“What Do You Think of Nail Art?”

nail-art-001.jpg

The noted affection Japanese women have for “nail art,” and the complete disgust with which most men apparently view it, has lately been exciting opinions online.

The question was prompted by a woman dining with her “nailist” (the Japanese term for beauticians specialising in such manicures) friend, who had black nails. An old man dining nearby apparently asked her if she was having liver problems.

This prompted her to pose a question to men online – “A question to men. What do you think of female nail art?”

It may be helpful to provide some examples for those unfamilar with the practice:

Aya Hirano is a devotee and provides much regular updates on the state of her claws:

Even the questioner admitted she expected a negative response, and she was not disappointed:

“Women who don’t do it are far superior. If my girlfriend did it I’d definitely get her to stop. I can’t imagine they can even keep their homes clean. Nail art is a fashion minus.”

“It’s unhygienic, they surely can’t do housework, and it makes me think they aren’t interested in doing anything. I can’t see any positive aspect.”

She seems intent on ignoring these criticisms however:

“Certainly excessive nail art would look as if it’d prevent you working, but I feel fellow women who leave their nails in ‘nude colour’ without even painting them are negligent.

If I’m exchanging business cards with another woman, if they have nice nail art and I have none, I feel strangely embarrassed, and the nail art can also serve as a conversation starter. so there are other aspects.

Nail art is an expression of a woman’s desire to be pretty. I think men should be more understanding of it.”

The matter soon passed to 2ch under the title of “Woman: ‘I’m trying hard with my nail art but I’m still not popular with men!’ Men: ‘Natural nails are best’ Woman: ‘Impossible. Men are incomprehensible.'”

Predictably, 2ch (and most probably men in general) is all but unanimous in loathing the hideous talons and their grotesquely tasteless patina of encrustations:

“Gross.”

“They look like witches.”

“Nail art is something women do to please themselves. There is no man who likes it.”

“Keeping your nails pristine is all well and good, but encrusting them like that is just creepy.”

“Painting them is OK, but I wish they’d stop gluing beads and stuff on to them like some horrible insect’s eggs.”

“Looking at those horrible talons festooned with decorations just makes me want to tear them off.”

“If she lets you do her who cares what she does.”

“What about having a woman with nails like that give you a handjob though…”

“That lot can’t wash their hands properly, it’s unhygienic for sure.”

“Why do they do this?”

“Please tell me they don’t try to cook like that.”

“It’s like a brightly coloured poisonous frog. It’s bright colouration is a warning not to eat it. They are signalling to us not to go near them as they are poisonous, so let’s not.”

“Those nails make we want to puke. Could never marry a woman like that.”

“It’s not for men. It’s just something to let them quarrel over who is cutest amongst themselves.”

“Why are men and women’s ideals so different now.”

“If there’s a hole the nails hardly matter.”

“It’s just something for them to show off to other women and feel smug about.”

“It doesn’t deserve the ‘art’ appellation.”

“If she’s cute I can overlook it.”

“Who looks at their nails?”

“They can’t so much as open a can, bottle or even onanise… it’s like having a disability.”

“Having long nails is gross in the first place.”

“If my lovely Mio had nail art I’d drop her.”

“Women’s ideal: a bitch with brown curly hair, fake talons, scantily clad and bedecked with accessories.

Men’s ideal: A natural belle with long straight black hair, no makeup.”

“Brown hair and nail art cost a fortune and consume huge amounts of time. Men hate them and the only one who benefits is the beautician industry. Idiot women need to give it some thought.”

“If they ever have kids they’ll stop so as not to harm them due to maternal instincts, so don’t worry. Or so my wife says.”

“If men started doing art on their penises I wonder if they’d understand.”

“Nail art is an indication of emptiness. If she did any work or practical activity, she’d not be able to have it. She’s making an appeal based on having no work or sense of practicality – I can’t think what is appealing about such a woman though.”

“They just do it out of self-satisfaction, leave it at that.”

For me? Not attractive at all, NO MATTER what. Even simple color on nails isn't attractive.

What I always try to ignore on Miku? Her nails.
Why I don't like Mio's other self in Listen!!? Her nails.

Turn off, turn off, turn off.

I don't get why women think they're attractive.

    Men are appalled.

I agree with Castian. Especially the "disgusting" part.

I think it's unfair to say that too bluntly.

For one, those art can complement a fashion look. Just looking at those nails on a naked hand doesn't show the whole picture fashion-wise.

Also, black nails and 'gothic' style would work with goth loli types.

Honestly, a guy that is turned off by simple nail coloring? That's a turn off, coz that's overreaction.

