More like too chock full of shock value and depression, bad pacing and character development, boring, one-sided fights, and entertainment value purely from analyzing every little detail that pops on the screen.

Before episode 3: This is such, boring, generic Mahou Shoujo crap!

After episode 3: THIS IS THE BEST ANIME EVER!

    Being dark =/= good.

Madoka stood around and cried for eleven episodes, then saved the world just by standing there and wishing it. She died for the despair of Meguca and no one else.

Its effect is directly proportional to the number of magical girl shows you've seen. If you haven't seen any, it would just be a weird dark show, since it's a deconstruction.

The beauty of it lies in seeing that tired old archetype fall flat on its face when a bit of decent real-world logic is applied to it - magical powers bestowed for nothing? Heroes always win? feh - everything has a price.

Being dark != good, but not getting it != not good

I don't think that's exactly true. I know people (one person actually) who hates the magical genre and loved Madoka. The only experience I had with any magical show was probably just Nanoha. Though I do know some of the archetypes...

    *Is 13:44*
I've seen plenty of magical girl animes, and that's why I dislike Madoka so much. By the tenth episode I was ready to scream "We get it! Being a magical girl isn't a good thing." Better pacing, more breathers from the shock value would have made it more bearable.

Madoka is a show that runs on emotions, not logic. These girls are highly irrational and it's no wonder Kyubey takes advantage of them. For example.

How the heck does Sayaka come out of seeing Mami get devoured with a smile? "Oh let's just not talk about that." But then when she finds out she's a zombie, suddenly she's too depressed to live, just because she "can't hug Kamijou with this body."

Kyouko going from wanting to kill Sayaka to being willing to die for her can be blamed on the short amount of episodes.

And if the timelines on PMMM's wiki are anything to be believed, Homura went through absolute HELL for a girl she met one month ago. They didn't even bother to explain what happened to her parents.

Speaking of parents, in any other magical girl anime, Madoka's mom letting her go off into danger would work, since they usually know about their child's secret by the finale. In this case Madoka's still an ordinary girl and her mom knows it. /rant.

    @ Imyou

Gotta disagree with you on that real world logic part.

    Soul gems.
    Darkness within them.
It can't be used by them, but it can regenerate the witches.
    No one questions this.

In most magical girl shows, the girls are either born with magic in their destiny (Sailor Moon/Precure) or roped into it unwillingly (Pretty Sammy/Cardcaptor) But in this case the Meguca have every opportunity to refuse the contract. There's no imminent threat that hasn't been happening for centuries. No real villain.

And no, the heroes don't always win. They just live on the more idealistic side of the world, while Madoka drowns in the cynical side.

As far as pacing goes it`s really good and manages to tell a complicated story in 12 episodes. What kind of breathers are you talking about? Useless beach episodes?

Emotions are the best! Anyway they`re kinda 14 you can`t expect them to be able to think through and have reason to suspect that QB is hiding something.

Well Sayaka loses it because she doesn`t have a point in fighting anymore. She`s unable to live with the love of her life and who she made the wish for. Mami`s death also had a big impact on her to, it`s not like she ignored. It caused her to be distrusting to other magical girls and try to do the right thing all the time.

I`m not exactly sure if Kyouko really did want Sayaka dead in the first place.

You can say that about a lot of characters in anime. Homura looked up to Madoka in that timeline, she was her only friend. She doesn`t have anything else so it wouldn`t be completely ridiculous if she when through all that.

Most of the possible plot holes are from what`s not told. Though it`s not really a big deal since it manages to tell it`s story pretty well.

    Lastly it`s because Madoka`s a badass.

@ Homu Homu breathers like... an episode that doesn't involve some terrible thing happening and making the girls suffer. A little lighter mood to ease away from the constant barrage of dark and depressing. By the 8th episode it got so stale that I wondered why I should even keep watching, way I should care if they're all doomed anyway.

Her only friend? I seem to remember Homura being saved by TWO Megucas. Poor Mami can't get a break.

As for Madoka herself. Stopping a mass suicide is cool and all but she didn't do anything else for the whole of nine episodes. Then in the eleventh she suddenly grows a backbone and saves the world just by wishing. In any other magical girl anime the final battle is a struggle, all their love and determination comes and fills them with at least most of the power they need. In this case Madoka already had the power, it's just a matter of how to use it without screwing the universe over.

You all make me lol. The real reason Madoka is enjoyed is because it wasn't an overdone plot line. It took Mahou Shoujo, tore out what traditional aspects it had (yes, sickeningly cute characters, good always win (likely through friendship), no one really gets hurt in the end...). It took all of these and said.. to hell with them, lets make something NEW in *this genre*. And so they did... and did a rather epic job with it.

Now you can say that there are other animes that had similar dark stories, yes. Complete originality is almost impossible these days; however, in regards to the MAHOU SHOUJO genre this is entirely unique. It would be like in your typical harem anime the guy growing balls in the third episode and not playing all of the girls...

Yes, there are always going to be some kind of plot holes in anime... in anything really. Look at what they consider "academic literature"... there are so many holes in it that its almost see through.. It's what allows people to either put themselves in that position or allows them to be creative and think their own alternate ideas.

I will also state one other thing. Even in episode 1 there were a plethora of things that separated this from any other Mahou Shoujo anime:
    A) Madoka still had both parents... in what would be considered reversed roles even.
    B) Madoka (the supposed primary character) didn't become a mahou shoujo in the FIRST episode.
    C) Instead of instantly being like.. I want to help this furbal... I'm going to think about it...
    D) The FREKEN ART... no happy go lucky pretty bright colors...

The anime was all about being different from others in it's genre.. it succeeded.

There will always be haters. Some people just don't care for the genre... don't care for anime with plot... require more moe and pantsu... or just hate it because its popular. Just go on hating... as I see it, the haters increase the popularity of a show as well =D

    @ SunnyJ

See that's the thing, a lot of people only know Mahou Shoujo from the butchered dub of Sailor Moon, so they don't realize Madoka being dark is nothing original. The only difference is that Madoka tries way too hard.

Tragic deaths? No one gets hurt? Heroes always win? Look at Minky Momo. Not only did she fail, but she ended up getting hit by a truck and dying.

Tsubomi of Heartcatch Precure and Sasami of Pretty Sammy had two parents as well.

Maybe helping the furball is a bit of a stretch, since she thoughtlessly protected a potentially violent animal from Homura. She didn't even wonder what it was or why it could talk. Madoka's also been said to be very much willing to help others without a thought to herself.

The only difference now is that the term "Mahou Shoujo" is suddenly a fate worse than death, so anyone who knows the risks would be understandably hesitant. Plus her life was plenty fulfilled already so she didn't really want to make a wish.

One Piece has in Japan 9% to 12% of viewers each week. For an anime that has being there so long it's amazing (I still prefer the mabga version.).
Bleach and Naruto have only 3% each... What's why they aren't in the list.
