Vocaloid fans are flabbergasted at the design of the latest addition to the Vocaloid family, comparing her to an eroge character with a gem lodged in her brain…
The new Vocaloid 3 character, still a work in progress according to the site, is in fact designed by noted eroge illustrator Carnelian, and her immaculate if plain style is already proving rather unpopular:
“What eroge is this?”
“Looking at a bankrupt design like this just shows how professional the work of Kei and Yuuki is.”
“A jewel on her head? Pretty weird looking if you ask me.”
“This is going a bit far. Who’s going to voice her anyway?”

Yeah, looks damn good, better than what I can do anyway. I can only dream of being able to draw 1/10th as good as even that. Maybe the japs can see all of the cheapness and flaws in that new character better because they squint.

Yeah... One of the reasons I'm not a huge fan of the Vocaloids is because they don't have any personalities or characterization to back up their looks.
If they don't even look appealing, then they don't really have anything going for them...
Vocaloids with personality defeats the purpose of vocaloids.
Miku alone has 4 voice types iirc, so she has 4 personalities? Nope. A vocaloid's personality depends on the song they sing as. So they don't have a fixed personality.
However, Supercell's depiction of Miku as a techno rocker type became her stereotype, at least for me.
I am a huge fan of Vocaloids because of the lack of defined personality. They can be as useless as people want Kaito to be. Nekomura had the neko + megaman gimmick, Vy1 doesn't have a design but it still sold based on being vocaloid.
I remember Gumi being panned for her orange and red bug sungoggles with people wishing she was redesigned but she's now more loved than Gaku. Give this one a chance and the community might find a archetype and style for her.

Well, indeed she looks weird for an Original Vocaloid series, but let's be honest, those that buy the Vocaloid software's are those that will actually use the program to make music, but I guess there are people that buy them for the cover art...
I have recently aquired Vocaloid 2, and I'm trying to get the grip on how to use the program since I have once in a while free time, and actually want to make some music, maybe if I do come up with something good I'll post it in the forums.
I hope you actually have a musical background because fiddling with vocaloid is like fiddling with a whole new sequencer as in if they existed in stone-age, vocaloid VST, comes as a painful piece of software, hence why you see so little artists well creators having more than ONE HIT song, a few of the really talented already had a background already like sasakure since he comes from BMS and bemani doujin circles mainly.
She's cute but not suit to be a vocaloid. Maybe she made contract with Kyubey to become a famous singer, this's what became of her.
I doesn't look bad, actually, just way too "secondary charcater aura" for the first one in the new series. She looks like the shy-cute character of a harem anime, like Shinobu in Love Hina (sorry, don't know any recent harem anime for comparison)
I think her 'secondary character' feel may serve her personality. Like maybe she'll pull a Ranka Lee of Macross and be the designated underdog idol.
I don't see the point in bashing her design. All the vocaloid characters looks ridiculous until fan redesigns and personality infusing gives them a life from a whole host of user created content and music videos.
And eroge character? So any female in a skirt is an eroge character now?

The other vocaloids have a pseudo-electronic/techno/dance house(mix and match, take your pick) design and feel.
This new one really does give off a feeling of a cheap moe-plucked eroge.
The distance is too great, and no one is gonna buy the "we're trying something different" line.
Um. To be fair, if they're going with a totally new look, they kind of ARE trying something different.

true, but also Miku and the rest were generic in the "no physical representation" of any inherent personality. There's a difference between neutral accessories and no accessories at all. In other words, they stood out by themselves although there was no characterization. However this one is just kind of plain

While the design itself I do not dislike, the fact that this is for Vocaloids does kind of feel a bit odd.
Not to mention the usual dull tones got replaced by shiny and vivid colors.
And that her costume is outright designed to be comparable to idol costumes.

Only problem I have with the design is the jewel "crown" like thing she's wearing. Looks a little too awkward for a vocaloid character (however, if this were mahou shoujo anime, it'd fit right in)

They are just haters, and will always find something, WHATEVER it is, to complain about. Now, about the design, yeah, it gets the underdog feeling, but also something like a phantom thief. It's cause it's drawn by Carnelian.
And maybe the gap between KEI and Carnelian's art style, not to imply which one is better; they are just different style. Afterall, Carnelian's style is classified under bishoujo style--which is more widely used in those kind of games.
