Adapting manga, visual and light novels into anime is a fraught process at the best of times, and some titles have become notorious for making a mess of things – though yet others are simply notorious for having snobbish or obsessive fans who resent new arrivals or so much as the slightest change to the original story.
Anime fans supply a ranking of the original works they most strongly prefer to the anime adaptations.
1. The World Only God Knows
2. Seitokai no Ichizon
3. School Rumble
4. One Piece
5. To Aru Majutsu no Index
6. Haruhi
7. Full Metal Alchemist
8. Slam Dunk
9. Blue Exorcist
10. Hidan no Aria
11. Shakugan no Shana
12. Black Butler
13. K-ON!
14. Gintama
15. Bleach
16. Hitman Reborn
17. Kore wa Zombie Desuka?
18. Natsu no Arashi!

20. Dragon Ball
21. Naruto
22. Majutsushi Orphen

There is of course much scope for liking both anime and original, but still strongly preferring the original…

So obvious, so simple.
I think the only reason they don't is because anime per episode costs waaaay more to produce than a manga chapter. So they alter appearances and some story elements to fit their target demographic better, in order to capitalize profits. In addition some story arcs are to long or to short (even if they are perfect in manga form) to make sense in anime adaption.
Sooner or later more people will have to realize they need to treat anime and manga as two separate beasts; and remember to treat the anime adaption of a manga, or the manga adaption of an anime as 2 separate yet equal stories with no comparison between the two unless they are identical in every respect. Then again the same can be said of books and movies, as they often vary greatly from one another, and yet everyone still complains that the book is better.
Say it like it is, Kyon!
LIKE A BOSS
use "yare yare" please! XDD
Haruhi does that
*facepalm XD*
Yes! that's it! now just shake your head while doing a facepalm. :)
Plus if it sucks you can just blame the original.(Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei reference anyone?)
Another ranking by someone random. I bet Tsukihime would be a baka gaijin mention. "There was a Tsukihime anime?"
Nah, there's certainly no Tsukihime anime
There is Tsukihime anime.
What's it called?
Shingetsutan Tsukihime
Not surprised to see some of these anime's I know on this list.
Inappropriate image, Steins;Gate isn't even on there D:
Who cares? Cristina is the perfect Tsundere XD
I see you're new here, Sankaku-kun and misleading go hand-in-hand.
But that pic doesn't even make sense... the pic of Kurisu with cat ears in the shows animation is far superior to the VN animated one... Don't get it...
he do it on purpose
School Rumble needed a proper 3rd season, not those crappy rushed OVAs.
Gintama? I thought that was universally considered a better anime than manga?
Well at least these got to keep their original story. Try BlackCat, everything from character design to story is changed. t(^.^t)
And its 1 of my favourite manga too..
How can K-On be on the list? Each chapter was only something like 8 panels long. It'd be like being pissed off at a Charlie Brown episode based off of 1 peanuts strip, obviously something has to change or it'd only be 45 seconds long.
They might be referring to fan service, or the lack thereof in the anime.
Yep, let's not forget the missing Mio's shimapan scene...
Because the anime turned K-ON! from a simple story about some mildy cute, simply-drawn girls who play music into food for lolicons and anyone afflicted with moe madness. IMHO. Just tweak the art and add to the cuteness factor and you have an anime.
You don't have to do anything to schoolgirls to turn them into food for lolicons.
lately everthing is turned into moeblobs. sigh
objection!
Also the manga designs were cuter... the anime character designs ... ugh... their spines and hands...
Most people have something about adaptations. Even when the original is complete shit, and an adaptation is way better, people always say. "But the original is better!", hipster bullshit wtf.
In my opinion, adding color, music, voices, animation, etc instantly makes it better, unless it jumps ship from the source material or has a filler ending
Someone doesn't understand the power of comics.
I won't deny that manga is a pretty powerful medium (even its lack of coloring tends to showcase how artists could do wonders using nothing but ink and screentones), but adapting to an anime really does pretty much bring it to life. Keep in mind, film is arguably the ultimate artform since it manages to combine several schools of artistry, be it drawing, writing, acting, music composing, as well as the method of mixing and arranging of all of these in itself. In a lot of ways, animation is the ideal method for portraying a storyline since it shows the flow of time, the atmosphere, etc. in ways that still images could never accomplish. It's all the better with anime since, as opposed to movies (often only two hours long) adapting novels, it could get away with a long running-time depending on the episode count, and thus it is capable of following its source material word for word.
