I like the fanservice, but this show seems like the wrong one for it to be so blatant. The plot's nothing special--to put it another way, it's something Kuroneko would like, an overly complicated "dark" series that really isn't dark at all--but the fanservice weird for that goal. If they could implant the service on this show into something like BakaTest or something more focused on comedy, I think everyone would be happier. Or at least, we'd get less of the whining complaints about the show being dumbed down somehow.
Or I'll put it another way: if you have a problem with the way the anime is written, taking out the fanservice wouldn't make the writing automatically better. It does, however, attract people who wouldn't normally watch this show, for instance me.
If you say Kuroneko would watch this, it must be better than whatever Kirino would watch.

Apart from the hair, I can't say this show is particularly original. I've probably seen this plot a dozen times. But I don't care--this show is like cheap beer, trashy but still quite enjoyable.

Japan is no longer producing plot and action oriented anime series of the quality that was produced 5~10 years ago. Nothing comparable with Cowboy Bebop, GitS:SAC, or Last Exile was produced in 2010~2011.
