    I guess they'll get points for trying something new. But there's a problem... the male protagonist is always necessary. It's a balancing factor. I personally couldn't really get in touch with Sasameki Koto, even though it was a lesbian-based story, without a male protagonist of some sort. Even just a friend there who shows up occasionally.

    In this case, this is like Dragon Age. I HATE male main characters who are a stale, emotionless face with just text. It worked in the SNES and PS1 eras because we recognized the limitations. In a dating sim game, it makes sense in the first person perspective, but this is ridiculous.

    Plus... did anyone consider that people are basically fapping to these things? I honestly don't see reading as a benefit to the whole scenario. In doujinshi it's the medium and how it works. This is animated and supposed to be assembled to draw a story to the next level. This is... taking that and going backwards.

    Dumb idea. And I hope the Japanese don't do something stupid... like think it's a good idea. This reeks of an accounting idea to save pennies on voice acting costs...

    Hm... For ecchi Anime, Manga and Doujin, I don't care for the male protagonist at all. However, I have always thought that instead of trying to 'immerse oneself', the idea was to be an observer.

    The idea of the faceless and personality-devoid male is usually to just place emphasis on the female character as that is supposed to be the focus of the ecchi scenes.

    ...but yeah, I completely agree with the fact that having no voice in an ecchi Anime is kinda annoying.

    Facelessness is one thing, but by taking out the voice, I think it goes one step too far. If anything, it takes you even further out of the scene.

    You're right, observer is the right word. It's obvious you're not the one in the scenario, and that's part of the amusing nature of it. Apparently there are JAVs you can get where it's just a woman looking at a camera doing suggestive motions. Some may find benefit in that but... it'd just be awkward, I can't see how that would be worth much.

    No, you're right, Gordon Freeman is a tremendously well-made protagonist and is mute, but he's a first-person scenario again. And they have great writers who understand how to write that into the scenario. All the characters react to the events and react to Gordon, and when they ask you a question, one of the cool things is it's like your answer is to move.

    It's a scenario that's limited to first-person perspectives. In Chrono Trigger, one of my favorites, it was kind of the same. It wasn't first person, and worked due to graphical limitations, but the characters all reacted, and at the very least, Crono had his own personality in his nods and such. Dragon Age you seemed to do nothing. Even if the there was a text answer, it was almost annoying that they showed my character's face at all. I'm hearing Dragon Age 2 follows Mass Effect's style, which is in every way better, regardless of what Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation says :D

    I was never, ever a fan of the movement to allow you to put your name as a character's name. It's stupid. It doesn't add anything, it takes away. Try it with a book, it'd be ridiculous.

    Hell no. Yuri anime does not need a male protagonist, and most of them thankfully removed such a character (remember, yuri anime is not aimed at men alone, the audience is half women or more). He'd be worthless for everyone but a small minority of possible watchers, anyway - and these are missing the point of lesbian-themed stories to begin with.

    If you cannot emphasize with a female main character, you really DO have some issues. Most people manage to do so just fine. Just like I manage to identify with male characters in yaoi as well as female characters in yuri.

    You're right, however, that for hetero-themed stuff, making the guy invisible is cheap and just done to save money.

    So, I half agree and half disagree. Het stuff should of course have a fully detailed and characterized(!) male character. However, saying that yuri does need such a character is batshit insane. Animes like Nanoha or Sono Hanabira are great exactly because they get rid of such a character. You can see it in Nanoha really well: Nobody gave a damn about the guy, so he was phased out. GOOD move. We need variance, stories with characters of both genders, and stories which are focussed on one gender. That way, you get your (crazy) way in some cases, and everyone else gets their way, too.