But of course, several anime don't go this route, and just end up ruining what could have been a great thing. I'm certain this is where most of the criticism towards adaptations in general comes from, though sometimes, you do just have simple elitists. I'm guessing they're mostly literary enthusiasts who like to trump the "power of imagination", and think that anything with a voice added (or in the case of most non-light novels, faces to their characters) is automatically tarnished because it conflicts with what the reader itself could've envisioned. Though, personally, I call bullshit on all this "imagination" crap (I can come up with plenty of creative ideas, but any time I read a novel, I rather despise the visuals as they come up in my head... they also tend to abuse purple prose, which paints the visual at an even slower pace than it needs to be and ultimately does nothing but piss me off).
I've seen many anime and it's no lie that these anime studios change things for no good reason, add fillers especially when they are not needed and drag things out, not to mention half-way to the quarter of the end of these animes, always have anime original filler endings that make no sense and are always rushed.
These studious only have an intent to make a quick buck, they're now into making only 11-13 episode animes (which isn't necessarily bad). Otherwise you get the standard one season and if by some miracle you'll get one more season, till they ruin it with a crap ending. You won't be getting a third season and they will not animate the whole manga it's based on.
Only a few get that treatment e.g. one piece, naruto, bleach, fairy tail etc. and maybe toriko, as long as they don't f up with that one.(They already created a filler main character that was never shown in the manga and has no importance to the story whatsoever.)
I also hate those irrational ppl who just like the original over anything as well though, there was this one comedy movie made in britain and it was remaked in the US.. it just had different actors but it was exactly the same word for word.. and they were still bitching about it smh
SO you get the point.
well, I do think complaints against remaking British comedies and such is pretty justified. Really, when you consider that they're already speaking English in the original (albeit with a particular dialect), recasting it to seem "more American" just seems pointless, if not downright xenophobic (I'd partially blame the American demographic; they seem to be kinda spoiled and expect ALL of their entertainment to be made in the image of their culture and their culture alone, and it's a shame because most corporations would prefer to feed this glutton rather than take some risks like putting more emphasis on subtitled foreign media, which should be very cheap to produce since they'd only have to deal with localizing it).
Once again an idiotic list which makes no sense.
not even my grocery list makes any sense
It's rather frustrating that the list doesn't indicate *what* the fans tended to dislike about these adaptations and why.
Art style? Story Changes? Casting choices? Direction? Something else?
Without that sort of detail, the list just ends up being a confusing bunch of names.
Way to troll with that Steins;Gate image considering it's not even on the list.
again this list sucks, a lot of my favorite animes are here. but considering Madoka is the only thing worth of praising, according to Otakus, I guess is no surprise.
Madoka is not on the list also because it's an original production not based off some existing manga or light novel.
He didn't say that Madoka should be on the list. He said they only praise Madoka and hate everything else.
I'm surprised to see there's no Chaos;Head.
I'm surprised there is no Zero No Tsukaima. Then again, the Light Novels are also lame.
Btw, Record of Lodoss War? That's a surprise.
I'm more surprised that the two Negima tv anime aren't on here. The current OADs are wonderful adaptions but the two tv anime were terrible adaptions (though, I'll admit that I liked Negima!? despite all the changes).
I'm surprised that "fans" can barely go back a season or two for their "Top/Most X" lists, but somehow can go back over a decade for Lodoss. (I'm assuming they mean the TV series and not the 2-decade-old OVAs)
I'm surprised to see there's no Fate/Stay Night
It should be there, the anime is definitely inferior to the VN. Though admittedly the Fate route is the weakest anyway.
theres neither fsn nor tsukihime or claymore, but lodoss made it... funky
Claymore was a solid adaptation, if you ignore the ending.
Freezing while an amusing series (well I enjoyed it anyway), wasn't exactly faithful to the manga either.
Skipped and re-arranged certain events which lessened the overall impact that it could've had. Thought that was a bit of a shame.
Yozakura Quartet, Dance in the Vampire Bund, Air Gear
all those goes astray and killed the original(and they thought an OVA can save it...)
Yeah what up with that
A Subliminal message by Artefact perhaps?
I assumed Steins gate picture is there because it is an example of a big change, but it is still just as good, just in a different way.
The visual game is in XBox!
Should have been very hard to make a perfect adaptation for the game, BTW, i prefer some character on the anime over the game(like Daru who looks more realistic). S;G is in my Top5 anime :)
I saw the picture and was like "Oh. That's probably going to be in the top 3 of the list."
Artefact is always deceiving us.
Or finished airing...
Mahou Sensei Negima too, that anime crashed, but the manga is still going fine
