Visitors to the summer 2011 Wonder Festival hoping to see some sexy cosplay maidens seem to have got rather more of an eyeful than they banked on…
However, the event was not entirely taken over by dollers, and did see some quite sexy cosplay:

The kigurumi cosplayer in the yellow swimsuit is definitely a girl, can tell by proportions.

Actually, I was there and saw them without the masks, they were real girls, I assure you. The sentai ones, at least.

I'd wager 10:1 most (60%) were male.
Yeah, trannys are pretty god damn fucking common in a lot of asian places...
But yeah, it's an event to showcase models and the like. Isn't so weird that they use masks "I guess"..

I actually think Comic Con has shown that westerners do cosplay REALLY good nowadays. Maybe better than many of these conventions where we normally thought were always the masters of cosplay:

It's been proven in the past that some cosplayers are paid by publishers.
Though that's not to say they are bad.
Yes, but it's not likely they paid for THOUSANDS of good cosplayers.
Yeah! SankakuCon should be paying more attention to some western events... Some, not all of them...
I think part of it is that while Wonfest is a reasonably large event, Comic-Con is much larger and attracts a more diverse audience, and thus attracts more good cosplayers. Tokyo Wonder Festival has an attendance of around 40,000 vistors, while San Diego Comic-Con sees around 130,000.
The type of people visiting the events probably has a lot to do with it as well. Wonfest is primarily an event where figures are sold, so most attendees are likely going to be figure-collecting otaku. Comic-Con undoubtedly attracts it's share of similar types, but has branched out from comics to cover things like movies, videogames and animation, which appeal to a much wider audience.
I'm sure there are hired cosplayers as well, but that should only account for a relatively small portion of them.
When Cosplay I prefer Natural over 2D and that's my final answer. As long as they look beautiful, there will be no complaints.
