Use to live part time off the ship in a Hotel for 192,000 yen a month back in 2002~2006 with most of it paid off by Uncle Sam. I could only use about 2~3 months a Year, but I was free from that fucking ship when it docked!

you can find a fairly cheap apartment through gaijin houses like http://www.sakura-house.com/ if you overlook the fairly small size they are about as cheap or cheaper than housing in any large city in a first world country.

Your usage of the word Japan is wrong... It's places in major cities, such as Tokyo are ridiculously expensive. And the same could be said for the five major boroughs of New York City.
Anything much in the way of houses with garages though? Couldn't ever live without my car. Ever.

Millions of Japanese can afford an apartment with parking in Japan. It's called not living in a big city.
I currently have two cars, but I live 50 km from the next major city. My rental place comes with parking for 2 cars, one of them is covered. Unfortunately it means that any guests have to park at the convini next door. I pay 75,000 yen a month for a 2LDK. My living room is bigger than some of my friend's apartments in the city.
Japan is more than Tokyo, folks. This is the home of Toyota, Nissan, Subaru, Etc. We drive cars here.
And obviously you need to park them eventually...and that talk that housing in japan is expensive is related to where you are, just like everywhere else in the world... here in Brazil there're some places that are so expensive while there are some places that it's much more cheaper...and i'm talking about places in the same CITY(são paulo)...so in other words you can either pay your whole paycheck to live in a small apartment on the heart of the city or you can simply pay 10 times less in an apartment or a house that probably will be bigger than the downtown one and easily take your car and drive for a bit more to the downtown...

Once you go dual monitor you'll never go back. I did wonder why some have a tv no bigger than their monitor in such a small room. Use a tv tuner and save space?

Me myself have a 42 inch HDTV, a PS3, a 360, a WII, a 500watts 5.1 hometheater, blueray player, satellite tv, AND a vhs (for old porn) also my PC has 250watts 2.1 speakers, 22 inch LED monitor, Core i7, 8 gigs of Ram, 4 terabytes of hdd, and dual 460 cards (480 where to expensive) also my bed, all my clothes, and all my media (games, movies, music, programs, porn, etc) ALL if this in a 4 by 3m space. IT is cramped but heavenly.
hint: nobody cares about the specs of your rooms entertainment system.
