China Pirates Aircraft Carrier

The launch of China’s first aircraft carrier has been marred by accusations that it has pirated much of technology used in the ship, with Russia in particular said to be livid at the shameless copying of its aircraft designs.
The carrier itself, just launched by China in order to complete sea trials, was originally a Soviet-built aircraft carrier sold to China by the Ukraine in 1998, known as the Varyag and not yet formally renamed by China.
According to naval experts, the ship is little more than a hodgepodge of technologies pirated from foreign “partners” in much the same way as China obtained its high speed rail system, bolted onto the mouldering Ukrainian hulk purchased in 1998.
Its radar system is said to be a “clear copy” of the Russian Fregat radar system, its close-in weapon system is, according to Chinese media, “based on a Dutch design,” one of its missile systems “closely resembles” a US-German design, whilst its optical landing system is said to be very similar to systems used on US carriers.
Most controversially, the Shenyang J-15 planes intended for use on the carrier are illegal copies of Russian Sukhoi Su-33s, a fact which has incensed Russia, particularly after China began hawking its clones to the very nations Russia has been attempting to sell the originals to.
However, nations whom China is intent on menacing with its new fleet probably need not be too worried just yet – one expert wryly comments that “as with their high speed rail system, they’ve just made rushed copies of a bunch of foreign technology, so there is the possibility of all kinds of future trouble.”

It is a relatively old design and it was not built by China. It was constructed in the 1980s for the navy of the USSR, but was never completed. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the rusting hull of the Varyag sat in dockyards in Ukraine."
I do not explicitly understand what does 'pirated' mean. But clearly this aircraft carrier is bought from Russia. So how is buying a laptop the same as 'pirating' the laptop?
Aircraft on that old Russian carrier are either bought from Russia, or built in China on Russian license.

It's called sensationalism. It's working great for Artefact. Thanks to that, it further proves ignorants/racists/sexists/hypocrites easily flock to places where they can make themselves feel better by hating on some other.
The people here don't care about real news. People are here just for gossip more than anything else and there have been plenty users defending that they're here for "entertainment" rather than accurate news. "Ignorance is bliss" couldn't have been used better than now to describe the majority here. Though there are a few individuals here who at least has enough intelligence not to believe everything they read on this site or any other site for that matter I assume.
What Artefact does is no different than your Fox News, CNN or BBC. What differentiates the lot is it's audience. But what the audience do have in similarites in general is simple. Pure and utter ignorance. They all go into a moral panic at the flip of a switch (which can easily be seen on a daily basis on this site from the comments).
The problem is they're peddling the design as their own, when all of the parts are based off of the designs of other countries.
If they acknowledged that it used those parts it would get suck a bad reaction, but the Chinese govt. only ever states that any of their products were "designed and produced by the Chinese" to attempt to circumvent intellectual property laws so they don't have to pay the REAL part designers a portion of the profits like they legally have to.
You're overgeneralizing though, Russia is plenty mad at China for reverse engineering shopped tech and building it's own copies of much of the technology in it's indigenous arms industry.
It is well known among aviation enthusiasts that the Chinese military aircraft are mostly of Russia/Soviet origin. Chinese do modify aircraft types a lot, and they have some original designs too.
Take MiG-19/Shenyang F-6 as example:that fighter aircraft reached it`s full potential and highest quality(!)first after years of work by Chinese refining it`s design. Yes, it is old story, but proves China can produce quality too.
I don`t know details of this carrier issue yet.

That carrier is not a threat to US Navy, though. Not for Japanese either.
It's purchased from Ukraine, not Russia, same as all associated technology and su-33 bps. Russia's sore only because Ukraine took their business.
And yes, all those sales are perfectly legal. In addition, Ukraine explicitly sold the right to reproduce all hardware. It's a sensible move, after the old stockpile depleted, since they can't produce any more to sell anyway. The "piracy" issue existed only in Artefact's head.
When the USSR fell apart, state property were given to whatever country that they happen to be physically located in. Ukraine ended up with large amount of military hardware that they can't afford to support. Obviously Russians built them, but they did so on someone else's land. Sucks for them, life's not fair.
It's not just China and India buying existing technology instead of going through costly r&d. Europeans have also since scaled down their own r&d efforts post cold war. No reason to reinvent the wheel when it already exist.
US is the only country those days still spending huge amount of money on developing new military hardware, thanks to the military-industrial complex. The rest of the world sees it as a resource drain, and instead opt to obtain new hardware through the most cost-effective way possible.
Yes, you are correct, but most now Ukraine military aircraft projects started when Soviet Union still existed.
The laptop casing is made in Taiwan, every other technology in the laptop is Simmonized from other countries and claimed to be self-developed. All they did could be adding a coding line to each technology so it explodes brighter and that would have fit the criteria of development on an old design.
It means they looked at the design and made their own copy of it without buying it or getting approval. Much like the bullet train that just crashed, the lakeside tourist town they're building, and just about anything else that comes out of China.
Did you know China has a train that is faster than the bullet train that crashed? It's pitiful that some people use Sankaku as their news site.

Really people talk about them being ahead in the space race but they have yet to actually get a probe to Mars ,their crewed vehicle only seats 3, and their rocket uses hundreds of tons of toxic propellants.
If you are not in a country on the ITAR banned list you can literally go buy a better rocket and spacecraft off the shelf in the US.
As for how this carrier will meet it's demise don't think it'll crack in two as the hull it's self is probably still sound but the insides are cheap and shoddy.
So I expect it'll either loose power while in a storm and get grounded on a reef or be lost to fire when a fighter botches a landing or the missile defense system malfunctions.

Do your homework. In WW2 they run by fuel. Nuclear reactor come out later. Only a few can manage to have nuclear reactor. It's a double edge weapon though. Not so many could afford nuclear reactor carrier.
Majority of US navy carriers run on diesel, and even the nuclear ones are built in the 60s-70s. They're much older than that chinese carrier. The hulls are still good, you just have to keep the electronics updated.

They don't just go 'big boom' if they go critical, old technology yes they'll cause an explosion eventually if not cooled but not an actual nuclear bomb explosion.
Newer nuclear reactors like Thorium or molten salt based (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorium) are already being chosen as replacement, what's hedious is how some huge accident had to happen in order for nations around the world start taking actions.
