The live action adaptation of the popular tale of bakumatsu ronin Rurouni Kenshin has been officially confirmed, with actor Takeru Sato cast as in the titular role of Himura Kenshin.
The series originally ran in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1994 until 1999, and proved to be a major hit with sales of 50 million over 28 volumes, soon being adapted into a long-running anime series. The franchise’s highpoint was doubtless the generally excellent series of animated movies this in turn spawned.
The live action movie, the first in the franchise, will be directed by Otomo Keishi and produced by Warner Brothers Japan.
The decision to pick Takeru Sato for the lead role was lauded by the original mangaka Watsuki Nobuhiro (who reports that at the start of the project when he asked his wife who would be best for the role, the first name to pass her lips was that of Takeru Sato), hopefully suggesting the movie will meet a better fate than the majority of anime-to-live-action adaptations.
The movie is expected to be released in 2012.

Oh God! Please don't fuck this up!
"Battousia the Manslayer" means too much to so many of us.
EXACTLY, they're going to ruin one of my childhood heroes!
omg
Not enough to get his name right, it seems.
Whoohoo~!!
Den-O becomes Himura Kenshin~!!!

I can vouch for the actor. He does really great job at doing Kamen Rider. Possibly one of the best Kamen Rider actors in the last 5 years.
I don't understand this hate. So he doesn't have naturally red hair and he doesn't have gigantic anime eyes. Even in Kenshin, none of those characters really looked asian anyway.
@ Shippoyasha
I don't think it's hate, it's just that your taking one of the great anime icons and turning it into a live action movie.
Live action results have been, shall we say mixed in the past. I know the Japanese might be more sensitive to the subject matter than hollywood but still.....
Even though Takero Sato's a good actor it's not him alone, if the production values are cheesy it will be a disaster, no matter how competent he is.
Does he actually have ANY martial arts training? Because his profile says he likes playing with cats, breakdancing, and solving a rubik's cube.
Wow, martial arts not listed. And he's portraying one of the greatest swordsmen of all time. SOMEHOW I think he's not qualified.
Can't they at least find a boy that did KENDO or IAIDO or at least weapons with shaolin to portray the acrobatics of Kenshin's syle?
*sigh*
I guess it was too much to ask for a real warrior.
I wasn't questioning the merits of his skills in martial arts, I was simply saying they shouldn't be an issue. What matters is his acting skills, and from what I could gather, they seem up to par for the role.
As an aside, I saw a comment mentioning Joe Odagiri. I can't speak for the role he played on Kamen Rider as I never saw that, but he was great in Bright Future.
Not a valid argument, Tom Cruise is a professional stuntman as well as an actor. Anyone can train to learn how to use a sword. But comparing Cruise's background to Sato in that sense would be wrong.
Non issue, you know thats what doubles are for, and for the more fantastical stuff there is cgi (sadly) i dont see any other way for some of the more outlandish moments in the series sure is no dragon ball but still...
Apparently, you are unaware that actors merely pretend to be a character.
He didn't seem extremely martial arts trained, but he did swing swords and do some stunts while he was under possession from the demons in the Kamen Rider story. He's definitely not some total newbie if that's what you're asking.
Does it matter if he's had previous training? Tom Cruise seemed to do just fine in The Last Samurai after all. Granted this is Kenshin, but I really don't think it's a huge deal. If the guy can act well enough to be convincing in the role, that should be all that matters.
What about Joe Odagiri? He's also a Kamen Rider too,but i would love to see him whether a villain or whatever..
"Possibly one of the best Kamen Rider actors in the last 5 years."
For one series he already played various roles and personalities.
He truly is amazing in that he had to change his personality like 4 or 5 times depending on which Imagin monster possessed him and he did a great job of acting out each personality.
As for Kenshin having red hair in a movie... at that point, may as well make it animated..
I don't believe he got shit acting. As much as I know, he might be one of the better.
But it just doesn't feel the same if he doesn't have super long red hair with ponytail. That's kinda the way I remember Kenshin. :V
Well, as long as they don't go DB Revolution route, I'll say ok, go on.
turd sammich
And there's our 2nd troll!

Yeah! Ore Sanjou!!
Henshin! [Reverse Sword Form]
wait till Decade uses the Final Form Ride card on him to turn him into Hitokiri Batousai
Instant rejection if he can't perfectly say "Oro?".
Question is who will play Hajime Saitou?
They better do a good job of choreographing the sword play or this will fail miserably.
Rurouni Kenshin's trademark as the one of the top swordmen of the period is at stake!
I hope its at least as good as the saber duel between younger Obi Wan & the young Darth Vader. That was epic, there hasn't been a saber or sword fight as good in any movie action scene before or since.
^_^
Fuck this shit movie!
lol I don't think this movie is coming to the states. If it was they would have casted a white guy so don't worry.
red hair, blue eyes = azn, duh.
or maybe even african
no perhaps armenians could pull it off too
lol azns
And we have our 1st troll! Now plz remove the name "Madarame" you do it no justice.
Too bad he's not trolling. People still pissed from having Gantz slaughtered.
Cautiously excited!
He will do, as long as they give him an awesome red wig.
Even if they don't look much alike if the movie is really good it won't matter at all, they better have a huge budget for this film otherwise they will only dirty the anime!... ^_^
The response from Watsuki Nobuhiro is considerably much, much more positive than that of Toriyama Akira with the DB live action movie (whose initial reaction can be summed up as "WTF!?"), so this Kenshin adaptation should hopefully get off to a good start.
Now to see who will play Sano, Saito and Shishio.
we need a trailer to see what it looks like
Pretty boys without any acting skills - The Movie! #4642
Oh joyous of days <3 Nogami gets picked as Kenshin.
OOOOOOOHHHHHH SHHHHHHITTTTTT! RYOUTARO!!!!!!!!
Is Momotaros gonna make a guest appearance?
A lot of people are mistaking kenshin for a manly character. Within both the anime and manga, while kenshin was amazingly strong he was described as as pretty boy with a thin body build that made him similar to that of a girl. This is why in the manga it states that Kenshin could no longer perform the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu as he got older because it put too much stress on his body.
O think Takeru Sato will do an excellent job of Kenshin, though he just needs to grow his hair out and possibly start taken kendo, iao lessons.
i hope it doesn't suck -crosses fingers-
...I guess I we heard is "Oro~" tone voice in Den-O
He better breakdance in this movie.
This better be fucking amazing. If it isn't (which there's a good chance of) I hope they get hit by a bunch of destructive water of the bad nature.
It's going to be the best live-action version of an anime since Hell Girl.
It's the dude from the Fit's Gum commercials!!
