More details on Final Fantasy XIII-2, Square Enix’s sequel to the controversial Final Fantasy XIII, have emerged by way of a short trailer – which some have interpreted as having the towns and perhaps even non-linear segments so absent from the original.
The trailer:
The absence of towns (omitted for being “too much work“), shops, levels, choices, intelligent gameplay and other traditional RPG elements were a major if controversial source of criticism for the original, although this did not stop it selling millions of copies anyway.

"AUTO-BATTLE" not again... I wish battle style were more like X-2.
Auto-battle wasn't so bad since the game never made choices that were better than the ones I wanted, so I still had to play. It was a hindrance though when it controlled the AI, especially when they are healing, debuffing, or buffing. The biggest problem with the game besides the corridor-fest is that there is exactly 1 strategy you use in EVERY SINGLE FIGHT. I beat the whole game using only Commando, Ravager, and Medic. I only used Saboteur and Sentinel because the game basically makes you use them in two boss fights and you don't need buffs to beat any of the regular enemies or bosses.
I didn't do a lot of grinding, so my weak party had to costantly change formations to suvive. I had like 4 formations I switched between. So maybe you just leveled up too fast.
That's just like your opinion man. I think battle system in FF13 was the best one in years. Auto-battle doesn't require you to micro-manage easy monster fights, but it's very deep in big boss fights. X-2's system was way too tedious in small fights.
i am shocked.
you は shock
I feel shock. Oh my~
mmm nice looking forward to it.. i did love XIII didnt care what people said about it and bought it! and it was like one big movie i enjoyed it
Oh I like it the most when I just sit back and relax while watching my friend play it.
How does a person who's saying he likes the game gets downvoted? Oh, Sankaku.
I guess on Sankaku you are not supposed to like Final Fantasy or Sony.
Isn't final fantasy rpg to being with
Yes, but FF13 is more like a...walking game(?) with battles...
Not so much battles and cut scenes of battles you're required to press an occasional button during to at least give some vague sense you might have some control of what's happening.
I don't mind auto-battle, bur what I do want to see are tons of towns/cities, tons of boss battles (epic ones for good memories) and at least 2-4 super bosses to put yourself into a great challenge. And please they don't add any Ultima/Omega Weapon boss incarnations, if so, I'll cry myself to sleep. Or not. And also tons of equipment and weapons and of course epic final weapons per character.
Well, FFXIII had lots of bosses - we don't really need more. Towns we do need. And some exploration.
but were the bosses in ff 13 really all that hard or memorable?
The only difficult boss for me was the Bartandalus fight in Oerba. Everything else was forgettable and Orphan was a joke.
XIII's strongest bosses were the optional ones on Gran Pulse. Long Gui, Vercingetorix, etc. etc. Those required intelligent strategy and some quick Paradigm changes.
I see they're sticking with Japanese stereotypes for the main characters...again.
Well, it's a game made by Japanese people and Japan is a huge market for Square-Enix so that kind of makes sense.
If they're going with such unoriginal characters like they did with the prequel, they're better off not making it Japan only.
wasnt demon souls made in japan?
Wasn't Demon Souls also the only example you could think of?
Uhh...Vanquish?
picked out the most popular one to prove a point.
there is also dark souls, on the ds there is... forgot the name, shit, it sucked but it wasn't stereotype at all, dungeon explorer or something like that.
than there is also elona which i believe is japanese...
damn this is harder to think of answers for then i thought.
Ya know Demon's Souls had I think MAYBE a million copies sold worldwide, right? It was a success for a niche overly hard dungeon crawler, but not for the biggest franchise in the genre. I thought the gameplay was okay but the setting and characters were too western in their GRIMDARK depressing brown buildings and dull generic equipment and appearances. For all that, I could have played Oblivion or Dragon Age, which didn't make me want to throw a controller at my TV whenever I encountered a new enemy with a mechanic you can't know about without dying to it first.
As far as FFXIII, as I've said many times FFX was just as linear as FFXIII but gets almost none of the flak, and all JRPGs are pretty much linear. Personally I'd rather JRPGs focus on good character development, a good quick gameflow, and more fun combat than the illusion of choice, which is what you're really getting with more Gran Pulse-ish areas and random encounters. I notice in "non-linear" RPGs like Bioware games that although you can ostensibly choose your path, there's usually only one "correct" way to go through the game to get everything, and you need an outside guide to know what the triggers are most of the time. You get the choice to be a decent guy or an asshole in dialogue, but it usually makes very little impact on story and actual character development takes a huge hit as a result.
That's not to say stuff like towns don't need to be in a JRPG because those help build atmosphere. However, if a game can last as long as FFXIII did and have so little grind that I barely even noticed a lull in the plot until the supposedly good Chapter 11, I think it's doing something right. This trailer looks promising, it might build on the strengths of the original while handling some legitimate complaints about the original. It'll NEVER shut the whining up though.
