The fact the Berserk didn't make the list is highly disappointing.... maybe everyone has forgotten about it already :-(
Seconded.
Guts' sword was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this list, as I just started rewatching the series the other day.
Its absence is HIGHLY conspicuous. Was it maybe omitted for not having a proper name?
Because the best I could come up with is 'that fuck-off huge chunk of sharp metal which Guts uses to split people like firewood'.
Maybe Guts' sword was omitted because it was simply too big, too thick, too heavy and too rough to be called a sword. It's still the best huge piece of iron that's swung around though.
I lol'd. They said that like fifty times in the manga. XD
Still a ridiculously awesome manga, though. =)
i think the sword was called dragon slayer or something along the lines, its been a long time since i last reread the old chapters
The first thing to cross my mind is a lack of Berserk on this list. Incidentally, Guts' sword is named "Dragon Slayer."
berserk and katanagatari isn't on this list... this is just sad >_>
actually, on the full list, two of the Katanagatari swords made it, and they're both in a three-way tie for 35th place along with something from the series Garo. The two swords in question are Zokutou Yoroi (the suit of armor) and Entou Juu (Enmonzaemon's guns). Still, there were 12 (well, 13 really) named swords in that series, and most of them were pretty badass (arguably, a lot of them shouldn't even be considered swords, but the series gave some pretty decent reasoning behind their titles), so it's a fucking shame that only those two make it AND they can't place any higher. Hell, why not combine all the Deviant Blades together into one enormously badass entry? The Zanpakutou from Bleach managed to get away with it (for those scant few unfamiliar with Bleach, "Zanpakutou" is just the classification of swords that almost everyone in the series uses, and every last one of them has their own unique name and special properties).
true dat.
Not sure if anyone have said this, but maybe it's becasue Guts is a muscular barbaric white person.
I'm pretty sure it's called "The Dragonslayer"
Its called the dragon slayer in hte manga
i thought it was called "Dragon Slayer"?
I always thought it was named "Dragon Slayer"
People are too burnt out and fed up that the Berserk mangaka is a card carrying Idolmaster fanatic and is too preoccupied to consistently continue the manga. Also, with Idolmaster 2, I bet he won't care about the manga for years to come...
I think Berserk is up there with the greats, but it still hurts that the story might not finish at this rate since the mangaka clearly wants to do something more lighthearted now.
Especially the special commission art he did in recent years of cute magical girls, I can tell he isn't really up for all these crazy stories of dark demons and ogres raping people that much. Yeah, it's still one of the standouts of the genre, but at this point I'm much more of a fan of Claymore with that style of hyper violent fantasies. At least Claymore release are more consistent (even if it's like on a once per month basis sometimes).
And HouseLife, I don't think it really hurts to try. The manga is over 30 volumes though, so it can be intimidating. I'm mostly worried that the mangaka doesn't want to finish the story.
@ HouseLife
You're really doing yourself a disservice by not reading it.
As his artwork got progressively better and more detailed you begin to see the inspiration of Hieronymous Bosch. Absolutely fantstic the amount of effort he puts into his work.
Deny yourself no longer and give in to the dark!
P.S.
The stories pretty good too! ;)
@ Shippoyasha
I don't think he's given up on Berserk but I think he's having a hard time trying to come up with a solution for Casca.Possibly using Idolmaster as a diversion to clear his head.
I would imagine writers block wouldn't be out of the question after 20+ years.
I know a lot of fans complain about how the story's been going downhill since the "Golden Age Arc" but that arc was like capturing lightening in a bottle. It would be impossible for any mangaka to match or better it with each successive story.
As Kuraudo mentioned, Beserk is still the best of it's kind and I remain hopefully optimistic.
Anyone would get burnt out if they drew such ridiculously detailed artwork almost nonstop for a couple decades. I mean, look at the recent chapters. Look at the rigging and planks on those ships! Holy shit, it looks REAL!
Please? Don't say that? With a cherry on top? I'll love you forever -_- Let me pretend that he's at home brooding as he draws intricate detail into the story just a bit longer...
I love happy endings in good stories personally. Nowhere is it written that a dark story can't remain dark while allowing some very choice happy moments through. If Idolmaster does that to him, so be it, but either way, I just sincerely hope he hasn't lost perspective on his own works. I haven't even read the Berserk manga at all, because I'm too scared to start and never be able to finish. *knock on wood*
None of this changes the fact that Berserk is already the best of it's kind - even if the creator decides not to continue the manga, we have a story that has no analogue in any other media.
