    They'll need trillions of yen they'll never get back and tens or hundreds of thousands of young people who will be taking government wages instead of paying taxes, and a birthrate high enough to keep the ranks full.

    What's more, United States troops stationed in Japan act as the best deterrent to Chinese aggression. While it's unclear if China would make a move on a non-nuclear Japan, it is *very* clear that if they made a move on a Japan with US Soldiers, it's automatic war with the United States as well.

    They pay peanuts for it and yet, that promise of auto-war with the United States is a priceless defense policy in today's world where the US military accounts for half of all military resources in the entire world combined.

    Yeah, if China attacks Japan, it would be BEST for a world war 3 to emerge. I see your logic there... not.
    What if China wouldn't be around. Would you move your troops off Japan's territory or find a new potential aggressor? My guessing it's the later. Next it would be North Korea and Russia being the bad guys.

    Oh and, recap, the only ones who waged wars in the past few decades were the U.S. and NATO states. No one else, really. How could you miss that vital factor?

    The country with the biggest military force inevitably turns into a global terrorist state. Same as a democracy led government turns into an oligarchy. It's time you wake up and smell the flowers.

    You're prejudiced against his intended meaning, and therefore you're not allowing yourself to understand his point.

    His point was that the danger of WWIII becomes a deterrent, and thus prevents the Chinese attack in the first place.

    One might also point out that the USA could easily have nuclear weapons stationed in Okinawa, and those weapons would be a massive deterrent.

    You *are* however mostly correct when you write: "the only ones who waged wars in the past few decades were the U.S. and NATO states. No one else, really."

    However, you're oversimplifying. Consider, for example, Islamic aggression against Serbs, and Jewish aggression against Gaza.

    It would be more accurate to say that the only nations waging traditional war are backed by the USA.

    However, NONTRADITIONAL wars are a very important aspect of modern war. That includes non-state actors.

    build an army? what for? to protect ourselves from our own incompetent politicians. its cheaper to use the americans. building an army cost money that can be better used for earthquake reconstruction and more than 75% of japanese have no problem with mutual defense treaty. sorry for the english

    Well, all the counties must have an army. In case of USA declaring they have weapons of massive destruction, terrorist or another excuse and begin invasion/bombardement.

    I would consider joining an army if there was a slut that gets raped by a whole division every day.

    At present, the Japan Maritime Self-defense Force have something that can be considered as an aircraft carrier, they just used a fancy name for it

    pfft.. self defense? they can't even defend themselves domestically and now they want to recruit? the odds are stacked severely high on making an army lol it would be just a phase when they recruit. after a while it'll be dissolved.

    It's crap like this which contributes to the reality of every competent army looking at the JSDF as the laughing stock of the world's armed forces.

    Our guys will tell you, there are some poor bastards who are good soldiers in the JSDF, but they're surrounded by gun Otaku and the kind of trash that these advertisements draw in.

    Christ, Libya's mercenaries get more respect.

    Well considering they aren't allowed to actually raise an "army" it kind of throws a wrench in things.

    Comparing a militia that is only there to defend to a full scale army run by the other big powers in the world is like comparing apples and oranges.

    On a side note there are only 4 types of people in the Army of any country. 1, Over patriotic types. 2, Trigger happy "gun otaku." 3, Assholes with no where else to go. 4, The guys that wanted the training and discipline. All that changes really is the ratio.

    I served at Misawa Airbase for three years. We were largely of the opinion that the JASDF guys were pretty hard core.

    Japan has been inspired by Strike Witches, SDF Strikewitches Defense Force. You can be a Strike Witch today, the SDF wants YOU!

    Same principle of recruting. Just need the instructor to keep saying, the leg attachments for flying will be done soon so keep studying and doing the exercises.