Demon Souls sold a fraction of what FFXIII sold in Japan, so its still a bad example.

demon souls was made on a VERY limited budget, i cant find the numbers, but a typical game this gen costs 10-25 million to make, and demon souls cost a fraction of that, i cant find what ff13 cost, but remember a number of 60 million for game alone not including the marketing, which if i remember right, i couldn't go anywhere without seeing or hearing about it, can i say the same about demon souls? i cant remember one ad for that game...
now let me say my impression of demon souls. i never once felt like i died for a reason other than i suck. and to now, i have beaten the game a few times, and first play though i died about 20 times, mostly due to bossed made to be killed in multiplayer, or environmental hazards i didn't notice. after that, i may die 2 or 3 times a play through now.
now thanks for mentioning ffx, as i hated that game more than any other jrpg to FUCKING DATE. and this was a time where i would put up with shit more than i do now. you want to know the worst "leveling" system ever... look at fucking 10. its only slightly worse than 13.
and the story in 10... holy shit was it bad... i cant compare it to 13 because i stopped playing that because i hated playing it so much.
DO NOT DEFEND THESE GAMES MAJOR FUCKING FLAWS
there are other people who can agree that its crap but story got them through, and ill agree thats a possibility for 13, but not enough for me to trek through the shit that was every other aspect of that game.
Lots of games are made in Japan. What does that matter? You know, like Mario?
That's what a JRPG is, son.

XIII had two pretty bad ass male characters between Snow and Sahz(sp?).
hello there, just posting to let you know that your faggot.
snow is a twat, an asshole and is incredibly unlikable to the point that I would mob the guy with my friends if he is a real person.
People have long speculated that Tetsuya Nomura is gay, but don't quote me on that.
Is that a girl on the second pic? That's... awesome.
i think Tales, Dragon Quest series is the only jrpgs that retains the features of what a rpg should be.
Square-Enix's final fantasy team puts way too much focus on graphics and perfection and neglect all the elements that make up an RPG.
It was already downhill from Final Fantasy XII, where the game feels more of an MMORPG...
an rpg should give you a role and vast choices.
such as, your role is savior of the world.
you choices could be what class\sex you play, what style you play as, your party members, where you go, and how you level.
bigger choices could reshape the world, give you different outcomes, or just end up killing a story important character forcing you to advance an alternative way.
and jrpg are usually just adventure games with stats. im not saying they are bad, just barely able to call them rpgs.
JRPGs are called JRPGs for a reason!
You are still in a charcter (with personality) for the whole game, linear or not, it is still a rpg
by that definition, uncharted is also an rpg. along with sonic, mario, kirby, god of war, assassins creed, and the list goes on...
but of course, just in some games you play an epic hero exploring the world and fighting off villains and such. And in other games you play a bunch of annoying people running down a hallway for 20+ hours...
JRPGs are called JRPGs because you're always stuck as the same boing MC, who has 5 generic support cast members bent on saving the world from darkness.
I never said JRPGs were good after 360 came out.
Also, those action games are NOT rpgs as the main character (or story) is not fleshed out

you can argue that... at the same time i would say that uncharted made me care more about its characters than most jrpgs can do at this time, and they can also make me more immersed in the character than jrpgs, because the main character isnt a self doubting twat that has to be dragged kicking and screaming through the plot.
also, good rpgs never force a character on you, you make the character yourself. now in video games, this inst fully possible yet, but there have been more than a few games in the past where you play a hero with no past and fight till you beat the main boss, WITH story along the way, im not talking about nes old where that was the game, i mean a story rich world with a blank shell you as a main character you play as and do good with.
in most jrpgs, you have no real say on what stats get focused on when you level, leveling just happens, in most jrpgs you also dont have a choice in what armor and weapons you use, as you are tied to once class and the weapons get progressively better, there is no this blunt weapons is more powerful than this sword, but slower, where you define your character through the choices in what weapons you want to use.
and in that sense, uncharted is more of an rpg than jrpgs, because you get a character, with a back story, who isn't a sniveling cunt, which you control and play as you want to. you want to use a pistol the whole game, a shot gun, an assault riffle, or take the enemies all down with melee, all those answers are right, the same is almost true with assassins creed but its probably a better example because of the pseudo leveling systems.
that's why they are called jrpgs. Imo, your view of rpgs is more inclined towards the western side, games such as Dragon Age, The Witcher, Baldur's Gate etc
JRPGS are totally different though, and when the thread title says 'May Be An RPG', it probably refers to RPGS like the old Final Fantasy, Suikoden, Golden Sun etc. Since it originates from a japan source, i am positive this is what their 'May Be An RPG' be referring to
there are really 2 ways i will call a game an rpg.
one would be what i said above, where you get choice, shape the world by your choices, and so on.
another is stats. heavy, meaningful stats. where gaining every point is an achievement and an advancement in some way. however in recent years, the more rpgy games from japan have streamlined leveling, taking away stat goodness, while giving nothing of my previous deffinition.
take a look at disgaea games. thats the kind of stats i'm talking about. where you have levels, you have hidden levels (reincarnation), your weapons have levels, and everything you do can modify stat advancement in some way shape or form.
i definitely miss flying around in an airship and exploring the landscape and random battles or job class promotions.
