The landfall of Typhoon 12 (aka Tropical Cyclone Talas) has seen parts of Japan subject to severe flooding, with scenes of inundation reminiscent of the tsunami which devastated Fukushima earlier in the year – although at least this time there was fair warning and only two fatalities so far.

NHK provides details:
A severe tropical storm is heading north after making landfall on Japan’s southwestern island of Shikoku on Saturday morning.
The Meteorological Agency says tropical storm Talas is moving slowly north over Shikoku.
It has an atmospheric pressure of 982 hectopascals at its center and winds of up to 108 kilometers per hour.
The storm is bringing record heavy rain to western and eastern Japan.
In Kami-kitayama Village, Nara Prefecture, over 115 centimeters of rain has fallen since Tuesday.
Daisen in Tottori Prefecture has recorded more than 80 centimeters of rain and areas along mountains in Shikoku have received 80 centimeters.
Mountainous areas in Tokai and north of the Kanto region had more than 60 centimeters of rain.
Weather officials say the storm will retain strength and keep moving north, and is expected to reach the Sea of Japan coast late on Saturday night.
NHK has learned that Talas left two persons dead, 5 missing, and 47 others injured.
Authorities across the nation issued evacuation orders and advisories for more than 28,000 households, warning against swollen rivers and mudslides.

just wait, sooner or later Ishihara will say:
this is divine punishment for otaku
I actually think this is divine punishment for anime and loli censorship... Let us sacrifice the old malicious governor !
i still think assassins have more success rate than rainmakers, but somebody wanted to punish ISHIT for his words in more showy way... well, ALL HAIL LOLI!!!
After the March 11 quake, the entire island subsided (sank) 3 meters, in some places as much as 5 meters.
Its not a laughing matter.
The true ugliness has yet to be seen, because of the Winter Storm Surges yet to come.
If it were punishment for Ishihara it would have hit Tokyo.
Perhaps all this rain isn't to punish Ishihara directly, but all those who voted for him?
Oh god, maybe you're right. QUICK SOMEONE FIND A WAY TO APPEASE THE GODS!
and where have all those people been evacuated to?
Fuck! If we pray enough to God maybe a lightning will strike on him.
As for that big flood it most probably a High Tide maybe in a couple of days the water will be out...I hope.
and just who do you think would make a good replacement?
I say f*** politics once and for all!
I'm pretty sure Ishihara is a vampire now. Evidence mounts.
HAHAHA!
Shaman 1: Oh heavens! Please accept this sacrifice!
*Offers Ishihara's carcass
Suddenly all the rain and flood dries out!
Resident 1: We're SAVED!
Resident 2: Now please give us loli!
No its probably because Ishihara's main character in the novel decided to stick his rock hard penis through the dam instead of a Paper wall.
man, sucks to be an island nation
not really, no disasters in the UK, winds from the atlantic warm our winters and cool our summers... no hurricanes or earthquakes or tsunamis
Well in Japan you don't come to the sea the sea comes to you.
That's not like soviet Russia at all!
No, No, it's "In modern Japan, sea come to YOU!"
It still is in bad taste tho. Hope they can work this out.
A good laught never kill.
Wait...
=/ My Japanese sensei was from Mie. I hope she and her family are all right. I'd heard that the rest of the Kansai got very heavy rains as well, which includes my favorite city Kyoto, as well as Osaka and Kobe. I'll need to contact my friends on facebook and check with them.
Hopefully this serves as a lesson to the idiots who got off easy in Irene and think the government overreacted, this was a weaker storm and look at how much damage it did. In any case, I hope the damage isn't as bad as some of these pictures make it look, at least over a wide scale.
Concerning Irene, at least in NYC, the reason there was such a huge response from Mayor Bloomburg and the city government was mainly because of the 2010-2011 Blizzard that happened just after Christmas. The city didn't expect it at all, and it shut down the city for over a week. For NYC to be out of comission for that long is VERY rare. I remember the first few days that MTA buses were just left abandoned in the middle of the streets amongst the piles of snow. It was an oddly beautiful sight to behold.
In NYC at least, the response by Bloomburg was more or less making up for the fiasco that was the Blizzard. And even though by the time it hit NYC it was downgraded to a Tropical Storm, the response taken by the city government was the right one, even though it seemed a little overzealous at the time. Sure, NYC got off very light, but the response was the right one.
What I though was truly ridiculous was the reaction of a lot of New Yorkers to Irene. Before it was about to hit, it was still considered a category 1, and people were acting like it was the end of the world. Not only that, but people were buying more Beer than Water. The city government taking the precautions it did wasn't ridiculous. People acting like headless chickens in Supermarkets and buying more booze than water was (although I will admit that the beer over water thing was pretty damn funny).
lol that sure is a long post
I thought there was a bit over-reaction to Irene just b/c I'm from NC. We've been through hurricanes before (I've been through the eye of at least 3) and I saw nothing that made Irene stand out. It was nothing new to us. It's unfair to compare the situation to Japan b/c Japan is an island nation. There's considerably more threats to them than there is with us. I understand what you're saying though and I'm also glad that the government did prepare.
What?! Actual news here? On SanCom?!
Someone please shoot me. I must be dreaming.
Boom Headshot!
With the Headshot power of a DeadShot Daiquiri
There's actually a lot of actual news on SanCom, it just only comes once in a while.
THIS IS THE WRATH OF THE LOLI GOD
Quick! We need a geofront to hikikomorinize mankind from mother nature!! 2015 and third impact is coming!!! XDXD
I thought the death of one man (or two) was a tragedy.
Interesting enough, a rather big series of tropical winds and heavy rainfall was also responsible for "cleaning up" radioactively contaminated regions in Japan after WW2. I wonder how it plays out this time. Fukushima is still far from save and it could still get worse, seeing that the region is on high alert.
Hectopascals? Now where did my handy pascals to millibars conversion chart go?
I thought in the first sentence it said" tales of landfall", and hoped for a new game. Talas is a cool name fora typhoon tho
#6 Oh my god, japan's been wiped off the map!
Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Tonados, More Earthquakes, then Hurricanes and to top it all off, Cyclones. Are these natural disasters just coincidence or all signs leading to..... The End of The World!!! Think carefully now.
Really bad to hear that. I hope not many victim on this one.
Japan is going to sink, come to Australia!
This is sad news. I hope I get to travel to japan before it's gone. Every day it seems like it getting drowned... by something... I love Japan, but its slowly turning into NeoTokyo from Akira... I hope it never comes to that, but with the weather and the person they have in power killing the anime and manga industry, it seems like Japan is falling down a slippery slope...
Please get thru this Japan!
Oh damn, this is even bad as Hurricane Irene. I hope people over there are OK. :(
Bad year for Japan.
Japan just can't catch a break.

Wow. Pretty much renders all those lines marking the flooding water levels useless, for this flood's exceeded all possible estimated flooding levels.
SINKING OF JAPAN!
I'm starting to believe that movie...
they should go to Indonesia
and learn how to deal with flood
inb4 ishihara says it's another divine punishment because they don't have enough bans
poor japan cant get a break.. but then again we gettin hit with hurricanes over here!! i r in nyc irene bitch slaped me lol
Espero que esos ñoños sepan nadar.
Oh man...this is like Manila back in 2009 when the Typhoon Ketsana hit the Philippines...I hope no one got seriously hurt and/or died.
You didn't read the article, did you?
It's like watching Evangelion.
