Japan has beaten the USA for the first time ever in the final match of the Women’s World Cup, prompting the usual sudden and opportunistic interest in football amongst Japanese supporters.
The match was drawn 2-2, but Japan’s team turned this into a 3-1 victory when it came to penalties.
Japanese media helpfully offered gloating coverage of Americans witnessing their defeat:
Japan’s team had previously been remarkable for their total inability to beat the US – they previously lost 22 matches and drew a further 3, making this their first victory against them.

Japan humiliates the USA in a german Arena.
That's Godly
one loss out of 23 games is humiliating? it seems to me, the fact that it took 23 games to win one is the humiliating part. anyway it was a victory well earned. congratulations japan.
Reminds me of a story I heard. In 1970, after Germany eliminated Great Britain in the quarter finals of the World Cup. The German and UK ambassadors met at some social function. The German ambassador was bragging to his English counterpart how they had defeated them at their "national sport".
To which the the English ambassador replied "Yes and we have defeated you twice at yours!".
With all due respect, Britain didn't defeat Germany in WW2 at all. The US and USSR did, calling France and the UK "victorious powers" is an insult to the efforts and sacrifices the former two made in order to secure allied victory. (and yes I'm German)
I really don't know what you're going on about.
The meeting took place over 40 years ago between 2 ambassadors at a social function.
It wasn't a history lesson but a bit of verbal sparring between two individuals about a sporting event.
1970 was a different world. The USSR was the "evil empire" and Germany a divided nation.
You really need to lighten up Herr Anonymous.
Also, Stalin did far more to defeat Hitler than any American.
Soccer anime boom incoming.
Road to victory 2011, captain tsubasa female version :))
Just no live-action. These real girls have zero moe, me no like, bad medicine.
.... and let's just hope they won't be shrink headed bowling pins like adult Tsubasa did.
it's like those genderbender-ed pics of Inazuma Eleven
Shoujo soccer anime, mayhaps? One can only hope...
make that loli soccer anime!
lolis playing balls with their feet? hooo
while i agree that lolis make everything better i'm not that much a fan of sports shows
ro-kyu-bu is kinda fun to watch for the colorwars, but otherwise it's rather bland.
i still want my show about lolis working on an oil rig, including too big helmets and working clothes
There are drawings of Tsubasa on the flag :)
Must be their inspiration!
On J-Pop side it has already been futsal-football boom, with girl pop star teams like Gatas Brilhantes of Morning Musume & Hello!Project over 7 years now.
MoMusu former leader Yossie, Yoshizawa Hitomi could well have played star role in this Japan team, if her pop pro contracts had not prevented her participation when her football(real sport, played by feet, not by hands) talent became apparent in 2002.
The writer of this article is clearly American, considering lack of any understanding of this sport.
We in Sweden have great respect for American Women`s Football(stop calling it soccer), despite having beaten USA in group stage, and achieving "only" Bronze medal, 3rd place.
But Germany, Brazil and Norway stayed behind us, all potential World Champions in near future.
I, for one, am as happy for Japan`s victory as if my Sweden had won!!!!!!
And its called football by every other country. Majority rules
football, yay
I don't get it why people call american football football anyway, most of the time they just carry it around with hands, but they can name it whatever they want its their sport, but yes it does annoy me they try in return to rename real football
No, in Japan the kanji say foot ball too.
And Usa had its ass handed by Japan.
that's why they're so well ranked. oh wai-
It's called Soccer by Japan and America, the only two nations on the planet that really matter. So get over it.
moe soccer incoming
they already got basketball covered this season
it's only a matter of time
Remake for Whistle please. =P
Give it up to SC commentators to make everything pedo.
It's a football, not a soccer!
/sp/ was so mad and tsuntsun
before
>haha, we're gonna kick your asses so hard! USA! USA!
after the game
>i-it's not like we wanted it anyway, b-baka
it was glorious
Fuck yeah, Japan!
Actually makes me happy that Brazil lost to USA, Japan winning makes me a lot happier!
You had me for a sec there Sanku~ World Cup won by the Nipponese?! *click*~~~~~~

for women...
