Final Fantasy XIII-2 is looking more like an RPG all the time – now the designers have revealed that the game will include multiple endings, replayability and in-party monsters, and have even provided a promise that the story will be more “player-driven,” even containing “choices.”
From a Famitsu interview with Toriyama, the man who infamously decreed that Final Fantasy XIII would have no towns or confusing choices as to where to go:
There are lots of changes in the battle system – you can for example have monsters in your party?
It’s intended to be more strategic with you able to play by combining different roles. Monsters take different roles, and with their inclusion you can make your own composition.
[…]
There are also other elements included – you can replay it now.
New game+ sort of thing?
Yes, and other elements which will make replaying an interesting experience. For example, this will be the first Final Fantasy title with multiple endings.
He also discretely admits the critical drubbing the game received in some quarters, and seems to be indicating the game will take a completely different approach:
The last game was a story driven by an escape drama, emphasising story and moving the game along with that. However, we received varied opinions from many users, and this time the story will be player driven, with the player actively exploring and causing events in response to their own actions, and having many choices.
Lightning fans are weighing this against developer comments which suggest Lightning will barely feature in the new game:
Lightning is a character who supports the backbone of the story. Samsara makes an appearance, and there are times you can control her.
It at least seems players will be spared a hellish Snow/Serah combo, as there will be a new male character to join her in the form of Noel, who seems to be more in the traditional vein of effete males the series is so renowned for.

Well its *sorta* an improvement.
IF this game its good
IF it has a good review
IF i find it barely interesting
IF it challenges Star Ocean in some areas
IF its FF-ish
i MAY rent or buy second hand FFXIII
and to me thats lots of IFs
One to many its as well...
Why would you even compare Final Fantasy to Star Ocean? They're so different.
They are both RPG's... for starters
In old FF the characters were rich, and interesting, beautiful personas and well difined roles in the dialogs and story.
Its still true to Star Ocean.
not anymore to recent FF games.
im not comparing FF to GTA
im comparing Chineese food with Japanese's
Both are good and Rice and seafood are common.
comparing FF with SO or Suikoden i think its right. since they all are RPG's in the classical sense.
Now Mass Effect and FF be compared, thats dumb
both are good but, differences are huge.
This series dies after X.
At least for me.
And after fucking up Parasite Eve 3 they won't get another chance from me.
seconded
X was the last Trully Treasure FF
XI was a good but not FF-ish
XII.. well.. that was an Off-line MMORPG... Mabinogi Pwnd that game big time.
XIII its just... too.. USA-ish kind of RPG prior Mass effect and US games are not known for its RPG's
i can see FFXIV be in First person, in the future fighitng Roaches beign a Marine soldier... and Shiva & Efreet as Guns and uh.. yeah sucks.
oh dear. someone got so badly tramutised by FFXIV that they forgot it already existed...
OMG you're r8!
well ahem!
i wanted to say FFXV yeah!... lol
u mean ffxv right? xiv already sux...
anyway all you said is true but what about the other XIII(versus I guess) ... that one is my last hope for square if that one sux too I won't bother to look they games...
I too am waiting eagerly for FFXIII Versus.
But as time goes by i better start looking elsewhere for good RPG's
as of late NIS its having a pretty sweet boom on RPG's
Valk Chronicals 2 its also comming soon.
those will keep me playing and buying until Squeenix stops making crap.
FFXI was not FF-ish only because it was an MMO.Story wise it would be more traditional than most FF's that have come out recently, resembling the Crystal era(I refer to 1-5)more than 7,8 and10(don't get me wrong these are great games, but the themes differ),and a bit like 6 and 9.Chocobos,towns,airships,summons,shadowlords,bosses that take forever to kill, crystals, adventure, music(Nobuo!) and etc. are all present in FFXI.
yea I stopped playing FF after X, can't stand playing XII more than an hour.
You don't even have to think of which FF really. X was the last Squaresoft FF related release. The merger should be explanation enough.
its not the same anymore, the only way I'm buying FF is if these so called player choices lead to sex. otherwise I'll stick to bioware rpgs
XII is in my top 3 FF's. I loved it. I don't get the hate at all.
I'm a treasure hunter/!00% completionist type though.
It's opinions like this that make it very difficult to put a blanket statement over the franchise. Everyone's got a favorite, and not everyone will like the same games. As far as I'm concerned, none of the FF games are "terrible," except maybe XIV. They're all enjoyable in their own right, at least to someone. Everyone will have things they like and don't like.
don't worry i like it too, most of them fail to realize how bad FFX really is, apparently a good RPG just needs story and characters, because FFX gets tons of praise and no one really cares about how shallow the gameplay really is...
