A ranking of the top new anime of 2011 so far already yields a surprising turnabout – after a tearful ending and doubtless thanks in no small part to the extreme popularity of Anal, the magical puellae have been ousted from their formerly secure top spot.

I am with you, I am going to have to disagree with the order of pretty much all of this.
Aria is mediocre at best. The only reason I see it so high is because of the Taiga+Ryuuji VAs.

Steins:Gate on the other other hand, I haven't had a negative moment so far, I like all the characters and it has made me laugh +bonus points.

so true. it was one of the few animes I've seen with actual literary merit. not surprised by the rank it got though, since, I mean really, no one gives a shit about social commentary having to do with profound questions like the value of the present vs the future & vice versa in society's major institutions..
C was FUN, which is more than I can say for most of the popular anime out there. But it wasn't popular, so people tried to actually analyze it, instead of just having fun with it.

The beginning was excellent. As a whole, it's still good compared to most other current anime.

Sounds like most popular anime to me. But this one was actually moving, and didn't try to pretend it was something it wasn't.
Because it deserves to be dumped on for doing what every other anime this year has done, amirite? Seriously, if Madoka wasn't full of forced drama it wouldn't be on this list.
