Top 10 Reasons You Didn’t Buy The 3DS

love-plus-3ds.jpg

Nintendo’s much trumpeted 3DS increasingly has a Virtual Boy air about it, with buzz and sales having subsided rather too quickly for comfort – Japanese asked why it is they haven’t bothered buying it explain why in this survey.

The ranking (multiple choice format):

1. It’s too expensive/You’re waiting for the price to drop (100%)

2. You’re happy with the DS/DSi (60.6%)

3. You’re worried about the burden on your eyes (41.2%)

4. The screen looks as if it may cause sickness (39.4%)

5. There was hardly any launch soft (24.6%)

6. You’ll buy it when the games you want come out (18.5%)

7. You’re happy with your phone or smartphone (11.1%)

8. You’re happy with your PSP (10.8%)

9. The battery looks too weak (8%)

10. It’s heavy and you don’t want the hassle of lugging it around (7.1%)

Although concerns about price and satisfaction with existing consoles are the main issues and look likely to subside with time, that two of the top 4 concerns are related to the effects of its screen can hardly be promising.

I didn't buy it mainly because of 3/4.

I thought to myself, "If I buy a 3DS, I wont even use the 3D function at all...", so I didn't really see a good reason to buy the 3DS especially with its currently weak amount of good games.

    2. You’re happy with the DS/DSi (60.6%)

This is just a bad time for there to be an expensive Handheld from Nintendo of all companies...

Honestly after what...7-8 years of DS and PSP they add 1 analog NUB and slightly better graphics than PSP and charge it 250$? Thanks but no thanks.

And region lock? Who the hell though that would be a good idea???

It's quite sad we have regional locking in this day and age.

Esp. since most games are never released outside of Japan, and the only way to play them would be via import.

But if they're regional locked, then it's physically impossible. So, really, you can only pirate them.

Rejoice: Nintendo has finally reached the state of 1995s, launch of DVD. They are only 15 years behind now!

    > So, really, you can only pirate them.

Yes. Especially since most games I have enjoyed on my DS were never released in Europe.

Region lock on the 3Ds was a really dick move from Nintendo. And it's just one of many drawbacks the 3Ds has (price, no games worthy, battery life, technology slightly better than other current handhelds).
Anyway, i think 3Ds will sell better when Nintendo launches it's first party games. People love Zelda, Mario, etc. enough to overcome it's flaws.

Back before they were released, I was wondering which of the Wii/PS3 I should get, luckily Nintendo made the discussion for me, when they reported the Wii would be region locked. Both companies kind of defied my expectations on this with Sony having the reputation as controlling, and Nintendo seeming like a consumer friendly company. Seems like Nintendo is only getting worse. I hope the NGP is region free.

You mean the thing sony hasn't priced yet thats "more powerful then a ps3" that will probably cost upwards of 600 dollars easily?

    Comment by Anonymous

Slightly better? You seem to be under the impression the PSP can pull off anything remotely as good looking, as, say, Resident Evil: Revelations or Mercenaries. And those are first gen games.

Seriously, this is qualified as a "good" comment?

more like "why the hell would I buy a 3ds to play SF4 in a small hunch screen, when I can play it in an XBOX on a 40' LCD?"

psp has much more games and its a whole lotta cheaper.

Nothing new I suppose for the 3DS, since my PSP and DSi can handle all my handheld needs

No games at launch doesn't exactly make 3DS a hype machine. We all know that it will be awesome when all the good games roll out - that's when everyone will buy it.

I don't think common people (not gamers) would fall again because of a gimmick. They have fallen for the touch screen in the DS already (and for the motion controller in the Wii). Maybe they realised games are not for them, despite how cute the handheld gimmick could look.

This is a real phenomena: Even Johnny Depp whose latest movie (Pirates of the Caribbean 4) is in 3D cannot perceive the movie in 3D.

I can't see 3D as well. No, I'm not blind in an eye, it's just that I have weaker vision in one eye, making stereoscopic 3d impossible to see.

I find this point rather interesting, if 10% of people can't see the 3D effect, then it goes up to 20% who think they can't see it, and with all the social interaction, 30/40% of people who have a bad opinion of the 3Ds because of this. Add the usual 10% of people who'd dislike it anyway, and it makes up to 50% of people who are reluctant to buy the 3DS.
(I know my reasoning is quite far-fetched).

A population study revealed a surprisingly high incidence of good stereoacuity: [3]. Out of 188 biology students, 97.3% could perform at 2.3 minutes of arc or better.

And that's why theres the slider to adjust the 3D level to the point people can see it / deal with it. Personally I can handle the 3D without a hitch but my roomie can't use the 3D except with the slider barely up or he feels ills.

My reason for holding off was #6, waiting for DoA:D to come out (Which is a very good anthology of the series) and if that hadn't come out in May I'd probably have waited for Phoenix vs Layton. To be blunt, yes the launch lineup was pathetic.