And a guy that doesn't really care or notice the small details doesn't seem to care or notice much at all.

Gotta admit the "work" on some nails its impressive, YET, i find it a not for me "art"
as much as the "art" of african tribes who flagelate themselves or castrate in artistic rituals of beauty, gouging their ears and eyes for beauty purposes.

long nails w/paint are cute and look good in SOME girls/males <--yes males i was goth

but those extreme long nails, let alone they lost the use on their hands, are, no matter how you attend them unclean and hard to sanitate.

Let's see, to support one of this kind of woman it takes around half a mil per year to upkeep. Just to give you an idea, 4/10ths of 1% of Americans are making that kind of money. Just give you an idea, my family make a mil every 2 months and we still live less wasteful than that. Insecure with earnings? It's more like they are showing off they want to bag someone with a lot of income and don't particularly want to do anything other than spending money. This kind of women wont make you want to be a better person, nor will they stick around when your business fail.

is then amount of Porn, video games, animes, and pointless technologies a good indicator that a man is wasting money, or is it a good way of seeing that they have a hobby. Alot of people will go out and get nail art because everyone one else is doing it. thats a watse of money. Girls who like for thier nails to look a certain way and make a hobby of it are fine. Also a girl who has nail art may actually be doing it themselves, thus not wasting the money of having it done, they can also have a job doing it too. Meaning that they're profiting from thier hobbies, and showing intrest in something. judging someone based on what they like is wrong unless they like something completly outlandish.

Personal comfort factor is understandable. I laugh at these chauvinistic tendencies for some of those criticisms to bleed into the 'she doesn't want to work' factor.

Unless nails are excessively long, they won't get in the way of chores that much.

And hey, if it makes the girls happy that's fine. As long as it's not some claw.

But I do agree I never grow them long, ever. Does get in the way of typing. Also, it seems more something the older generation of girls usually are into. Maybe it's something that phases in and out as a fad.

As for color, I think some guys underestimate just how powerful some color on the fingers can be. That's like immediately indicating girliness..

but men do not want that kind of girliness, it just appeals other girls. it gives a perception of superiority from other girls, but in fact when they become engaged it gets in the way.

"why don't you like my nails? they're perfect!" is a phrase most dating men know, changing "nails" for "shoes", "bag", "dress"... most fashion actually applies to all of this.

You failed to notice that all the pictures of the nail art depicts claw like nails.

I for one think its hideous and would not even want to associate myself in public with a woman who would do such a thing to their nails.

It may be a bit chauvinistic of 2chan to say they don't want to work, but if you look at the nails, its fairly clear that they'd never be able to get any work done even if they wanted to, so it truly is an excuse made by the women that do it as it gives them something to worry about.

I kinda agree. I actually considered getting some simple nail-art myself, and I'm a guy. But girls seem to like nail-art that requires imposibly long nails.

You can't do anything physical when their nails are that long, and I'm not even talking about sex. All those cliched scenes that girls love in shows where a girl and guy are running around in a grassy meadow will never happen because the girl would be scared of breaking her damn nails.

Photos 15 to 21 aren't freakishly long nails (they're a normal "long" length) that compromise chores or work, and their kind of nail (just little stamps or one or two rhinestones) art doesn't get in the way. As always everything in excess is no good of course.

I agree with gyakusouhime. The world doesn't just revolve around guys. Maybe it's coz they can't understand that women pay more attention to beauty and aesthetics, that when they put on some makeup, dress femininely or paint some nails, the guys assume that it's just for seducing them... Some girls do it for the fun, for themselves.

Reading so many judgmental comments, I'm glad that me and my bf are fine with each other whenever he grows a bit of beard or I paint my nails a bit.

I don't do nail art but I have long nails and they don't get in the way at all. People who can't stand long nails haven't had them long enough to get use to them. If you take care of your hygiene having nice natural length nails easy and useful for various things that need more perscision. Extremely montrous long nails were never pretty to me though. Fake bedazzled nails are okay. nails can be done gracefully depending on the taste of the person.

Men shouldn't complain about girl hobbies, if they don't want women to complain about thier hobbies. unless their hobbies included mass murdering or trying to commit suicide I don't see why you should bitch about other people's personal interest. Also if men liked the traditional look for japanese women anime girls wouldn't be popular since only a rare few like Mio actually look japanese. overseas women who can afford to beautify themselves are often times the ones working for them and dishing out the money. Men who think that women beautifying themselves is worthless because it doesn't attract them are just as shallow as women who think anime is a waste because it doesn't attract them.