.....
weh?
congratulations to japan.looks like their women is strong after all.And lol at the their faces so priceless
I swear, when we lost it felt like the ending to some sports manga. Like...the loser team that NEVER beats us ever....suddenly gets a win on the greatest stage. Guess we didn't realize they had a training arc before they fought us..
Training arc since they were 5 years old. USA team has to select younger players now, they have had same players in 10 years now.
Yeh but if soccer was a sport based on looks and not on skills we all know who would've won.
still they will keep the old ones until they do no more for some reason. just like in Norway.
even when we crunshed all competion under World cahmp. in 87,93 and 95 and when we slam down the gold under the olympics in 2000 (even if we lost a good player half-way there)
and after that? new main trainer. they have changed 3 players since the olympics in 2000. maybe not so strange we havent won after that...
(the strange thing is that when we smashed USA in th olympics, its was lie :'( and then the day after it was over, when they lose to japan its like *RAGE*)
Hopefully this will put more attention towards womens' soccer in Japan. The shocking thing about this win was that a lot of these girls play the sport as a hobby. There isn't a high level of competition of play like there is in America and in many other soccer nations as far as women are concerned. There is still a huge issue of women not being taken seriously in sports and hopefully this will be a catalyst to change.
Also, the level of drama throughout was like watching an episode of Inazuma Eleven. These girls had no right to win on paper and yet they pulled off the impossible.
I know a lot of people absolutely giddy over this as well. Nobody really expected this to happen at all.
I used to think that I could do anything as well as a guy can, but in grade nine I learned the difference in physiology between men and women. Apparently once a guy hits puberty his strength increases threefold whereas a ten year old girl is the same strength as a 20 year old woman.
So a woman bodybuilder could be stronger than a guy, but if compared to a male bodybuilder, than no. Similar to this, when I was watching our Canadian Hockey teams in the Olympics, I noticed a drastic change between male and female. The big difference was the speed at which the guys crossed the ice.
The point of me saying all this is my explanation for why there isn't a focus on the women's football. I used to play football in school until grade 10, and even though our team won almost all of our matches while our guys team lost almost all of their matches, when we played each other after the season's finish, they destroyed us. Same thing in Volleyball, same thing in Basketball. American Football was Co-Ed, but I assume they would have beaten us there as well. So who wants to watch something that isn't as good as another? It'd be like being a fan of the Leafs.
@ Erin Bushay
I agree with you that unless a woman is some steroid enhanced Amazon, there is no way she can phyically compete against males.
However, separate female leagues have been done in Japan before. The manga Tesuwan Girl is I believe is based on fact.
It might not compare to the Japanese Pro Leagues but it's certainly a viable opportunity for women.
That's only if we compare between genders, which would be like pitting a smaller weight boxer to a heavyweight.
I think attitudes will change when women in sports gets way more competitive onto itself.
So far, Golf and Womens' Soccer is highly competitive and very compelling to watch. Other sports may follow, though stuff like Volleyball depends on which kinds of superstar players are playing on the world stage. Then there's the Olympics where stars can come out and shine especially for more niche sports where women can really show off like Gymnastics.
That said, I still want to see a freakishly amazing female baseball player playing in pro leagues or something like that.
No right to win? But who's the coach? You can win soccer with great strategy.
@ Shippoyasha
The only reason that's true in the US is because in 1972 Title IX was added to the 1964 Civil Rights Law. It made it illegal to deny opportunities based on sex.
A byproduct of it was to put girls athletic programs on a somewhat more equal footing as far as funding.
I don't know if there is anything like that in Japan, if it wasn't for that law girls sports in the US would be practically nonexistent.
It was an exciting game. And it's really astonishing how they could pull it off.
You know the game started with Japan getting completely pummeled. They were playing a losing game from the get-go. It was only a matter of time before USA scored first. But JPN pulled off an equaliser. 2:1 no surprises. 2:2! Quite the surprise. And the last minute play almost finished JPN off if it wasn't for the foul just outside the penalty box. That red card saved JPN. Considering the game up to this point, JPN didn't deserve to win the game. xD However luck was on their side.
The penalty shootout on the other hand.. they clearly dominated it.
In the end a well-deserved and exciting win.
