Wife Kills Self, Husband with 2.5m Deep Beach Pitfall Trap

a-grave-for-two.jpg

A young woman who accidentally killed herself and her husband by digging a 2.5m deep pitfall trap in the sand is currently the subject of tragic ridicule throughout Japan.

The incident transpired on an Ishikawa prefecture beach, when a 23-year-old woman resolved to “surprise” her 23-year-old husband with a pitfall trap.

Together with “four or five” male friends, she spent the afternoon digging out a 2.5m deep and 2.4m wide hole in the sand using shovels, which she then covered with a sheet, which was further disguised with more sand.

She then waited until nightfall and invited her husband out onto the beach, accompanying him to the site of trap.

As planned, both fell into the trap, but it promptly fell in around them and proved impossible to escape.

Nearby friends heard their screams and called in the fire brigade, but by the time they had rescued them from the hole several hours had elapsed and both showed no signs of life.

The couple were taken to hospital, only to be pronounced dead on arrival. They are thought to have suffocated in the sand.

According to other beach-goers, the group digging the huge hole were warned that they should fill in the hole and go home as it was dangerous, but they only acknowledged the warning and continued their undertaking anyway.

Police are considering pressing charges of involuntary manslaughter against the surviving group.

Such is the awesome stupidity of their deaths that there is even some speculation that there may have been more sinister motives afoot, although there are also those who merely see them as strong Darwin award contenders (2010 was nearly won by the Korean wheelchair vs elevator man).

Plural? Unless you mean the man should receive a darwin award for marrying such a dumb bitch.

Actually I think that there is rule that disqualifies her due to taking somebody else with her.

The 2010 winners were a pair who decided to have sex in a car in the middle of a foggy highway, so I'm not sure how consistently any such rule is applied.

The highway quickie couple in 2010 qualified because it was consensual sex, meaning they both knew exactly what they were doing.

With this pitfall case, I'm pretty sure she would be disqualified as she took someone "innocent" with her. Her husband had no clue of the pitfall since it was supposed to be a prank. For the wife she died because of her stupidity whereas for the husband it was a complete accident.

Now, for the obligatory sexist joke:

He must have known she's dumb. After all, her rightful place is only the kitchen. He's only dumb for taking her outside that kitchen, lol.

This is not the first that I have heard of this sort of trap. Does it even need to be asked what that type of trap what meant to do? It did exactly what it was meant to do. Yes, it was most likely murder. The question then is whether or not the woman had indeed set the trap and if she had intended to go down with her husband. It is also possible that they were both murdered by her friends.

Or more likely, she just thought it would be funny/romantic, and didn't realize that beach sand caves in quite easily, and is difficult to escape from. If it was meant as murder, her and her friends wouldn't have dug the hole throughout the day in direct view of lots of other people.

People dig holes like this at the beach all the time. There was a teenager in California who was digging a tunnel in the sand and had it cave in on him just a few weeks back. In that incident, a lot of other beach-goers immediately pitched in to help, and managed to get to him in about half an hour...
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2022375/Teen-survives-buried-alive-beach-30-MINUTES-tunnel-built-sand-caved-in.html

This has happened to others as well, many of which haven't been as fortunate. Needless to say, digging a deep hole in beach sand isn't a good idea.

It IS possible to be crushed by that amount of sand on top of you, so suffocation isn't the only way out...

Average Asian height is 5'8"++. That hole was 8'++, even deeper than their height.

Weight of sand isn't much of a problem because they would only be supporting the sand directly above them and not the sand from entire hole(if they fell standing, they'd only be supporting the sand on their heads and shoulders). Otherwise, all of us would be carrying the weight of all of Earth's atmosphere.

It's rather a combination of suffocation and inability to move. Think about it; nothing but sand all over your body, and you're so smothered with sand that you can't move.

Nearby friends heard their screams and called in the fire brigade, but by the time they had rescued them from the hole several hours had elapsed and both showed no signs of life.

im thinking that the friends just need 5 minutes to dig the SAND on their own, so why fire brigade...?

At 2.5 m deep, it would be dangerous for them, but you gotta wonder if any of them had ever seen the Princess Bride they would have tried to get a rope.

I'm just going to assume that the article doesn't talk about what they tried to do to help, or that the friends who did the digging had already left and the sand became too dangerous to work with.

As much as people should have tried to get them out, if they fell in horizontally and the sand poured in with any decent speed before the screams were responded to, there wasn't much anyone could do.

Even if they were mostly upright, the pressure of the sand on their torsos could have been enough to asphyxiate them.

Eh, I don't see why everyone is so hard on her. People are always using hindsight to sound intelligent, but at the end of the day it was just some people trying to have fun. People do this kind of thing all the time. Sure this time was tragic, but you guys act like we should never do anything remotely fun or dangerous. I hope they don't charge the other people. It's a common prank.

I think it just happens. People severely underestimate the dangers of the beach such as sand caving in, some quicksand effect on wet beaches, rip tides, jellyfish, sunburn, bacterial infections, etc etc.

People should really ought to try to have more respect for nature.

I actually have made a pitfall trap with some friends in the past, but it was in the woods and it wasn't that deep (and ended hilariously, not tragically). A little more research would've done this woman some good. Still, that's hindsight, like you said. This was just an innocent prank gone wrong.
