Akihabara has been swarmed by a mob of otaku and fujoshi desperate to attend a quake relief fund-raiser headlined by none other than Aya Hirano, in an event so chaotic it was almost cancelled…
The major participants in the event, dubbed “Stand Up! Japan!”, took in a variety of seiyuu and anime musicians:
Aya Hirano
Yui Sakakibara
Chihiro Yonekura
Minami Momochi [the doller]
Tsuyoshi Koyama
Jun Fukuyama
Daisuke Namikawa
Hideo Ishikawa
Makoto Ishii
The actual event was organised (if this is an appropriate term for an event characterised by total chaos) by the participants themselves, taking place outside Yodobashi Camera’s flagship Akihabara store.
Hundreds of excited seiyuu fans soon descended upon the event, creating huge queues and massive confusion as they sought to catch a glimpse of the stars – although the organisers repeatedly had to remind them that a glimpse was all they could expect, as photography, handshaking, conversation and indeed any activity other than handing over cash was banned.
Online the reaction to this “charity onanism” was sceptical, with many critical of the evident lack of organisation even as they applauded the sentiment behind it.
Cold weather and huge queues also seem to have discouraged some who were actually in a position to attend, to say nothing of the lack of photographic access, although the event easily exceeded its expected attendance, to some extent becoming a victim of its own success.
Hirano tried to control the masses using Twitter:
Please calm down and queue in an orderly fashion.
The event is not supposed to be about taking photographs! It’s a fund-raiser!
If there is any more confusion there might be injuries and the whole thing will end up being cancelled.
Fortunately, it seems she was successful and the event managed to conclude as planned.
How much money was raised is not yet clear, although if the crowds were anywhere near as enthusiastic about donating as they were about thronging around the seiyuu it should have been well worth the trouble.

Misleading title, although i think some people do go there just to make fun of Aya Hirano...
So Aya still draws a crowd? I got the impression from sankaku over the past few months that she was a pariah in Japan and had been abandoned by most if not all of her fans. Given that, I'm surprised she'd be headlining the charity effort. Wouldn't they have put the biggest draw on top?
No she's a pariah to creepy Otaku after they were disillusioned by the shocking revelation that's she's no longer their pure perfect virgin waifu.
Despite the pandemonium I hope the fans contributed generously. The people of the Touhoko area will need it to help rebuild shattered lives.
Kudos to Aya and the other seiyuu for donating their time and effort. They could just as well have done nothing.
With all these news about her you should just create a seperate blog for Aya where you can bash everything about her in your typical cynical manner. It'd be a huge success.
+1
Then we finally could forget about her and those attention seeking antics.
Those antics of hers are as funny as they are self-destructive.
This is funny when Megumi Hayashibara actually claim she was getting married (and in a concert no less) everyone support her
10 years later a seiyu claim she is no longer "pure" and she is basically a daugther of hell and all evil of the world
Well, life used to be easier in the 90's. People didn't feel the need to get pissed off all the time like now.
People are just choosing to get pissed off about different things. The 90s was expansion in perception, now stupid people think it's moving too fast, so they're instigating a contraction. It is exceptionally annoying. I remember the days when 'damn' and 'blast' were the worst we could get on Cartoon Network and Comedy Central. Now look at them. We have the 90s to thank for that. People got pissed about stuff like that, but they lost. Now, the terrorists are winning... terrorists being stupid people. Since they fight with spreading fear as well.
No offense, but you comparing troll queen to former seiyuu queen Megumi Hayashibara? HA!
You call gold digging "pure"?
So, what do you do to keep a crowd from getting out of control? You Twitter them to stay calm, of course.
I'm surprised the crowd was even checking twitter... or did they calm down from people there telling them and aya hirano did nothing to help.
Surprised you? This is Japan.
What is this, 1990's?
Smart-phones are no longer a rarity.
In africa, it may end up in bloody bloodbath, like when UN distribute relief effort in Somalia.
Tweets have much desirable effect than voice it seems
You obviously haven't watched Durarara.
She lost her first kiss but she's still is a virgin. A machine that detects any person whether he or she stills a virgin is on the verge of completion. I can't wait for it to be on sale. No one can fake their purity anymore.
Fukuyama Jun and Daisuke Namikawa?! I wish I was there :( (Obviously I'm a fujoshi)
I hate living in the Netherlands.
I want Aya Hirano to bear my children >)<
I don't think she actually did anything worth bashing. Her motives were good, the only problem was that she had trouble keeping the crowd under control. Like her or hate her, do we really need to find an excuse to whine every time she does something?
Ok basically they sit beside the donation boxes then people queue up and throw money in while getting to see their idols very briefly. Sounds simple enough just that where large crowds are involved things can easily get out of control.
Still it was a simple and nice idea and well done for doing it. Just needed some better organisation.
Well people = money for help so = good it was busy as long as no one got hurt
Sadly enough, there's so many people that SanCom brainwashed to think alike and start hating Aya. Majority of the negative comments all sound ill-informed and plain ignorant. :/
What, you're criticizing her for trying to raise some funds for charity..?
I don't get this, knocking her for the sake of knocking her or something..?
Itaru Hinoue and NaGa from Key were selling their original works on the event. I mean, how could that not attract? Lol
Wow where was the bashing anyway, she used twitter to calm down the crowd. You guys keep saying people are brainwashed but ironically your saying it but there is no bashing anywhere. I personally don't have a vendetta against her just her antics that annoy me. If she stopped trolling or at least cut back, then not as much people would hate on her.
For fucks sake SanCom, you're gonna rail on Aya for trying to run a charity? Really? I thought the whole tsun-for-Aya thing the blog had was cute at first, but this is getting both annoying and wasteful. With this level of obsession and vendetta, I'm expecting the blog owner to be three clicks away from a Nice Boat...
Dude use your non-existant eyes to read properly... Hirano Aya herself was only mentioned twice. This is obviously a post on the event and not her.
Then why is it titled "Charity of Aya Hirano"?, when there are lots of seiyuus in there and she is not the lead? It should be the Charity of Seiyuus: Pure Confusion
Obviously sancom has a vendetta against Aya Hirano, ever since her self destructive revelation, SanCom never stop criticizing the smallest bits of Aya, even if they aren't newsworthy.
Sadly enough, there's so many people that SanCom brainwashed to think alike and start hating Aya. Majority of the negative comments all sound ill-informed and plain ignorant.
Clearly it's not Aya that's trolling, it's SanCom... :/
I wanna go.
did they say how they are planning to distribute the donations?
lets hope it stays out of the unicef mansion fund.
The charity of Aya Hirano is bullshit.
almost cancelled…?
This is AKIHABARA!
OMGOMGOMG. Hideo Ishikawa! Itachi and Feilooooong :DDD
Front row, the girl wearing glass (1st picture) Name?
I see Yui Sakakibara, it is, indeeed, a must-attend.
ohh Jun Fukuyama was there. still nice of her for this fund raising even in japan. can't believe she controlled the masses with twitter!!
I don't see why this sounds like a bad thing. I just can't help but feel that the article has a pretty negative stance on it. Organised or not, it was a charity event.
