Top 10 Best Games, According to Japanese – Halo Top

rorona-totori-bikini-docking-by-kishida-mel.jpg

Japanese gamers quizzed on which games they find most satisfactory have not only granted top position to a non-Japanese game, but to a non-RPG as well, in the form of Halo: Reach…

The ranking, which also sees other western games score well, in the form of Dragon Age: Origins (only just released – the sequel is still some way off for Japan, perhaps for the best) and the mega-blockbuster Red Dead Redemption, as compiled by gaming rag Gamaga:

1. Halo: Reach – 9.5

2. The Legend of Heroes ZERO NO KISEKI – 9.4

3. Disgaea 4 – 9.3

4. Dragon Age: Origins – 9.2

5. Blazblue Continuum Shift – 9.2

6. Dream C Club – 9.2

7. AKB1/48 Idol wo Koi Shitara… – 9.2

8. Red Dead Redemption – 9.2

9. Atelier Totori – 9.2

10. Do-Don-Pachi Dai-Fukkatsu – 9.2

gamaga.jpg

Those wondering about the unusually high placement of western games in the ranking (particularly most Japanese will clearly not play anything other than RPGs featuring angst-ridden teenagers saving the world) should consider the fact that it is based on “satisfaction” rather than actual sales.

As a result a niche game with a pitiful sales and a small but dedicated fanbase can do quite well – although Halo’s 45,000 sales versus the 120,000 of Zero no Kiseki and the 95,000 of Disgaea 4 is none too shabby all the same.

    Oh the irony.
Upon reading this, my first thought was...

"Megidola, you don't watch very much Anime do you?"

If there is one trend or element that appears in the vast majority of anime, more than any other trend or element out there, it is this. The protagonist is a school-aged kid. Even if the protagonist doesn't attend school, he/she's almost always "of school age".

The reason for that is because those anime shows are meant to appeal to kids of that age, and so that's the age the protagonists are

if that wasnt the case, Anime its still the answer

Well, Dragon Age is right up there. The japanese DO have good tastes in american games, apparently ^^

    Comment by Anonymous

Oh c'mon, there are better American games out there. Dead Space 2, Battlefield 2, Portal 2(...why are these coming in 2s...?)...

They just had to pick the most bug-ridden crap ever, with torturously bland backgrounds. They probably picked it up only for the dating part.

The only reason anyone plays Halo is for Multiplayer bro. Those games you listed minus Battlefield lack multiplayer, at least as far as I know.
Don't know where you are getting the idea that the game has Bugs though. While only a decent game compared to the other Halos, it is solid and and lacks very many bugs, if it has any. I'm a Hero in the game right now, I would know by how much I play if it had any bugs.

    Comment by Anonymous

    "Good tastes in american games"?

Oh, boy. But Dragon Age was one of the worst offenders to storytelling pacing I had the disgrace of playing, just the 2-to-5-hours-long dungeons and retarded gameplay, not to mention the forgettable characters, bland setting, and uninspiring dialogue.

Had Mass Effect, I would perhaps agree with it- but, no.

Since when was it a crime to play anime style games? Oh wait, for you anime nay-sayers, anything with the anime style on it is "weeabooish".
If they have the story/comedy and/or characters, should it even matter?

Oh, and for the record, "Weeaboo" is a word meant to refer to huge Japanophiles who use Japanese catch phrases they see in Anime's because they think they Japanese. They're are various other things that go in the category, but being a fan or enthusiast of the Anime/Manga artform is definitively not one of them. Let's just say, being an Anime/Manga fan makes you no lesser/greater than a Cartoon/Comic book Fan because you all enjoy 2D animation/comics.

Being a JRPG gamer doesn't make you any lesser/greater than an FPS gamer, because you all play video games.

Halo deserves it. Bungie (company that made halo) made a huge effort to help the Red Cross in the Japan relief effort. I know that doesn't reflect the quality of the game, but in terms of foreign titles halo is very deserving.

    @anon 04:30

Your reasoning is flawed. If Bungie helped Japan by donating to the Red Cross, then I applaud them for it. However, you can't say the game deserves to be the best because they helped Japan, then contradict yourself by saying that the quality of the game isn't affected.

Halo Reach is DECENT at best. I don't know how it made #1 on the list...

Exactly, no matter how the company acts, if the game does not earn the ranking then it is a big FAIL.

However if they did give up profit to help the relief effort than maybe they don't deserve the shitty end of the jap prejudice agains foriegn game makers.

Persona while good games, have an over whelming fuck you factor to them.

ever play the game, crusting through it, not to hard not to easy, than one enemy just fucks your day up and you lose an hour of play time?

or the boss battles, which i hear can last over an hour, where the whole time you have to be focused.

the games my be good, and possibly fun, but lets take disgaea 4 as a counter example. THERE ARE NO FUCK YOU MOMENTS, and through the first story run, immensely satisfying, through the side stories, satisfying to an extent, through maxing out a character to 100% (11 hours of work minimum per character, and 17 hours per item) and than also satisfying through to the statistically hardest fight in the game, i believe an item world ball invasion or something along those lines with modifiers to make the stage 4 times harder and maxing it out with passing whatever they are calleds.

The Persona games were challenging at times, but not overwhelmingly or maliciously hard from my experience. There were usually enough save points that you shouldn't lose an hour due to a random enemy, for example.

Though thematically the games are about the hardships of life, so I suppose it would be fitting for it to be difficult...

Dude Persona is incredibly easy. Try Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne if you really want to get your ass handed to you. Actually, you should play it either way because it's a great game, but it's probably the hardest JRPG out there.

as for megami tensei's games i second that!
every persona title falls back at Nocturne qhen talking about Difficulty, especialy vs the "Special" monsters like the first time against "El Toreador"

or the "i dont remember the name" of the manikins, hideous even as a random encounter
