Chinese media are reporting that a youth was so desperate for an iPad that he sold a kidney to pay for one.
The 17-year-old boy, a resident of Anhui province, reportedly came upon online information describing how he could hawk a kidney over the Internet – just what he needed, as he was in need of cash to buy an iPad 2.
He arranged such a sale, and had the organ removed in a Funan province hospital, receiving some 22,000 yuan ($3,500) in cash. His surgery complete, he returned home with his new iPad and various other gadgets.
However, knowing him to be broke, his mother became suspicious on seeing what he had bought, suspecting perhaps that he was up to no good. She confronted him, and he soon confessed to having sold a kidney.
His mother immediately reported the matter to police, but the organ dealer was nowhere to be found and the hospital identified claimed it knew nothing about the deal and in any case had no facilities for conducting such an operation. The whereabouts of the kidney are unknown.
The youth has his iPad, but is said to regret having sold a kidney on the black market to get it. It seems unlikely he will see his missing kidney again.

Actually this is quite tragic, the boy probably is getting suicidal. Getting an iPad in exchange for a kidney probably means he isn't expecting to live for long enough for that being an issue. The poor sap probably is incredibly depressed and is considering using that iPad to escape from reality.

first off, the kidney is something you can live without for a long time, making getting a transplant for someone without a rare blood type fairly simple.
now, in america you could expect to get something like 60000$ for one. the cheapest of all the organs.
the liver comes in at 200000-300000$ and the lung clocks in at 500000+
granted all those numbers are give or take 25% but really to someone who realy wants one, they will pay as much as possible.
granted, selling organs is illegal, but their are ways.
now i mention china because you can expect to get 1/10 the america cost, as its more or less a 3rd world country, and than he sold it to a broker not a buyer, so half the number minimum.
the reason it's cheaper isnt actually because the country's practically 3rd world but because you can just do a lot more stuff with less money, thus making money more valuble in China than it is outside.

His Kidney is made in China... hence the cheap price.
If you think about it, $3500 might not be such a bad price in China. He'd probably have to work a few years in an iPad factory to make that much money, spending 12 hours days, 7 days a week in prison-like conditions. So, if you look at it that way, it might not be such a bad deal. Plus, he may have helped save someone's life in the process.
On the other hand, I'm sure he could have found better things to spend it on than overpriced electronics that will be obsolete in a few years.