You miss random battles? You're the only one bro.
He's not the only one. I miss random battle and those other stuff too.
I also miss random battles. The idea for random battles came from dungeons and dragons, and they ran with it. I like dungeons and dragons. What was wrong with random battles? What was wrong with the take a turn combat system for that matter? I can tell you I hated FF 13's system because for the first 4 hours I was just sitting there mashing the fuck out of the x button. I quit FF 13 around 16 hours in too.
Btw, FF6 is my ideal Final Fantasy. Its linear up through until you get to the floating continent, and then you can make choices that really do affect the game. Wait for shadow or leave him. Then, world of ruin, you have a choice of how you go looking for your friends. Its a real godamn RPG.
And one last thing, I'm already unimpressed with the graphics I saw in that trailer. They look somewhat similir to FF 13, but, and this is a big one, how come the sand looks like they took brown and just used the paint programs fill in tool?
Random battles give a sense of meaning to your movement... of course with a full heal between all battles and no MP any sort of management of resources is completely moot.
random battles in d&d though could be fun and relatively easy. but we are talking about a table top rpg and a video game, thank god random battles are mostly done away with. i love being able to see the encounter, or at least AN encounter, instead of out of no where... monsters.
it adds to a game because in low health situatuions you can sneak ahead or run away based on should you head back or is their a save sopt close by you want to hit up
Then you should try one of Atlus shin megami tensei games.
That said where is my persona 5?! Come on Atlus dont dissapoint your fans this year E3.
Atlus is soooooo underrated. Everything about the game feels outdated but yet the game is what an RPG should be
I dislike what you call "rpgs", I like when they have engaging story and characters that have personality; main characters in wrpgs are 90% faceless, and always having little actual storyine actions that define the character (I understand the feeling of being you, its just that if I wanted that, I'd be playing a tabletop rpg).
Also, in videogames the jrpgs you despise so, were the ones who created the genre (for the vg world) so don't go lowering them
the jrpg was based off d&d
over time they evolved away from rpgs, and became a game where you watch a story and level up
after that, some (square enix) are trying to evolve the stats out of an rpg without giveing it a branching story at all
jrpgs are on the verge of becoming just a 40 hour movie (13 was the first experiment in this) with road blocks in the way between movies (a level grind, or a pain in the ass boss)
i REALLY hope that jrpg turns around, because i love the anime art style, and fantasy worlds they create, but hate game play of many recent ones. and i hate the setting for most western rpgs (lol war, ho hero it up now) but the game play is SO much more satisfying where everything actually matters.
your role must not be limited only to "savior of the world". Hell in table top, you can even be the "evil overlord of the world" or "oppressor of the weak" if you want too.
Square Enix is getting closer to their dream.
An RPG, that's a movie.
Players watch the game. For 50 hours.
Pressing buttons optional.
so is that what they've been doing with FF:spirits within, FFVII:AC, and FFXIII?
fck i didnt see that one coming, i thought square was trying to advance their tech enough to make The World in .//hack
I think Dragon Quest VIII was the last really old school JRPG produced by Square Enix that I have played. I had to put in well over 100 hours to finish it and it had very few cut scenes. One of few games recently (2006?)produced where you could lose a "boss" battle even though your were leveled up pretty well.
Nothing wrong with FFXII looking like an MMO. What matters is that there is a hella lot more to do in FFXII than FFXIII. The only thing bad about it was that it didn't expand enough on the story. Some people would complain about how the world is too vast, but I believe it's the same group of people who didn't play it at all because you can teleport to places in FFXII using teleporting(orange-color) save points.
XIII sucks both in gameplay options AND story. Long, boring 'tunnel' with next to nothing else to do outside battles, smothered in convoluted piece of shit for storyline.
It's like S-E was trolling comments from XII. They basically took all that was missing from XII and smother XIII with it(cutscenes), while taking away everything else that made XII good(gameplay options). This is wrong, because the point of making games in the same series is to improve on what's already there, NOT TO TAKE AWAY WHAT'S GOOD AND PUT SHIT IN ITS PLACE. Yet fanboy faggots of XIII insist that it was an 'evolution'. Apparently they mistaken that for 'devolution'.
