In an age where the role of children in anime is often limited to servicing the needs of fans of “disturbingly sexualised young girls,” single father anime Usagi Drop seems to have triumphantly bucked the trend – fans cannot stop praising it, with many commenting that it has awakened their own paternal instincts.
Some scenes from the anime:
The online reaction says it all:
“Usagi Drop is so good.”
“Best anime this season.”
“It has won the season.”
“It’s even better than Tiger & Bunny and Ano Hana.”
“Rin-chan is just too cute!”
“It feels good to watch it before you go to bed.”
“You lot really love Usagi Drop, don’t you? This year we seem to be seeing a lot of realistic drama anime…”
“It really stirs your paternal instincts. It really stirred mine.”
“I kept crying like never before at times. I thought I wasn’t a lolicon, but it seems I am. It really stirred some kind of protective instinct.”
“That’s not lolicon, it’s paternity!”
“This anime will open the eyes of lolicon to their fatherly instincts. It may help correct their thinking.”
“The protagonist tends to invite comparisons to yourself, if you are near that age.”
“This anime really makes you think about your attitude to work and family.”
“It’ll lower the birth rate even further after people see how impossible raising a kid is.”
“It’s OK. Parents and children grow together.”
“When I watch this, I feel something has awakened inside me… orz”
“That’s what we call maternal or paternal love.”
Usagi drop is great, but I think only people in their late twenties and on can appreciate it – young punks in school aren’t going to like it, it’s too bound up with children.”
“I want a daughter.”
“I too want a daughter, although not a wife.”
“Looking at this thread it seems it enjoys a lot of popularity amongst old men and women in their thirties. The way it depicts children as both childish and cute is certainly skilful.”
“I’m a single in male in his thirties. I can’t stand it! It’s awakened my paternal instincts!”
“It’s fun and cute, everyday but heart-warming. A great work I’m happy to have met.”

Usagi Drop is awesome show! Director, please don't go into Rin's older age stuff. That's when UD became crappy! Keep it in Elementary School.
srsly, i'm going to be so annoyed if they animate into the shoujoshit years and the disappointing ending.
I want the ending you're not wanting. >:C
Director, do it.
What was the ending?
Well,SPOILER ALERT: Girl grows up, falls in love with the guy taking care of her.
Read manga "Bunny drops"
Oh really... yeah nobody saw that coming....
MEGASPOILERALERT
Wincest (only they aren't blood related, did you really think the old guy could get it up?)
Not in komodo no jinkan...
ahah prepare to be disappointed!
Awesome show it is.
Another case of growing up = becoming crappy? Just like with StrikerS, it seems that these time-skip things are hard to do right...
Well, you know
teenagers.
how dare you say that about strikerS
you are right ^Y^
It's a poor comparison, since Nanoha's aging process in the series is:
9->15->19->25->Gundam lol
Well, not that the timeskip is bad, but not everyone was happy about the unexpected ending.
its only good because rin is such a good kid imo but nonetheless its a damn good show
Thanks for the spoiler asshole.
This is why anime fans are idiots..
While manga readers are far better than them.
This is why you don't talk trash about anime in general, it still doesn't make you look any better.
Don't feed it, 18:58.
I don't really see the spoiler in this. We just know she's gonna get older and it's gonna suck when she does. Big deal.
But is pointless if it doesn't finish the entire manga and only section of it. The only thing left is either an open ending(which might resume someday) or alternate ending.
Too late I see a hag coming up in future episodes!
HAG TRANSFORMATION, GO!
best anime show I have seen come out in a while, big thumbs up
Been awhile I've seen such a touching show.
Best shit to watch before going to bed, indeed....
yeah its good. i read the manga too and i know the ending. If it ends like the manga there might be some trouble^^
Lol. True.
yeah this show is awesome...
definitely one of the top summer anime together with Croisee, Dantalion and Memochou
The show is awesome ndeed,... unfortunately real children are not like that in real life.
This is the irony that makes raising real kids problematic for potential parents.
Getting through the "baby" years is enough to make most parents insane.
oh yeah, i don't have children myself, but my cousin has an 11yo girl and my niece is 8yo.
sometimes they are cute, but most of the time they are just annoying.
but you have to endure the bad times to treasure the good times.
Well, i think it's just a thing of luck (with the genes). My parents said my 2 siblings were chaos on earth, but when i came along, they didn't have to worry at all, myth has it i was quiet, and only spoke when i had something interesting to say, i would listen quietly and i helped everytime i could. Sadly, things change when one grows up.
And then there's still the risk of your kid becoming a druggie, alcoholic or a smoker at the age of 14, no matter how much care you put into raising him.
Sad stuff. All my primary school and junior high classmates are either alcoholics or smokers or both, EVEN the girls. Don't get me started on high school, me and some dude noone liked were pretty much the only two who didn't smoke and the only two who knew when to stop drinking. Others just drank until they covered the floor with puke and passed out.
It's the growing up environment that make them change.
A parent's maximum influence on a child is absolute. A bad parent breeds 'bad' children; a good parent breeds 'good' children. There's no risk.
People have a tendency to misunderstand pretty much everything, including how to be a 'good' parent. They make enormous mistakes without noticing it, and when confronted about it they might say "I wasn't wrong" "People aren't perfect" or "I have my own life you know" or some other worthless bullshit. A parent has the obligation to give their life to their child, and this includes getting educated on EVERYTHING that can be seen as relevant.
Being a good parent takes much more intelligence, wisdom and willpower than what most people of all ages have. I trust the dreaded "environment" MUCH more than any parent---in very lucky cases, the environment is THE good parent.
Nope! They change because they want to change too. You can be a good parent and do all sorts of good things and your kids can come out rotten as hell still!
indeed this anime is great and as i said before Daikichii should get the "Man of the year" award but dont get too carried away he just like Tomoya got it "easy" picking her up after the "baby phaze"...
...anyway I want a daughter too
given that there's not enough babies being born in japan, this might just reverse that, with all the people wanting daughters now.
I came
Lots of anime nowadays that concentrate on having legitimate loli heroines this past year. Maybe it's the perfect storm of a lot of novels and manga following some pattern.
This show has the best paternal/maternal aspect I've seen in anime since Hanamaru Youchien.
But in the end Rin want to pregnant with Daikichi's child.
go away, troll.
Your funny...
No it's true. Read the ending of the manga. =__=
he's right,he aint trolling here.Rin DID want to bear a child with Daikichi.read the manga,chapter 56.
Rin is Daichiki's aunt (his grandfather's daughter and his mom's sister)
No, he's not... read the manga you tards.
Rin was adopted, what means that isn't incest.
The funny thing is that she became "Kawachi Rin" in the end
I agree this show is awesome I read the manga so I knew it was something I wanted to watch this season right off the bat
I had just about given up on this whole season of anime, until Usagi Drop came along! Definitely a keeper!!
