A female teacher has been charged with sexually penetrating a 15-year-old schoolgirl under her tutelage.
The 38-year-old teacher taught geography at a secondary school in the English town of Colchester, where she struck up an eight month consensual sexual relationship with a 15-year-old female pupil during 2005 and 2006.
In July, 2011, she was arrested and charged with two counts of sexually touching a child under 16, one count of indecent assault by penetration and a further count of sexual activity with a child under 16 whilst in a position of trust.
She tearfully admitted the charges in court. Her defence is requesting she not be sent to prison, but the judge has not ruled out a custodial sentence; she has been released on bail and almost certainly faces the end of her teaching career and has already resigned from her latest teaching position.
In England the age of consent is 16, although until 2000 the age of consent was 18 for homosexual encounters. However, for sex involving a “position of trust” (i.e. a teacher and pupil) the age of consent is 18.
The relatively sympathetic treatment she has received has been compared unfavourably with the child rapist pariah status generally meted out to male offenders in similar cases in the UK…