FFXII had a fucked up story with fucked up characters but the gameplay deep and fun (specially if you get the zodiac job system version)
guess what, SE is right, FFXIII was still a selling success despite what all of us think about it... all they had to do was creating a somewhat good story and characters... if you compare FFX and FFXIII they are actually very similar, the only difference is that FFX managed to LOOK like a deep experience while FFXIII feels linear from the get go
i'm exaggerating obviously, FFX still had some depth to it... and thats is exactly what you can can't on FFXIII-2... just "some depth"...
i miss you Squaresoft
^ sorry for the typos... read: "... is exactly what you can expect from FFXIII-2..."
Alice's comments made the most sense among all the trolls and fanboys of different series. Some like story and characters, some like gameplay or maybe even graphics? I'm more for story and character =) hence I can't appreciate XII and well I do prefer traditional JRPG combat systems but I'd say XIII's combat system is interestingly acceptable though not favourable I guess.
I hate FF8 to the ends of the earth but I can understand people liking it. I however cannot understand anyone liking FFX-2 which set back womans rights 20 years with the retardation that existed within. FFX-2 is without a doubt, terrible.
While it is true that the 'old' FF-Games were all different and had their fans/dislikes, the community accepted them ALL as true Final Fantasy Games.
Because they had enough things in common which connected them but also a lot of changes from title to title. And all of them were blockbuster games which had to be taken serious and not just as any regular 'game'.
X-2 on the other hand wasn't like that at all.
And did you know that there even was a concept behind all this ?
Back then after FFX they announced their new strategy on an shareholder conference. They said they would aim at releasing more games for different plattforms and make them less emotionally involving for the player and thus easier to produce as well, to sink production costs.
This has lead to the whole Parasite Eve 3 / FF7 / Dirge of Cerberus / X-2 etc. thing.
They wanted and announced it.
And this even officially proves the old-schoolers point..
Have to agree, I seem to be alone in liking everything about FFVIII (except Squall), FFX was terribly linear and the game play was shallower than others but still very dynamic and enjoyable.
Castian what are you even talking about? I mean I love Mabinogi, but, what does that have to do with XII?
FFXII its build everyting alike an MMORPG
Turn bar
atack/evade
magic charge
weapon choices
stats
item hunt
quest giving
dungeouns
grinding
the way npc's fight with you seems like the behaivoir of allied players in MMORPG
i say again, everything its build to "Emulate" a MMORPG, but off-line.
and is that suppose to be a bad thing?
put wow for example, some wow player i know play it like a single player, they simply quest/lv all day and rarely if ever goes into party.
a few mmo has excellent storyline attached to it, thus granting a great single player experience (wow being the biggest of them)
Thank god SE actually bothers to try stuff new, because we would all love every fuking jrpg to be turn based x mashing crap, with random encounters and lv grind.
People will disagree about which Final Fantasy is the beginning of the suck fest, and I think it started with X. X was a piece of shit and the ultimate precursor to XIII. It was a boring game, had terrible characters, was completely linear until the very end, and had a ridiculously easy battle system. I give it credit though for actually having the different character roles mean something as opposed to Fang, Lightning, Hope for the main game and Fang, Lightning/Vanille, Hope destroying everything in the post-game.
FFX was a great game. What's with all these people thinking that THEIR least favorite FF game is the standard by which all games should be held?
There are a lot of FF games. People are going to favor different ones. A game is not bad just because it wasn't your favorite. The sun also doesn't start shining when you wake up.
It's crazy, I know.
The same logic that people use to say their favorite game is the standard. If you didn't notice, that's why I stated that it was my opinion. X is terrible to me and I want to play the game that all the other people seemed to find great because my copy must have been defective. The only part of the game I actually enjoyed was the monster arena.
this is what happens when japanese developers westernize they're games. This hole generation has been pretty much nothing but fail and microsoft, shooter games, and the mainstream western audience are to blame. The death of the PS2 marked the end of good gaming.
How is one long corridor "westernizing" the game?
You do know that Western game culture was just as annoyed by FF13 as the Japanese, right?
But never mind, everything is America's fault, sweet pea.
There is nothing Westernized about the FF games. That doesn't even make any sense.
Actually it was the older FF games that were based on ancient western culture, not the new ones genius.
Westernization
instead of a clasic girl aka cute and skillfull
now thare are only 2 types of girls;
Lara Croft - Macho, steroid lover, tough, gun lover, always angry and thinking making her cute or bootylicious fixes it all.
Random Cheerleader - everyone loves her, cheerful, happy-go-lucky, weak, constant need of beign saved even by flies and seldom bootylicious.
what happened to Terra-like girls?
Omg Tifa Lockhart!
where is Riku's thief-like attitude?
Theres a lot to gain from Soul Calibur,Suikoden, Xenosaga and old FF girls personas.
