The crazed fan who spent over $100,000 on 5,500 AKB48 CDs seems to have been outdone – no sooner had he been exposed than an earlier report about a similar creature who spent 20 million yen ($250,000) on AKB48, though he only bought CDs in lots of 1,000.
“Kachiyosu-san” is introduced as the manager of a video store who “uses most of his wages on AKB48,” having done so to the tune of 20 million yen.
Once again the fact that 20 million could undoubtedly buy an encounter with one (if not several at the same time) of these girls seems not to have occurred to him.

To sum up, AKB48 maybe never really was that popular, since most of the CDs are bought by the same group of people.
As usual, musicians who are actually good always have to sit at the bottom of the charts, even decreasing the exposure they so need.

Enka is like the Beatles/Elvis, except the latter kind of music almost doesn't exist anymore outside of japan.
I find Arashi/SMAP fine too, and while not my taste, they're definitely miles better than stupid pop groups like akb48 or korean boybands who sells their sex appeal than their music

I'd also like to contend that you couldn't buy an encounter with any of the girls if you tried. They make enough money that they can't be bothered with risking their entire contract for a small sum of cash (in comparison to their salaries) (The most highly paid girls make around 400k/yr).

No one has mentioned this, but this is the single for the AKB48 senbatsu election; since there are so many members in the AKB48/SKE48/NMB48 groups, there's an annual popularity election to see who gets to make the senbatsu, the main group to sing in the single. There are various ways to get tickets, but the easiest way is to buy singles. This guy is a fan of Minegishi Minami, I believe, who's fairly popular but is really in the area where she's not QUITE popular enough to get a lot of screentime but makes it into the single. So the reward for this guy is for every single he gets, the chance to see more and more of Minegishi grows. Furthermore, in each single there's probably an event ticket, so he has more and more chances to see her live.
