Inside Japan’s “Zone of Alienation”

Journalists have been visiting the abandoned towns caught in the 20km evacuation zone surrounding the ruined Fukusimi Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, revealing mildly radioactive ghost towns and packs of abandoned animals amidst the unrepaired devastation of the earthquake and tsunami, all of which have inspired unpleasant parallels to the “Zone of Alienation” surrounding Chernobyl.
Photographs from a Chinese journalist:
The horses would likely have died from simple dehydration rather than anything radiation related.
A rather less melodramatic but no less illustrative video report, with a reporter approaching to within 1.5km of the stricken plant:
At the levels of radiation recorded, humans would exceed their maximum acceptable annual radiation doses in days or hours, although even at these levels there would be no immediate danger to health.
For comparison, in the abandoned town of Pripyat near Chernobyl ambient radiation exposure is several hundred times higher than the levels seen in the town above.
The sheer genius of building 4 nuclear reactors mere metres from a shore regularly battered by tsunami will doubtless be remembered for some time.

Funny thing I just finished playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. a minute ago.
Now I feel like playing some more.
GET OUT OF HERE S.T.A.L.K.E.R!!!!
DON'T JUST STAND THERE, COME IN!
WHAT ARE YOU DEAF? WHAT ARE YOU HERE?
Bet the creepy feeling is twice as big when you're actually there.
Also for some reason first pictures of abandoned streets and empty buildings reminds me of "Highschool of the Dead" landscape.

Is there much easily accessible land in Japan that isn't often hit by earthquakes and tsunamis, though?
Ripe for looting.
If we can keep the rioting, murder, rape, and general barbaric decay to a minimum, I think it's fair a little orderly, civil pocketing should be expected.
Seriously fuckers like you would be the first to die.
poor horse...
and you can't even eat it due to the radiation...
I bet that the horse was banned from eating because of radiation. By Ishi, of course.
That there horse drowned dude! It was trapped inside and looks to have been unable to escape before Drowning~ depending on how long it's been dead, it's still edible~~~~
Beam me up Scotty...
NEUTRON BEAMS ARE US... triti
In Serbia here we still have Caesium in our fruit and vegetables since Chernobyl, and we are not even sharing borders with Ukraine. The epidemic of malignant disease is still at large,so even if radiation is low, life in long terms cannot be of good quality in those conditions
And about the last part.
Yes it stood mere meters from shore in perfect working condition for 40 years...It's so much a human error as it was a natural disaster
Also germany has many Caesium in his mushrooms in many parts of germany. in Southern it's not recommended to eat mushrooms from there.
So that's where Marisa gets her magic mushrooms.
gundams would have saved them
No, they wouldn't, since the power of the earthquakes and tsunamis are so strong, even for giant robots. But Goku would have blast the tsunamis away with his Super Kamehameha!
Wow this is one of the coolest things I've seen. Always wanted to enter an abandoned area~
No, it's not cool, it's real life in the affected areas in Japan. If it's a movie or anime/manga then it's cool, especially with a good plot/story.
Me too, really cool!
Poor animals screw the humans what about the animals.
Why can't we care about the humans and the animals.
Cause humans can't seem to realize they are animals too.
I guess our egos get the better of us sometimes. We don't normally think of ourselves as "lowly animals" even though we have varied coloration and markings like any other animal on the planet.
I don't know, but due to the radiation the animals become monsters and eat humans. You are feeling better now?
It's what those fucks deserve for abandoning their animals. Fuck Japan.
Wow the video is almost like a zombie outbreak or something... cool stuff
The place still looks good despite being struct by disaster. Our country looks butt ugly compared to that.
And soon the scavengers and looters will scour the town for items of value.
The same happened in Pripyat, but at least it's not as worse in japan then it was in the Chernobyl area and Pripyat.
In Soviet Russia, town loots you.
People probably are already scavenging things from the town though a lot of stuff looks water damaged.
Wow, (they made it look like) the clock stopped at 2.48, two minutes after the epicenter occurred.
Talk about standing still in time...
S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Fukushima
I should probably feel bad for the victims but those pics are just too eerily cool.
Barbaro never had a chance...
The dog has the look of someone who might want to scream "HELP!!!" And all he get is some dry meat and a "ganbare" from the humans. Yeah, that is going to sustain him alright.
He looks more confused than desperate. "Where'd everybody go???"
Don't worry 'bout the animals. Unlike humans, they're built for survival.
The thing that bothers me is that who ever owned the horses didn't just let them out to graze.
Tsubasa O kudasai Evangelion goes perfect with this.