Westernization?
Millia's Alice in RE movies its Lighting
Lighting????
Snow?
why? because they didin't wanted to name them Shiroi or Mikan or Sanosuke etc.
instead of good ol' summons they make them Harley davidsons, and tanks, and introduced Assault rifles!
why? becaus thats what the US buys.
yes they put swords... so Star wars.
i dont know if im making my opinion clear.
Xenosaga was in the future, in the space ,but was nowhere near whats happening now with FF games.
Also FF7 had motorcycles and FF8 a clear western scenario, but yet bareable, FF7&8 were a bit wester yes but not to the point of recent games.
I dunno. I enjoyed FF X-2, and 12 ( though admittedly, not as much as 6,7, or 9)
That was the point my friend.
Using a big name and make an average or slightly above average game that is still quite enjoyable.
It's cheaper to produce if it only features a few good moments and/or gameplay. As long as you still buy it, that's 'nuff for them.
Why would they put more effort in it, if you are satisfied ?
(well, the old square did care ...)
Yup, i DID enjoy the game and finished it with all i could to a 100%.
fighting the evil summons was awesome
the love loss in yuna's dialogs were pretty good too.
alas that game was the first step towards us the gamers to accept whatever Squeenix turd sells
the very first FF (x-2) that maked terrible chocies;
No free roam options
Girls only games are good, but this time not
Paine was... ugh... nvm
Yuna wasn't even the slightes the same character
Riku,miniskirt,thong,hair... i enjoyed it? a bit , in my opinion, was a worsened persona, same as yuna
there was almost no script done, i mean no dialog and no real reason to be an adventurer
"hell im bored" that was it, really was lame
good thing the game fixed that at the ending...
sadly only the ending was interesting.
the rest of the game was just
"hey i can play with Yuna and riku a little bit more, i wonder how many more characers are? or the new looks on the summons!"
Noel reminds me of what Sora might look like if he went HD and/or had less spiky hair. That, or a cross between Sora and Squall.
It's a bit sad that the trailers are pretty much saying that Lightning is dead. She was a pretty good character. Though, it might also be that people just think she is dead while she's actually in hiding somewhere.
So I wasn't the only one who thought he looked like Sora. But he's a bit more.....err...whats that word.... silky?
more likely Sora+Tidus lol
Squeenix needs to let go the Marketing studies and start making characters and stories driven from the heart and not "what USA would buy" thats just dumb.
i have NOT yet played ArTonelico 3 or Atelier Rorona but to me the last great RPG its Star Ocean international for PS3 and the Suikoden Series for PS1 and 2.
Those were great depth characters, rich in personality and background story, amazing events were done even years ago.
How come an amazingly huge game company as Squeenix started recycling bad games and characters?
die in a fire
Towns, Choices, Males, New game+, Diferent endings, player driven story...
that sounds like an RPG...
Why it has FFXIII even in the title?
maybe, after lots of media browsing and Reviews i'll buy this one, maybe.
A monster int the party sounds interesting
but a Summoner summoning clasic summons its needed
and what's that about"Finaly a clasic male character"
it sounds like "A cloud clone"
and in the Video i can see a Waka, a Tidus and a Sora, why im not surprised.
Aww I want Lightning to be the main character.
I agree. I was expecting that Lightning would be the main character... Instead, There's this sucky guy.. No seriously... I don't like the new main character...
Totally agree, Lightning <3
This game just dropped from "*might* buy it" to "is this even worth gleaning at?"
Thus proving, no matter what, SE cannot please anyone. Even IF they went back to the old ways you all wish so much, you all would find something else to whine about.
"S-E never evolves or tries anything new!!" would be in print in 5 seconds.
SE can't please because no one is ever happy with what they're trying to do. Honestly, people complained about everything in Final Fantasy 13, but suddenly it has to have lightning in it?
Besides, Noel seems fine for a male protagonist (like every other FF had). We'll, he's a lot better than Snow at least. And it looks like you'll control Lightning a lot anyway, judging by the trailer.
im guessing versus thirteen is canned then? if it is screw u squeenix the boycotting begins
@procrastinator,seconded
Lol, i tought the boycot started inside-out with devs doing crap games until a Re-make of FFVII its released.
Lightning will probably be the new Sephiroth...
NOOO WAAAY!
U mean like an ultimate rival, right?
because Sephie its like mindless, retarded superstrong momma lover cry baby mage/ninja/knight/samurai/time mage/black mage/white mage antagonist ...
Sephiroth is so awesome I'D hit that. Actually he'd probably be topping so, I guess HE'D be hitting it.
Hm, MMF threesome with him and Lightning. We'd wreck her. Fuck yeah.
What?
