the eroticism, there has been nothing remarkable or even memorable about the entire property. Unless it's a porno, a Kite movie is a bland generic actioner from page one.
Knowing Hollywood's track record, they'll either omit the sex and nudity entirely, or they'll change Sawa to a 30 something and hire an actress that no one will want to see naked.
I kind of liked it. It's got a bleakness that's pretty rare, especially for an action piece.
Maybe Hollywood is turning this Kite into another Crying Freeman; it has been done already. The main plot of Kite is quite decent and it's pretty close to Phantom of Inferno.

She's actually 15 in the anime. Media Blasters changed the age in the US release to 18 and said she was a college student so there wouldn't be a shit storm. So she's really a 15 year old girl in High School and wears a seifuku.
I'm sure Hollywood will make her a grad student working on her masters and wearing a seifuku.

Well, Kite was kinda Phantom of Inferno in terms of drama and plot which was pretty decent. I guess the people were watching for the porn rather than the plot though.

I looked up on the Japanese wiki, and it says that Yasuomi Umetsu also participated for Welcome to the N.H.K., WORKING!!, Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru, Blue Exorcist, etc, but his name isn't on the indivisual anime wiki page. I wonder where they got this information from?

Wow, that seems like an odd choice for a Hollywood adaptation. I don't know how to feel about this. Kite was the first anime I ever watched that wasn't Pokemon.
