Sony has finally restored PlayStation Network service after it was catastrophically hacked, with most of its previous functionality restored after nearly a month of downtime.
The most important points of their announcements:
The PSN’s most significant functionality has been restored (including online gaming) although certain features such as the store remain offline.
The PS3’s firmware has been given a compulsory update and users must change any passwords.
Not all regions are getting the updates and service restoration at the same time, so some areas may still have to wait some time.
The freebie “Welcome Back” package announcements are region specific and expected in the near future – the major elements are expected to be free game downloads and PSN Plus access.
Additionally, Sony claims it has instituted a wide range of security measures to prevent further disasters, although given they claimed their security was top notch and a major priority even prior to the hack, this may not do much to reassure those whose details are now in the hands of unknown hackers.

after Square Enix and Sony, I'm just waiting until Microsoft let's me know that they got hacked as well. Good thing I've only used prepaid cards for XBox Live.
I'm pretty sure hate-magnets like Microsoft gets hack attempts everyday. Microsoft isn't even telling us that, much less those attempts that did succeed.
Then again, Microsoft itself is a software company, which has its own arm of network and security divisions(where else would you get those security updates for your Windows and Microsoft Security Essentials?). If they still get hacked, it won't be XBOX users only that gets compromised, but also any machine that runs Windows. It's small wonder that Microsoft would have an easier time dealing with cracks.
Meanwhile, Sony is mainly a hardware manufacturing company. I bet 100 bucks that a third party developer built Sony's Playstation Network.
Microsoft? Admitting they get compromised?
I don't think there's any chance in hell that they'd acknowledge it; not even by Sony's magnitude of loss.
If they don't disclose a serious security breach, they (Microsoft) would have to settle with lawsuits and fines even bigger that those possibly faced by Sony.
Sony's management of the security breach is actually the way most Japanese companies handle crisis. No wonder.
Well, there won't be any lawsuits if no one knows, right....? *winkwink*
Its good to know that they still haven't given us a solution. Just free stuff...
In Sony-speak:
Security failure = Terrorism
Advertising = Free gifts
Every company that gets hacked would be security failure then? A bank that gets robbed would be security failure?
How do you not consider 100 million personal details being stolen as an act of (cyber)terrorism?
They had bad security though and they knew it though they spent most their time battling pirates.
Sorry but if you leave your car running and it is taken it is just as much your fault as it is the person who stole it. I don't give a damn if the car is a rusted out ford escort or a 2011 Bentley, it was still the user's fault for not securing the vehicle (or at least taking the damn keys with them).
Just because they stored more information on the server does not make it a greater crime, certainly not terrorism.
Yeah, Sankaku is Not the best place to form opinions. Its like the Sonic Retro of anime/manga. Found it funny it came back on my birthday
I hope you don't base yourself solely on the information Sankaku is giving away...
Honestly, as it stands, it's hard to tell what's true anymore in this whole affair as sensationalism has struck pretty much every single gaming news site down to the very last with only a few providing sources in which you can find far less aggravating and far less terror and anxiety inflicting statements.
The whole thing's been spun out of control and everyone's acting as if they're specialists when all they've got to hold unto is the information that one too many sensational article with overused hyperbole and the few bits of specific details they have aren't settled in stone as they'd like to believe as there are various matters that sound midway between reality or PR talk.
The only facts we know for certain, 100% are:
PSN is down
Sony reacted late
A hacker or a group of hackers are involved
We're getting free stuff
PSN is coming back on.
Anything other then that is partially conjecture and hypothesis. Including your "left the car with the motor running" analogy.
Ignorance is bliss, there must be a lot of happy people in this thread.
First of all Sony had the most up to date software available in spite of what you might have heard to the contrary. They did not have a gaping security hole that they knew about and did nothing about. That myth has been busted wide open but as it's not sensationalist nonsense that gets page hits, you might not have heard much about it.
http://bitmob.com/articles/detective-work-reveals-psn-servers-up-to-date
There, now you have been educated and can move on to things like 'Well they still had bad security because they got hacked', but what would be enough security? One more hurdle to overcome? Five? Ten? Fifteen? Is there some point at which you will freely admit that 'They had plenty of security but got hacked anyway'?
adding ur knowing, our acc n cc info have been stolen.. that a good news for those using cc right??
