The Japanese masses offer a ranking of their favourite One Piece characters (or at least those who count themselves members of Luffy’s crew), for once providing a ranking not determined by breast size.

At first I also did not like the designs that much but now i can´t imagine One Piece in any other style! It just fits like a glove!
A) It's a unique artstyle, which means it's going to greatly appeal to some and greatly repel others. If it had a generic run-of-the-mill artstyle, it wouldn't do much of anything.
B) There's more to animation than just the animation itself. I'd think this should be obvious.
It's also the detail in the artwork and how he does the inking.
Anyway what does a non companion of Luffy mean and why does I don't even watch one piece an actual choice. This survey doesn't tell much compared to the ones done in shonen jump. Most of the time it's luffy at the top a new crew member or when a crew member gets a back story, something like that.
It means that it's not one of the main characters, One Piece has one of the biggest amount of characters in Any manga/anime. So they can't put them all there.
I personally loved the art style. When I started watching it all those years ago, kind of bothered me for the first few episodes but quickly forgot about it as the anime itself was that awesome. Now the art style has become my favorite.
Not really a unique art style.. A friend of mine believed that the Fairy Tail manga was drawn by the One Piece artist.. so there's some similarities in OP to other titles.
The author of fairy tail was a student of Oda's, iirc, so it's the other way around. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.
The author of Fairy Tail has never worked as an assistant. He dropped out of manga school after a semester and self-taught himself before debuting with RAVE.
It's not that the artwork is shitty, most of the character designs are just so damn ridiculous, I feel like facepalming constantly when I wath it. But you do kinda get past it, eventually.

I couldn't get past it. I hate the artist's style. Usually I can get used to a style for a long anime, but not in this case.

Not surprised about chopper being #1 at all. He's definitely a fav of girls and little kids from what i've seen.

Ironically, when a chart was made to see who watches one piece it was like 80%+ were 18+ So unless All Girls were the ones that voted, doesn't make sense. Its one of those jokes one person does the rest follow, I mean who doesn't love Chopper, he's awesome.
Pfft... Chopper is the best char in that anime.

I am not a fan a One Piece, but, for what i watched, Usopp is a really cool character. And he have the voice of the fantastic Kappei Yamaguchi. I am sad that he is only in 10.
Cool? I've only watched 53 episodes, but so far Usopp hasn't really been cool even once. He's not a bad character, from depth and character development point of view, but most of the time he's just so fucking annoying. -.-' I never thought a time would come when I'd think Yamaguchi's voice annoying, but when he's voicing a character like this, there are moments when I think even his voice annoying.
Well that's the problem you've only went 53 eps. in. Keep going if you want to see some really good stuff.

sogeking sniping scene at enis lobby.
To name a few.
Ussop isn't cool at all. Sogeking is.
What about the recent chapter where he gets cool hat and shit.
I have to say Nami is my favorite, but not because of breast size. I like that she is the sanest person in this crazy bunch, and I like that she has a balance of self survival, greed and loyalty.
What balance? In her case greed is 60% and self survival is 39,9%.
I laugh at how he states Nami is the sanest when Robin's in that crew.
You could even argue Ussop being more sane then Nami, at least he doesn't lose his mind over money and drags people into danger because of it.

Zoro from the start was my favorite character. Glad he's on the top 3.
