I'd hoped to see names like Revy and Balalaika (Black Lagoon), Faye (Cowboy Bebop), Haruko (FLCL), Bulma (Dragonball) and many others.
Then again, television has always been an enemy of long-term memory.
But Faye spent more time complaining and being tsundere than actually being useful.
That's not to say she was a bad character, but I don't think her characteristics would define her as 'cool'.

Agreed wholeheartedly. But Faye also was quite cool in every scene in which it made sense. Younger generations are becoming idiotic about characters having emotions. Like they expect no emotions overlapping their action anime. Faye was very cool when on her missions with a singular purpose, but when she was faced with character growth, she became somewhat emotional, but also never truly crumbled under it. Same with Spike. As such, that's her being a cool character (not shades and cigarette cool, mind you, but cool, easy, in the flow of things, which is part of the multi-faceted definition). Her introspective response to the truly uncertain is that of someone whom would be called 'cool' if they were a guy. But then of course she wasn't adverse to freaking out when she sees a naked man with breasts.

Sancom is pretty much a haven for a lot of other people who only like the popular stuff (because it's popular, a fashion).
Look at Madoka, it wasn't talked about until ep.3 came out.
Or look at Angel Beats articles on Sancom, most of the people who commented said it was shit, etc, but then later articles come by and everyone comments on how Godly it is... then guess what? No one talks about it once the next season started.
It's just become a fashion at that point, you know what I mean?
Maybe it was not exactly a good point, but I'm sure you can see that our results are going to be fairly similar to the Japanese ones due to that fact.

Revy is major miss and I also think Yoko (Gurren Lagann) could be included.
I think Sankaku should give some detail of how these lists are generated - like who are people trolled...oh I mean polled on the lists. Might shed some light on why they seem a bit skewed.
Also no Revy does = fail.
I think the largest factor is the memory of most people due what's been aired on television recently. If one could remove this buffering a more accurate ranking may start to emerge. If it could be compensated for via some equation, well, that's another matter...
That said, Motoko is pretty cool, imo, and GITS isn't new (even the series isn't NEW new). Indeed, アニメワン refers to the to the '95 movie in its ranking.
Balalaika is no girl, she is a mature woman. But seriously, no girls from Sailor Moon, School Rumble, Amagami (e.g. Kaoru Tanamachi). And NO Shiki Ryōgi from Kara no Kyoukai! Is being cool the same as being moe in Japan, since on the list there are several girls who's more moe than cool.
Rather than just television, Japan puts out polls practically every day. These types of things are obviously aimed at people with short-term memory.

You know, that may have more to do with most of the current viewers not seeing the older anime too you know? Just because you've seen an older anime and thought that the character was cool does not mean that many of the voters have too.
Well of course not, that's why I used the word "hoped" rather than "expected".
Still, said anime do tend to rank high on various GOAT lists.
I was hoping Gunbuster, Diebuster or TTGL would show up. Guess the list should be 'top ten coolest anime girls no less than three years old'

No matter how much I like Homerun-chan, I have to agree that Revy and Balalaika should at least have been on the list in the first place (...damn you, ambiguous grammar...)

I second that. Cyberpunk features some of the coolest characters in an intelligent way afterall. And two of the biggest names would be Ghost in the shell and serial experiments lain.

I honestly am getting a bit sad now at Madoka being so present at the top in places it doesn't seem to really belong. It was wonderfully made, but in no way is she the coolest character compared to several others, including those on that list. I've been pretending to ignore the sheer short-sightedness of these polls, but this is getting ridiculous.
I will, however, agree that her well-roundedness makes her deserving of a place on the list. That, and if she had two seasons with which to build her character like Kusanagi, she could have become stronger and the writers could have better bridged the gap between her cold, cliche bad-assery and her reason for being that way.
I'll have to agree with an earlier statement, Madoka is this generation's Evangelion. Existential metaphysics 101 delivered in the correct package for the time. It'll be interesting to see if Madoka stands up over time as Evangelion did.
I know we like to complain about the short-termed memory of the polled but for one I have to agree wit a lot from this list:
1. Homura Akemi (Madoka)
Akemi-chan is on par with Raharu (Haruhara Haruko) on single handedly fighting against giant monsters and for the right reasons.
2. Motoko Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell)
Is NOT new, GitS it's quite old.
3. Hitagi Senjougahara (Bakemonogatari)
Is just badass, but this is a list about cool, and she is, kind of like Yomiko Readman(tachi) an example of making something cool out of something mundane (stationary).
4. Haman Karn (Gundam Z)
Is very old. 17 years from the manga, 6 from the anime.
5. Mikoto Misaka (To Aru)
It's the fucking Railgun! And anyone who has seen the Teleporter fighting knows she belongs here too.
6. Saeko Busujima (Highschool of the Dead)
Ok this is just the newness.

A lot of the old ones that you guys are proposing are not that much better.
Yoko is definitively y missing but Raharu? She's a silly clown-bitch 99% of the time. And Faye is in a very low point of her life. I miss the Code Geass girls, man that show had awesome female leads.
Revy? I admit I don't know her...

Numbe 5, shoudln't be there she is yelling at Touma and/or chasing him like a crazy, thats not cool. Kaori Kanzaki at least should be there, that girl never loses her cool unlike Mikoto who starts raging at Accelerator.
I don't want to sound shallow, but Evangelion at least had jaw dropping animation quality. But yeah, that's about it.
A shame in my opinion that something like Pretty Cure couldn't quite pull off something like Madoka Magica since the shows were meant for little kids. Same for even other 'existential magical girl' stuff like Princess Tutu.
I guess the difference is, Evangelion came in where nobody was really asking for such a thing. You could tell the magical girl genre was just aching to show off more existentialism in its themes.
One of the more striking ones being that the 'first Pretty Cure' being one of the girls' grandmas who was literally climbing out of the firebombed rubbles of World War 2. That was just surreal.

So are you saying you could do any better or are you just gonna sit there and bitch like a little shinji?
Frankly, Evangelion was years before my time of watching anime. As in QUITE a few years. But I get the impression from a lot of fans that animation-wise, it got a ton of attention.

Are you serious? The original Evangelion TV series looked like it was animated by letting a swarm of retarded monkeys draw on paper with their feces. Even for the era when it came out, it was both painful and embarrassing to watch in terms of animation.
The new movies are gorgeous, sure, but claiming that original NGE's animation was anything but an embarrassing trainwreck is just sad.
also think of it like this, are you more likely to remember a show that you just watched or a show that aired 5+ years ago? not like that's always the case, but at a certain point in time, more recent events overshadow older ones. Also, more people are less likely to scroll through an entire list of characters, when the one screaming "Choose me!" in their heads is usually right at the top. like i said, doesnt have to be true, but it is a logical way to think about it