This ranking just goes to further show how the Japanese have no concept of the merits of their own culture :(
wasn't it dragon slayer or something along those lines?
if not i can see it not being on the list because than there are FAR better swords than the ones named.
I agree with the dozen or so people that have already said this; Gatts's Dragonslayer should be on that list. Same with the swords out of Katanagatari.
That, or the list should be renamed more aptly to "Top 10 Most Popular Anime That Happen to Feature a Sword" and display those.
Maybe Guts' can't technically count as a sword I guess???
i agree on the Berserker sword, but also what about the double edge sword?
i feel it was one of the best sword out there.
Epic Fail, Sankaku
Im surprised that the gun sword from ga-rei is not on the list. It shoots blanks but is insta draw from scabbard and can slice at full force with a flick of the wrist in a totally different direction.
List or no list, it sure is fun swinging that slab of metal around in the Dreamcast and PS2 games.
I logged in just to agree.
I didn't forget! i'm watching that anime again Blue Ray ripped XD so bad ass!
Acualy it makes sence that Guts' sword didnt make the list. It isnt a "special" sword with a name or anything. Its just a plain ordinary, damn big sword.
Also, didnt he go through like 4 swords?
Its called Dragonslayer and actually its exceptional sword not only because its huge, but also because it became chenged by influence of Guts curse and by the countless demons and ghosts he killed by it.
As other people mentioned the huge slab of metal he uses now is called Dragonslayer because it was made with the intentions of slaying a dragon. As for the swords he went through, that's mainly cause they were all flimsy, he did kinda cut off a guy and his horse's head...
Guts' sword does have a name (Dragonslayer) and it is special. IIRC it's gotten special powers because of all the demons it's killed (it was able to hit that one emperor that could turn into mist and it will probably develope more powers as the series progresses).
Guts sword was called dragonslayer and it wasn't "plain ordinary" as you said but since you look like you haven't read manga yet so i wont spoil it for you.
I havent read the mana. But the sword that Guts uses in the anime never had a name, or at least they never said it. This list isnt for swords in manga, its for swords in anime. And in the Berserk anime, it was just a big peice of metal. The one in the anime, he never used to kill any demons.
Unless your talking about the sword that he uses in only the very first episode, but even then nothing was said about it.
Its not so much Guts sword specificly thats important. Its whatever is in his hands that hes useing to smite his foes.
gut's sword by far should be number one... period
guts sword is penis compensation sword , nothing more .
There is a doujin where the Dragon Slayer is the one between Gut's legs.
what about the pants covering my sword?
If anyone dares to say "what about the sword between my pants?"
I'll scream -_-
Yeah the anime is so old it isnt the first thing that comes to mind anymore. The movies will certianly help, cant wait for those! And fore sure and easy #1, especially with all the different variations he has throughout the series.
that sword is just plain ugly!!
that sword is just a fail copy from cloud strife's bastard sword, with fewer design value!!
Critical research failure. Berserk started in '90, with a prologue that showed off Guts' gigantic blade. FF7 was released in '97. If anything, the Buster Sword is a Dragon Slayer ripoff, not the other way around.
Claymore > that huge ass useless sword. Dragon slayer my ass, I doubt that sword as well as its owner can stand a chance against the Smiling Goddess Teresa
anon 15:38
wasn't there a rule about not feeding trolls?
berserk came before FF7. Shut the fuck up you stupid scrub.
Who cares about the above. I'm more disappointed they didn't even mention Grand Master Rave, now Haru's sword was one of coolest because if you put a different pendent it changes it's material type. Now that's my #1.
Claymore swords are common in Claymore world and also they are completely normal pieces of iron shaped like swords. Dragonslayer got an aura of death and shifted to another plane of existence during manga. Its not only a huge sword anymore. Its capable of killing even a god hand. It was shown in manga when Gattsu attacked Ganishkas clound body.
I agree with anon 18:44 :(
I agree. At this point, Claymore swords are way more iconic than any Berserk sword. Claymores use their sword as a mark of their identity, their life. It just means way more in a kind of a samurai-sword kind of way. Very cool.
I didnt and still cant believe somobody made a list of famous anime sword without Dragonslayer.
Don't worry, they will remember when the movies start coming out.
It remains off the list of "Anime series you want to see continued" every time that list is repeated like School Rumble and many other great older series.
The fact that this list has crap like dog days in the source proves the short term memory with these lists..
