Japan Wins World Cup

Japan has beaten the USA for the first time ever in the final match of the Women’s World Cup, prompting the usual sudden and opportunistic interest in football amongst Japanese supporters.

The match was drawn 2-2, but Japan’s team turned this into a 3-1 victory when it came to penalties.

Japanese media helpfully offered gloating coverage of Americans witnessing their defeat:

Japan’s team had previously been remarkable for their total inability to beat the US – they previously lost 22 matches and drew a further 3, making this their first victory against them.

The US and Canada. It's called Soccer in Canada, too.

Anyway, the US had many chances, but they let it slip away. Hell, they were lucky to even make it to the World Cup, let alone the final. The American women's team is getting older.

I wonder if Japan's coach gave a speech like Herb Brooks did before the US played the Soviets in the miracle on ice.

"Tonight, WE are the greatest football team in the world. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great women's football team the Americans have. F$#@ 'em. This is YOUR time! Now go out there and take it."

Hopefully this will put more attention towards womens' soccer in Japan. The shocking thing about this win was that a lot of these girls play the sport as a hobby. There isn't a high level of competition of play like there is in America and in many other soccer nations as far as women are concerned. There is still a huge issue of women not being taken seriously in sports and hopefully this will be a catalyst to change.

Also, the level of drama throughout was like watching an episode of Inazuma Eleven. These girls had no right to win on paper and yet they pulled off the impossible.

I know a lot of people absolutely giddy over this as well. Nobody really expected this to happen at all.

Not 'no right to win', but like on paper, they were more like semi-pros, not even pros.

It just shows how anemic the womens' sport programs are in Japan. While in America, womens' soccer is gigantic and the competition is crazy. It just makes the victory that much more unlikely. Even in the game, America should have scored 4 or 5 goals. It's crazy.

As for coaching, I hear the Japanese strategy actually backfired. But they just won with perseverance and divine luck with those American girls missing totally open shots.

Strategy is not enough. You need luck for player to play on form (sometime with bad luck, even Rooney can break his leg on a match). Good morale players will play well under pressure such as penalty shoot out. That's why the psychology warfare is very important in game like this.

It was an exciting game. And it's really astonishing how they could pull it off.
You know the game started with Japan getting completely pummeled. They were playing a losing game from the get-go. It was only a matter of time before USA scored first. But JPN pulled off an equaliser. 2:1 no surprises. 2:2! Quite the surprise. And the last minute play almost finished JPN off if it wasn't for the foul just outside the penalty box. That red card saved JPN. Considering the game up to this point, JPN didn't deserve to win the game. xD However luck was on their side.
The penalty shootout on the other hand.. they clearly dominated it.
In the end a well-deserved and exciting win.

The only reason that's true in the US is because in 1972 Title IX was added to the 1964 Civil Rights Law. It made it illegal to deny opportunities based on sex.

A byproduct of it was to put girls athletic programs on a somewhat more equal footing as far as funding.

I don't know if there is anything like that in Japan, if it wasn't for that law girls sports in the US would be practically nonexistent.

Don't forget about the bad (close, but on review ultimately bad) offsides call that broke a great chance for the JP to score before the USA team. They didn't have all the luck on their side.

I used to think that I could do anything as well as a guy can, but in grade nine I learned the difference in physiology between men and women. Apparently once a guy hits puberty his strength increases threefold whereas a ten year old girl is the same strength as a 20 year old woman.

So a woman bodybuilder could be stronger than a guy, but if compared to a male bodybuilder, than no. Similar to this, when I was watching our Canadian Hockey teams in the Olympics, I noticed a drastic change between male and female. The big difference was the speed at which the guys crossed the ice.

The point of me saying all this is my explanation for why there isn't a focus on the women's football. I used to play football in school until grade 10, and even though our team won almost all of our matches while our guys team lost almost all of their matches, when we played each other after the season's finish, they destroyed us. Same thing in Volleyball, same thing in Basketball. American Football was Co-Ed, but I assume they would have beaten us there as well. So who wants to watch something that isn't as good as another? It'd be like being a fan of the Leafs.

That's only if we compare between genders, which would be like pitting a smaller weight boxer to a heavyweight.

I think attitudes will change when women in sports gets way more competitive onto itself.

So far, Golf and Womens' Soccer is highly competitive and very compelling to watch. Other sports may follow, though stuff like Volleyball depends on which kinds of superstar players are playing on the world stage. Then there's the Olympics where stars can come out and shine especially for more niche sports where women can really show off like Gymnastics.

That said, I still want to see a freakishly amazing female baseball player playing in pro leagues or something like that.

I agree with you that unless a woman is some steroid enhanced Amazon, there is no way she can phyically compete against males.

However, separate female leagues have been done in Japan before. The manga Tesuwan Girl is I believe is based on fact.

It might not compare to the Japanese Pro Leagues but it's certainly a viable opportunity for women.

It's true. The vast majority of people in the US don't care about soccer at all. See this article, for example...
    http://pewresearch.org/pubs/315/americans-to-rest-of-world-soccer-not-really-our-thing

Aside from those of Hispanic descent (most of which are actually from Mexico), Soccer ranks below such sports as ice skating and tennis among the populace. Maybe it's popular at certain schools in certain areas, but otherwise relatively few people in the US care about it.

Neither the US or Japan can be considered a "soccer nation", which makes it somewhat amusing that they were playing against each other in the World Cup finals.

I can't say about the US but soccer in Japan is extremely popular, is actually the 2nd biggest sport in Japan in both popularity and participation, only loosing to baseball.

Heck, the national league of Japan (J-LEAGUE) is the biggest and the most successful soccer league in whole Asia. And Japan is the country who most win Asian Cup titles (4, the last one in 2011 winning against Australia on Qatar). You can say that, because of baseball, soccer is not the biggest sport there but you absolutely cannot say that they aren't a ''soccer nation''.

Yeh but if soccer was a sport based on looks and not on skills we all know who would've won.

still they will keep the old ones until they do no more for some reason. just like in Norway.
even when we crunshed all competion under World cahmp. in 87,93 and 95 and when we slam down the gold under the olympics in 2000 (even if we lost a good player half-way there)

and after that? new main trainer. they have changed 3 players since the olympics in 2000. maybe not so strange we havent won after that...

(the strange thing is that when we smashed USA in th olympics, its was lie :'( and then the day after it was over, when they lose to japan its like *RAGE*)

it must be embarrassing to be male in japan, no wander so many hikimori.
by the way my country won the male world cup, i had nothing to do with it i don't even like football, but i admit i feel now superior to japanese males.
