This show is...iunno. In some ways it's a cliche storm, but there are some things that are different. For instance, at the end of this episode she (spoiler) tells him she doesn't want to be just friends, which is unusually forward for this kind of show, especially with 4-5 episodes left in the season. It's unusually sweet for this kind of show, I guess, at least the interaction between Subaru and Chicken-dude. Kanade's also fairly interesting, but the other girls you could cut and paste from a dozen other harem shows and not know the difference.
Also, they're all really cute, especially Subaru. I wonder how they're going to weasel out of how this episode ended.
One is his sister, another is a yaoi fan who is hell bent on slashing Jirou and Konoe together (without realizing that Konoe is actually a girl). Suzutsuki is just a top grade sadist (troll). That leaves Usami and Konoe, and Konoe is several leagues ahead.
If they end it half-arsed, there will be a volley of rotten tomatoes.
Mm, I'm a big (huge massive unmatched) fan of tsunderes, but I'm not going to deny that Usami's pretty generic as those go. They work better when they're the main heroine since the plot follows them defrosting, whereas with someone like Usami it's just something that happens on the side that gives her an excuse to beat up Jirou. She is cute though, and I especially dig the twin tails and zettai ryouiki with white boots. She'd be my choice after Konoe.
As far as Kanade, she at least seems like a sadist, but she's really just a tease, and not in an overly malicious way, more a fun pretty harmless kind of way. The difference between teasing someone you like and someone posting on a forum that everyone who reads it is a fag, I'd say. Konoe's definitely the most interesting and developed character though.
I would like a more committal ending, but that's hoping for too much from a series like this. Like OreImo, the damned title gives away how it would end if it wasn't a half assed ending, but fans of the side characters RAGE when the indecisive protagonists they supposedly hate actually decide on someone.
I love this show and can't wait to see it in DVD with hopefully much more detail and even less steam. And what a surprise she confessed to him!

Or Konoe could flat out tell Jirou that she loves him, wants to be his girlfriend, and break the mold of the previous 100's of harem-type animes,

In general harem anime never ends with a specific girl, because with it closed the series for another season..(Toradora was an exception)

No, the novels have yet to declare a winner and if they haven't said anything, we obviously won't be getting a deciding end. (But at this point the author is just stretching out and dragging along the LN story because he wants to mooch of it some more.) I would gladly post spoilers but there will undoubtedly be people who will rage at me for doing so.

Please post spoilers. I'm not too great with reading Japanese so I don't do too many light novels it took me so much effort to read a couple of the OreImo novels...I'd have a much better time of it if real life came with a Rikaichan plugin.

All screwy obsessed comments aside, the last comment in the ep are very encouraging as to the direction of the show.
And as usual, you get a lot of laughs, but people there really isn't anything overt to see hehe. That's not been the focus of this show. You will need something else if you need nipples.
I havn't read the original source yet, but yeah an actual show that (oh-mah-gawsh) DARES pair a couple together at the (pfft) risk of pissing fans off for their preferred coupling is always a plus in my book.
In that same vein, the last episode of Baka to test showed the possibility of an official couple was also a nice plus, but this being THAT show I bet u it'll go back to square one after the next episode :(..