Nonetheless free stuff is always good
♪The best thing in life are free♫
I hope I can get on PSN at some point soon, that is all I'm concerned about at this point...
Though I do want some compensation for not being able to get on PSN all this time though...
♪At the expense of stolen identity♫
*corrected*
At the expense of identity stolen...? ;
That free stuff is good for those of us who weren't stupid enough to give credit card data over the Net, bought only points cards, and had no significant data lost to the crackers. :)
You say "free stuff," I say "advertising."
no corporation of any kind will gaurentee they wont ever be hacked. Wat will they say if they DO get hacked, even with the best "solution" and a 1 in a million chance?
use ur brains plz = =
No problem fixed, but free stuff. (Un)fortunately, this will blind people from the bigger picture with "OMFGFREESTUFFBRO!"
only kids n kids into this trap "OMFGFREESTUFFBRO!"
I swear Artefact is like the master of writing the worse possible news about anything, whether it'd be good news or bad news. I find myself coming here mainly in anticipation of it because no one else does this as bad as he does. miss those ffxiv articles, everyone gets their panties in a bunch about that especially zam lol.
This one sounded more like, "It was terrible, but the world has now been saved!"
Yet all i feel like doing is playing Final Fantasy XIII
Well I guess if I had to choose between losing my credit card info and other stuuff or playing ff13... Wait no would rather lose my info.
If they're gonna say "PSN is back up and running" Then
they should have put back to store along with it.
This sounds like the perfect time for peopel to figure out how to hack this free stuff, keep it and the process will start all over again. I only want it back up for Demon's Souls, I doubt Sony will give us free reign to have everything free for this PSN+ junk. Probably just the shitty or casual games that won't do shit
Actually, PSN+ has pretty awesome stuff every other month. The infamous 2 ,Killzone 3 ,Twisted Metal and socom 4 betas were amazing.
You just have to be a member whenever all the awesome shit comes up. You see, that's why they do it like that.
Example :
Month A
-Something awesome!
-You are not a member.
Month B
-Something shitty
-You decided to get a 3 month membership
Month C
-Something shitty, but everyone else is still enjoying month A. But not you. Enjoy your shitty casual games.
Month D
-Something good, but not awesome.
Month E
-Your membership expires
-Something fuckawesome
DAMN IT - - - SOOOONNNNNNNNNYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!
When enough people get left out of the loop, they'll throw money at them for the 1 year so they don't miss any of the good stuff.
Just want to ask question: I have two accounts one US and one Japan... according to the news (read from actual PSN site), does that mean that I'm able to log in for both accounts?? and that I need to change PW for both??
and also, what is this "free stuff" they are going to give out?? I only free stuff that they are going to give out as a welcome back whatever was "Music Unlimited subscription for PS3 & PC"...
good to know nothing changed
yeah.. updated and still can't get on psn
Except the loss of 102 million people's personal info.
if its lost; then why do so many people have said information?
pro-tip: learn to english
played Uncharted 2 all night :D
Now that it's almost over. Lets stop bickering over who did what and just look to the future and hope this shit wont happen again.
I'm just relieved to know they are doing their job to restore this shit back up. Hackers are running wild these days.
of all the times for my email to be hacked...
or one could avoid the whole situation and still play on a ps3 by not using the PSN network
I play on an Xbox 360
Useless comment is useless. So is my reply, but I just wanted to point it out.
How's those exclusive games coming along?
exclusive???? hmm, continue plying XBL... i'm still leveling in crysis2..
can u list the exclusive on ps3??? beside on getting hacked on psn info which i already know..
Who cares about exclusives when you're still able to access all your games online? Specially those requiring connection to be playable.
quality over quantity faggot
How's that living in the past thing going?
it have deeperrr meaning...
Doesn't really matter. I'm just gonna delete my account or get it cancelled and not use PSN again. Who knows when the next attack on Sony may happen. And just because they were able to strengthen security does not mean shit to me. Hackers will always find a way around it and attack it again.
No matter which path you take, there is always of danger. That is called, living in the real life my friend.
No matter what we do, something will always go wrong.
Don't even eat anymore, you will get hungry sooner or later so why bother.
why eating is involved??? ur statement is sooo fanboyrism...
Better get off the internet entirely, never know when the next attack on your computer may happen.
then why do you use the interwebz at all? aren't you scared of hackers?
good moves, ban sony product....
