A major accident on China’s much trumpeted new high speed rail system has prompted the inevitable “China quality” denunciations online.

The train derailed crossing a bridge, with two carriages falling off the bridge into the river below. Rail authorities claim a “lightning strike” was responsible, causing a train to lose power on the bridge, only to be smashed into by another train approaching from behind.

Initial reports indicate at least 11 fatalities and 89 injured; each carriage had a capacity of 100.

China has been accused of flagrantly pirating Japan’s Shinkansen, even going so far as to sell the copies overseas, and the father of its high speed rail program has been arrested for massive corruption – all facts which have resulted in massive schadenfreude in Japan, although there is some disappointment that no explosions were involved:

“It’s here!”

“China quality, as ever…”

“Independently developed.”

“Do some inspections!”

“There were no earthquakes or anything and it still derailed?”

“That was quick.”

“Weren’t they supposed to be more advanced than Japanese trains?”

“I hope there are no fatalities.” [casualty figures were not yet released]

“If there was anyone on that train you can bank on there being dozens dead.”

“From Japanese TV:”

china-bullet-train-accident-006.jpg”She’s half smiling…”

“So it derailed before it could explode.”

“What kind of track are they using…”

“Will they sue Kawasaki and JR East for damages?”

“This is a huge accident, isn’t it?”

“This is horrible.”

“They’re selling this stuff overseas?”

“Honestly, I didn’t expect something this bad.”

“Has one exploded yet?”

“China isn’t really ready for high speed rail.”

“There is no way China is going to be able to maintain these systems safely.”

“This is the beta version. The Chinese can count themselves lucky the bugs are being caught early on.”

“Was there a problem with the bridge?”

“If there was you really can’t laugh about this…”

“High speed rail is too much for China at this time.”

“You can’t just copy trains like that – they’re missing the ability to manage and maintain the system.”

“The Japanese ones have never derailed except in one major earthquake and the only fatality the system ever experienced was from someone getting trapped in a door.”

“Maybe the rails exploded and threw the train off the tracks?”

“Nobody is going to buy their trains after seeing this.”

“It was one of these:”

china-bullet-train-accident-007.jpg”It could not have derailed in a worse possible place.”

“This is a major accident!”

“My prayers are with the departed. They died for political reasons, and even Japan has TEPCO so you can’t laugh about something like this.”

“I expect they are going to try and cover this up and minimise it.”

“Well, it hasn’t exploded yet so they are doing well, for China.”

“We can only pray that not too many people perished. Rest in peace…”

For many Chinese, a lightning strike equals to a divine punishment, right? Anyway, accidents happen everywhere in the world, even in Germany, UK, US etc. where safety measures are so much higher than in China, even without lighting and thunder. In general these kind of accidents happened due to human negligence; people make mistakes, not only in China, it's everywhere.

Yeah. Like the A/Cs on German highspeed trains failing as soon as it actually gets hot outside (gasp!). You can't open the windows on the new ones anymore, so there actually were some fatalities from people basically stewing into heat death last summer.

That one's due to Railway companies being capitalist and not spending their money where it needs to be spent.

China quality indeed. There aren't any way to inform other trains that one train stopped? No central management system in place, to see them?

Heck not even a simple, battery-powered radio to inform other trains that they've stopped, and if you're on the same line, you better stop as well?

As always, Epic Fail. Made in China.

They did report that the train was struck by lightning ya know. You can't really have magnetism on the track if it took thousands of watts of electricity and the connection could have also short-circuited making unusable. You know,it's not a good idea to make fun of the dead even if you hate there race. If you can't feel at least a little bit of empathy for the victims of the crash, you will be better off being a heartless murderer.

This has more to do with extreme bad luck in combination with poor safety measures rather than quality of the trains, besides trains have been hit by lightning in other countries (e.g. UK or USA); as always these kinds of accident happened because people were being careless, nothing more and nothing less.

Why do the replies to my comment not really related to what I've just said?

"They did report that the train was struck by lightning ya know."

You mean the state media reported the train involved in the accident getting struck by lightning. What I meant is that the other (second) train who collided with the immobilized train should have gotten information about the stationary train immediately after it (the first train getting struck by lightning and forced to stop) happened to avoid the collision in the first place.

"You can't really have magnetism on the track if it took thousands of watts of electricity and the connection could have also short-circuited making unusable."

Another irrelevant point, all I said is some simple measures would have avoided this from happening (talking about the collision obviously) in the first place.

"You know,it's not a good idea to make fun of the dead even if you hate there (sic) race."

Uh, yeah. So criticizing their lack of measures to avoid such events in the first place is "making fun of the dead" now?

"If you can't feel at least a little bit of empathy for the victims of the crash, you will be better off being a heartless murderer."

Uh, yeah. So criticizing their lack of measures to avoid such events in the first place means I "can't feel at least a little bit of empathy" and I'd be "better off being a heartless murderer" now?

There were two train involved, first train stop due to power lost by lighning strike. Second train hit the first train from behide at speed cause this accident. poor communication, safety, and management. Something like this would never happens in other countries when their priorty is about keeping people safe.

Eh, I am sure there are quite major accidents with trains too here in the west with superior safety rules. I also hear about the lightning hitting the first train which cause it to stop while the second one hit the first train from behind. This has nothing to do with the quality of the trains itself, more with unfortune/bad luck. And the people who made jokes about this incident/accident, go to hell, people have died here, even when they are Chinese they are still people like you and me!

    Comment by Anonymous

Yes, I'm sure it was struck by lightning. Just like I'm sure the North Korean women's team were struck by lightning and just happened to test positive for illegal substances "due to the lightning strike". It's not like china has a reputation for poor quality and north korea has a reputation for doing anything and everything to promote nationalism including cheating. Nothing to see here folks. Dude, you might as well have just admitted that you're from China. I've never seen anyone in these comments make a racist comment about Chinese people, and the comment you're referring to certainly didn't either. This is a political/social problem in China, not a inherent problem with the Chinese race. So I've said it many times before, and I think its never been more fitting or true then now, EPIC - CHINA - FAIL.

That is indeed weird. Normally, with segment signals in place, and with them decently spaced, the following train conductor should have had time to brake.

But nowadays, I guess traffic could get tight either near stations or on bridges with few lanes.

Keep in mind a highspeed train needs more than a mile to come to a halt. Possibly several.
