The characters are on sale as DLC from the 14th onwards, for those still willing to brave PSN.
Aside from the obvious inexplicability of Square Enix’s refusal to produce the most demanded remake in gaming history, some concerns have been voiced about a certain lackingness in poppet Tifa:

Why... did they do this, to one of the best Final Fantasy titles in history? I rather they didn't do a remake if this is the graphics style they are going to adopt... why couldn't they use FF13's awesome graphics on this remake instead of spending all funds on a sequel to a mediocre FF title.

Chrono Trigger, FF Tactics (for PSX), and FFVII were amazing games. Why can't we have something as good as those on current hardware? Why did the latest one make everything into a tunnel where you just kept pressing X? What happened to cool characters, subplots, exploring a big world, doing side quests, or anything like that?
The games were contracted to China (aka FF14) and became the death knoll for Square Enix. You get what you paid for, and the former fans (including myself) can only look with disgust.