I would say America had no right to win. Not before hand, just because after all those opportunities, they still couldn't pull off a decent number of goals. At one point I just said "you know, I just don't think they deserve it anymore"
Strategy is not enough. You need luck for player to play on form (sometime with bad luck, even Rooney can break his leg on a match). Good morale players will play well under pressure such as penalty shoot out. That's why the psychology warfare is very important in game like this.
Not 'no right to win', but like on paper, they were more like semi-pros, not even pros.
It just shows how anemic the womens' sport programs are in Japan. While in America, womens' soccer is gigantic and the competition is crazy. It just makes the victory that much more unlikely. Even in the game, America should have scored 4 or 5 goals. It's crazy.
As for coaching, I hear the Japanese strategy actually backfired. But they just won with perseverance and divine luck with those American girls missing totally open shots.
"And the last minute play almost finished JPN off if it wasn't for the foul just outside the penalty box. That red card saved JPN. Considering the game up to this point, JPN didn't deserve to win the game. xD However luck was on their side."
Don't forget about the bad (close, but on review ultimately bad) offsides call that broke a great chance for the JP to score before the USA team. They didn't have all the luck on their side.
are you a female
"There isn't a high level of competition of play like there is in America and in many other soccer nations as far as women are concerned. "
The FUCK are you talking about, ahahah...... Seriously, people think there's some huge competition/interest for SOCCER in the US!?!?
Most every one of us learned of this story by watching sportscenter wanting to see if the NFL lockout is done yet..
It's true. The vast majority of people in the US don't care about soccer at all. See this article, for example...
http://pewresearch.org/pubs/315/americans-to-rest-of-world-soccer-not-really-our-thing
Aside from those of Hispanic descent (most of which are actually from Mexico), Soccer ranks below such sports as ice skating and tennis among the populace. Maybe it's popular at certain schools in certain areas, but otherwise relatively few people in the US care about it.
Neither the US or Japan can be considered a "soccer nation", which makes it somewhat amusing that they were playing against each other in the World Cup finals.
I can't say about the US but soccer in Japan is extremely popular, is actually the 2nd biggest sport in Japan in both popularity and participation, only loosing to baseball.
Heck, the national league of Japan (J-LEAGUE) is the biggest and the most successful soccer league in whole Asia. And Japan is the country who most win Asian Cup titles (4, the last one in 2011 winning against Australia on Qatar). You can say that, because of baseball, soccer is not the biggest sport there but you absolutely cannot say that they aren't a ''soccer nation''.
You aren't serious, are you? A lot of people take a great interest in soccer in the US - i don't think it's fair to make a generalization like that. :l
Did you skip high school/college or something? Women soccer is really popular amount women. Most American girls know how to play it/went to camp for it.
Japan`s ball passing play is the best ever seen in women`s football, reminding not so little how Barcelona`s men`s team play.
Their individual skill is of very high quality too.
The funny thing is... now they could make a female version of captain tsubasa that would make sense when japan gets to the world cup's finals...
I guess, you haven't seen Nadeshiko Japan mascot. Mascot was drawn by person who made Captain Tsubasa
that´s a great win...but something strange comes to me....the men's team in Japan is obviously more -"beautiful"- than the women's team....wtf is happen @_@ ???
It's a Trap FTW
in japan...that´s always a good answer...
Japan`s men`s team has potential to do the same. But competition is astonishing, over 100 good nations now, with 30 capable to reach semi final stages.
congratulations to japan.looks like their women is strong after all.And lol at their faces so priceless
congratulations to japan.l
US is ranked on the first place in the women football rankings
USA will be First on the Female Rank until the end of this moth when the Ranking will be updated... but they will be second anyway XD
Anon 22:10 with all respect, ManUtd had nothing to do against Barcelona. Japan women`s team have better idea how to play passing game.
maybe I type too fast
u jelly
its womens football... who cares.... and its vs US, us is horrible at football... MANCHESTER UNITED OR GTFO
but who cares about women's sports? lol... the only time you need a woman to do something sporty is make her run to the kitchen, make a sandwich, grab me a beer, and run back in record time.
it must be embarrassing to be male in japan, no wander so many hikimori.
by the way my country won the male world cup, i had nothing to do with it i don't even like football, but i admit i feel now superior to japanese males.
