77.9% “Self-Restraint Has Gone Too Far!”

hanami-by-oryou.jpg

Japan’s ongoing infatuation with cancelling as much fun as possible out of a spirit of “self-restraint” and ostensible solidarity with quake victims, most famously through efforts by Ishihara to ban hanami, seems to becoming increasingly unpopular.

has-the-self-retraint-mood-gone-too-far.jpg

A survey conducted by rag Nikkei on 4,823 of its readers found 77.9% agreed that Japan’s recent fad for pointless cancellations in the name of “self-restraint” has “gone too far.” 12.2% disagreed.

Most of the opinions solicited seem to show an awareness of the economic damage such restraint will wreak, as well as concern for the political implications:

“Self-restraint is just inflicting secondary damage.”

“It the economy stops, the disaster area is going to be even more hard hit.”

“Excessive self-restraint will damage service sector and food industry revenues.”

“Buying Touhoku’s produce is another type of aid.”

“Consumption has the same value as donations.”

“Self-restraint shouldn’t be forced on people.”

“The spirit of conformity is far too strong.”

“It’s frightening – during the war we were told ‘luxury is the enemy’ and ‘We won’t want for anything until victory is ours'”

“We need to distinguish between self-restraint and economising on electricity usage.”

A real man's only weapons are his fists and legs. Don't confuse your RPG weaboo tendencies(swords) with what constitutes a real man.

Men who win, though, are men who uses anything from his fists, to melee objects, to firearms and his brain. ESPECIALLY the last two.

Sure, just make him sit through hours of what he hates. Seriously though, assassination would only give him the importance he so desperately desires. With the crisis after crisis ensuing, they should tell him to screw off and totally find a way to impeach him since he's not helping one way or the other with the situation.

Self-restraint is no different from just holding back. And that's something not a lot of people can do. I know that without a doubt because I hate holding back. But if it can teach people how to better control themselves to a certain degree, then oh well, no problem that. But holding them back from doing the things they enjoy in life then that could be a problem. It sounds like I'm contradicting myself but I try my best not to so there.

No, it doesn't teach people how to 'better control themselves'. Usually, when someone says that someone else is 'out of control' they really mean that person is doing something they personally disagree with.

This self-restraint thing is equivalent to moping around doing nothing. If events and other such 'happy' forms of commerce stops, it'll affect the economy, and Japan's been in deep shit in that area for some time now.

People who have AIDS don't lie on their beds for 5+ years just waiting to die. They go to work and try to live for as much time they have remaining.

I'm willing to bet most politians up there don't really give a fuck anyway, deep inside. They try to show that they do to keep their seats. Yet, hundreds of thousands of people are still stranded at relief centers and probably will stay there for a month more. You can have all the restraint you want but you can't even so much as build temporary homes for them even though it's already April? Fucking opera these people are running, I tell ya.

Yeah, I agree with this. You aren't doing those that died or those that survived with little or nothing any service by practicing "self-restraint". In fact, you could even say that doing this is insulting to them *because* you have the means to enjoy yourself and live life normally.

Eh... you are forgetting that the old fogies and the religious brainwashed think that 'self-restraint' 'honors the dead' or some shit like that.

It doesn't, but try convincing a oldster about that.... you would have a better chance of having the sky rain gold tomorrow.

How about this tact then: Next time you're out partying & having a good ol' time, take time to remember there are people less fortunate than you who can't do so & give some of that expendable income to charity, some of that free time to community service, & be on your best behavior otherwise.

They probably could have said it like that, but Ishihara is just making a political show & everyone else is probably thinking the rest of the world should go, "Oohhh! You poor unfortunates in Japan, I will give everything I can to you everyday until your troubles are over. I'll even go without just to help straighten out your lives that much faster!"

However, this is the real world, and when the going gets tough, the tough go partying anyway!

The victims probably won't even care whether or not the rest of the population, fortunate enough to be unaffected by the disasters, practices "self-restraint"; they have more pressing concerns, like their own lives for example, and thinking of ways they can start from scratch after the previous events robbed them of everything.

Plus, though the sympathy given them during the first few weeks, maybe even the first month, might have made them feel better, any more "understanding" you give them after they finally come to terms with what happened and would rather not be reminded about it just feels a little alienating...you're making the victims feel different and pitiful, and for what its worth, some people do have their pride.

The bad thing is...12.2% is still pretty large. I wonder if the 12.2% of these people those with no life or old senile morons? I mean I think that if 99% of the population disagreed with self-restraint then maybe the politicians would shut up and take back some of their pointless bans.

Self-restraint is not a good answer to disasters. You will only tied yourself to a thing called "not-doing-anything".
People don't need that shit. What they need is the same happiness as before the disaster to boost morale so that they can work as usual, instead of being sad all day long.

That said, Ishihara must be one hell of a lazy bastard for "not doing anything" (a.k.a self-restraint) for this disaster.
