Nintendo Announces Wii Successor

satoru-iwata.jpg

Nintendo has announced the announcement of a previously unannounced successor console to its hugely successful but now largely moribund Wii.

The formal unveiling of the new console, only known to be another home console, will come at E3 in June, and its release is said to be scheduled for April of 2012 .

Announcing the announcement at Osaka, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata was characteristically cagey about the exact nature of the new console, but seems to rule out any further toying with stereoscopy:

“I want to offer a new proposal for the home console.”

“If we consider that 3D TVs are not really well accepted by the market, 3D would be difficult to make the centre of the product.”

Sales of both Wii hardware and software have collapsed as the product nears the end of its lifecycle, and Nintendo profits have correspondingly plunged 66%, so a successor was a given, and probably an urgent prioirty in light of the weak launch of the 3DS.

Speculation about the new console centres on its spec (likely to be relatively low given Nintendo’s preference for inexpensive hardware, but how low or high in relation to the PS3 and Xbox 360 is an important question), and what sort of cunning gimmick it will incorporate to draw in the masses.

Motion controllers are now old hat, and current console 3D display technology requires useless 3D TVs nobody wants, so just what will be delivered here remains a mystery.

It's not like Nintendo is making all the games for the Wii. Blame EA, Ubisoft, they are making shovelwares, and sucky ports over and over again for the Wii and DS.

You can't blame them for the shitty hardware Wii has.

But they all look worse than PS2 games, some even look N64-ish. No excuse for EA and Ubisoft to release those ugly games with no contents, no gameplay what-so-ever. Resident Evil 4 (a Gamecube Game!) looks so much better, lets say, EA best attempt, Dead Space extraction, or Activision's new Golden Eye.

Right, let's blame Nintendo because third parties lack competency in developing games for the system. It's been proven that you can get great games for the system, like Trauma Team by Atlus, or Monster Hunter Tri by Capcom.

Also, I find it funny just how nobody on Sankaku complex has the brains to figure out that it's the shovelware that sustains all the big budget games they play. HD gaming operates at a ridiculous loss, the profits have to come in from somewhere, right?

Bring back the Official Nintendo Seal of Quality and all that third party shovelware will disappear.

It's Nintendo's fault it all exists because they allow developers to publish anything they want, without reserve.

The old Nintendo would never let the shit filling the Wii & DS libraries to exist. Just as Sony & Microsoft will not allow that shit to fill their catalog of licensed titles.

Compared to N's other handhelds, it's kind of weak IMO.

The general impression of it on online is that it's pretty "meh" once the "newness" wears off.

It wasn't praised as much as the DS.

It's easier to find negative articles about it than positive ones. Everything from it's sucky battery life, the high return rate and it didn't quite "selling out" like it's predecessors.

There is of course the elephant in the room that no one really talks about.
    The NGP.
It's announced battery life is comparable to the 3DS's, it's more powerful, and developers absolutely love it - it exceeds the specs of next gen cellphones, and has ease of sharing assets between it and the home consoles like the PS3.

Additionally, IGN has learned that the system will be based on a revamped version of AMD's R700 GPU architecture, not AMD's Fusion technology as previously believed, which will, as previously reported, out perform the PlayStation 3's NVIDIA 7800GTX-based processor. Like the Xbox 360, the system's CPU will be a custom-built triple-core IBM PowerPC chipset, but the clocking speeds will be faster. The system will support 1080p output with the potential for stereoscopic 3D as well, though it has not been determined whether that will be a staple feature.

In terms of the design of the console itself, the overall size will be comparable to that of the original Xbox 360 and the system is likely to resemble a modernized version of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).

Tested out the 3DDS at my local best buy, of which they had that pilot wing game in. The steroscope was neat- but, the narrow as hell angle I had to keep my head was awful! It was LOCKED into a set position too!! I began to grow a massive headache for when I played I had that tendency to bob my head to the movement of the plane -- That REMOVED the stereo for micro seconds til I corrected my position and going back and forth was NOT GOOD. I don't care what game comes out on that system for it will only be a overpriced ds in the end -- since most will probably turn OFF the stero moments later!!!

Apparently the controllers will have a touch-screen, it will be backwards compatible with Wii games - you can use the Wii-mote as a controller for it possibly - there might not be friend codes, and the code name is most likely Project Cafe.

Nintendo DS, released on 21 November 2004.

    iPhone, began development in 2005.

    Who is emulating who?

BTW, before somebody says, yes, the touch screen technology was invented by neither of them. It is only the most probable act of "emulation" which Nintendo committed that I can think of now that would create such a dubious comment.

Nintendo is making a new console because they ran out of titles to rehash on the wii.

With the new console in HD, they can now re-re-re-rehash all their titles.... IN HD!

So which nintendo fans are ready to crack out their wallet for more rehashes?
